Changing patterns of some trematode infections in Asia.

In certain areas of Asia the pattern of trematode infections in both man and animals seems to have changed in the recent past. On Taiwan, for example, paragonimiasis, fasciolopsiasis and schistosomiasis were at one time highly endemic in certain locations, but in recent years these parasitoses have been difficult to find in definitive, intermediate as well as reservoir hosts. Education, industrialization, alterations in the ecology and the use of modern agricultural practices have contributed to the changes. Conversely, it appears that human clonorchiasis is increasing in Taiwan while in Hong …

HFpEF in Asia-Clinical Characterization and Therapeutic Strategies.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) prevalence is increasing in Asia, driven by aging populations and rising cardiometabolic risk. Asian patients with HFpEF present a decade earlier than Western counterparts, carry a disproportionate burden of diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and visceral adiposity at lower body mass index thresholds, and exhibit marked regional heterogeneity in clinical subtypes and outcomes. Diagnosis remains challenging, as algorithms derived in Western populations perform suboptimally in Asian patients, and access to echocardiography and natriuretic pep…

Wastewater surveillance for early pathogen detection in Asia.

Wastewater surveillance (WS) has emerged as an important population-based surveillance tool for early pathogen detection to inform timely public health action. Despite global guidance to initiate WS programming in Asia, the priorities and needs in Asia remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional assessment of WS efforts in Asia. An institutional survey recorded 89 separate projects among 45 institutions in 19 countries in Asia. Financing for WS was equally split between domestic and external resources. Most projects were research-oriented, with one-fifth embed…

Definition and diagnosis of sarcopenia: Asia-Pacific perspectives.

Sarcopenia is a progressive, age-related condition characterized by the loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function. As Asia faces rapid population aging, sarcopenia has become an urgent public health concern. Over time, definitions and diagnostic criteria have evolved to emphasize muscle strength and physical performance rather than muscle mass alone. This review summarizes key updates in global and regional frameworks, including guidelines from the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019). However, these st…

Trends in DTP3 Vaccination in Asia (2012-2023).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: DTP3 (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, third dose) coverage is a key indicator of the strength and continuity of routine immunization programs, which demonstrably reduces the burden of infectious diseases globally. This study aims to assess trends in DTP3 vaccination coverage across Asian regions and countries from 2012 to 2023, focusing on changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: DTP3 vaccination data were obtained from official WHO/UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC) and analyzed using Joinpoint regression to detect statisti…

Different historical approaches to leprosy in the Asia-Pacific.

Leprosy, or Hansen disease, is a greatly feared infection of Mycobacterium leprae whose neuropathy induces disfiguring injuries subject to great social stigma. Historically, Australia largely confined its few leprosy patients to remote leper colonies (leprosaria) or in quarantine hospitals. The Philippines and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) had much larger infected populations in the early 20th century and required alternative approaches. The US military government of the Philippines chose actively to identify and confine all leprosy patients to segregated colonies on remote islands. Al

Bronchiectasis in Asia: a review of current status and challenges.

Recent bronchiectasis studies from large-scale multinational, multicentre registries have demonstrated that the characteristics of the disease vary according to geographic region. However, most perspectives on bronchiectasis are dominated by data from Western countries. This review intends to provide an Asian perspective on the disease, focusing on the established registries in India, Korea and China. Asian patients with bronchiectasis are less likely to show female predominance and experience exacerbations, are more likely to be younger, have milder disease, and have fewer options for guideli…

Bites and Stings: Exotic Causes of Stroke in Asia.

BACKGROUND: Many unusual and fascinating causes of stroke are seen in Asia. Although rarely encountered in the Western world, such cases are seen not so infrequently by neurologists, physicians, and other healthcare workers in Asian countries. This article highlights some of these intriguing causes of stroke such as snakebite, scorpion stings, and bee and wasp stings. SUMMARY: Snakebite is a neglected tropical disease of global importance affecting over 5 million people each year, and scorpion stings and bee and wasp stings affect over a million people worldwide every year. Strokes due to the…

A comprehensive review of cystic fibrosis in Africa and Asia.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) was earlier thought to be a disease prevalent in the West among Caucasians. However, quite a number of recent studies have uncovered CF cases outside of this region, and reported hundreds of unique and novel variant forms of CFTR. Here, we discuss the evidence of CF in parts of the world earlier considered to be rare; Africa, and Asia. This review also highlighted the CFTR mutation variations and new mutations discovered in these regions. This discovery implies that the CF data from these regions were earlier underestimated. The inadequate awareness of the disease in these…

Review of clinical tumor ablation advance in Asia.

Tumor ablation has been widely applied in Asia, accounting for 44.65% of clinical studies worldwide. We reviewed 5853 clinical studies to provide insight on the advance of tumor ablation in Asia chronologically and geographically among different techniques and organs. Since 1998, tumor ablation application has dramatically evolved in Asia. All kinds of ablation techniques, including percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), laser ablation (LA), cryoablation (CA), high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), and irreversible electroporation (IRE…

Spinocerebellar ataxias in Asia: Prevalence, phenotypes and management.

This paper reviews and summarizes three main aspects of spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) in the Asian population. First, epidemiological studies were comprehensively reviewed. Overall, the most common subtypes include SCA1, SCA2, SCA3, and SCA6, but there are large differences in the relative prevalence of these and other SCA subtypes between Asian countries. Some subtypes such as SCA12 and SCA31 are rather specific to certain Asian populations. Second, we summarized distinctive phenotypic manifestations of SCA patients of Asian origin, for example a frequent co-occurrence of parkinsonism in some…

The Upcoming Epidemic of Heart Failure in South Asia.

Currently, South Asia accounts for a quarter of the world population, yet it already claims ≈60% of the global burden of heart disease. Besides the epidemics of type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease already faced by South Asian countries, recent studies suggest that South Asians may also be at an increased risk of heart failure (HF), and that it presents at earlier ages than in most other racial/ethnic groups. Although a frequently underrecognized threat, an eventual HF epidemic in the densely populated South Asian nations could have dramatic health, social and economic consequen…

Introduction to a special issue on eating disorders in Asia.

OBJECTIVE: It is our pleasure to introduce a special issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders on eating disorders (EDs) in Asia. METHOD: We received such a robust response to the special edition that we were able to fill two issues. Contributions focused on seven main themes: (1) prevalence, (2) time trends, (3) healthcare systems, (4) treatment, (5) risk factors, (6) assessment, and (7) orthorexia. RESULTS: New prevalence and time trend data from China, Iran, Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan suggest that EDs are increasingly common in Asia but are not always detected in healthcare…
