Iron treatment in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A preliminary report.

Iron plays a role in the regulation of dopaminergic activity. In the present study, nonanemic children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were evaluated with regard to heme and nonheme iron metabolism and the effect of short-term iron administration on behavior. The study group consisted of 14 boys aged 7-11 years. All first underwent testing to rule out other psychiatric and medical problems. The severity of the ADHD symptoms was determined by parent and teacher scores on the Connors Rating Scale. Thereafter, each patient received an iron preparation (Ferrocal), 5 mg/kg/day

Assessment of magnesium levels in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

A positive influence of magnesium in the prevention and treatment of hyperactivity in children is more and more frequently raised in the literature. The aim of our work was to estimate magnesium contents in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, (ADHD). The investigations comprised 116 children (94 boys and 20 girls), aged 9-12 years, with recognized ADHD. In 68 out of 116 patients examined ADHD occurred with other coexisting disorders specific to the developmental age and in the remaining 48 patients it occurred together with disruptive behaviour. Magnesium levels have been d

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder in people with generalized resistance to thyroid hormone.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder is a well-recognized psychiatric disorder of childhood. Its cause is unknown, but there is evidence of a familial predisposition. Symptoms suggestive of this disorder have been reported in subjects with generalized resistance to thyroid hormone, a disease caused by mutations in the thyroid receptor-beta gene and characterized by reduced responsiveness of peripheral and pituitary tissues to the actions of thyroid hormone. We systematically evaluated the presence and severity of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder in 18 families with a hi

Methylphenidate treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in boys with Tourette's syndrome.

The effects of methylphenidate on four boys diagnosed as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Tourette's syndrome (TS) were examined under single-blind, placebo-controlled conditions. Clinical ratings and playroom observations showed improvement in ADHD symptoms with methylphenidate. Results also indicated that methylphenidate had no untoward effects on the frequency of tic occurrence. In all four children, the highest dose resulted in improved classroom ratings of tics compared with initial placebo treatment. In three cases, mild tic exacerbation was reported for a lower dose.

Diagnosing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities with chemically dependent adolescents.

The diagnosis and treatment of chemically dependent adolescents with a second diagnosis of learning disabilities (LD) or an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) poses a challenge. Like other so-called dual diagnoses, these conditions must be assessed against the background "noise" of the adolescent chemical dependency syndrome. This syndrome is coincident with the onset and cessation of chemical dependence and abuse. A diagnostic framework for assessing chemically dependent adolescents is presented, with specific reference to the differential diagnosis of LD and ADHD from other cond

Mediating factors associated with pedestrian injury in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of pediatric mortality. One leading cause of unintentional injury is pedestrian injury. Children with developmental disabilities, particularly those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-combined type (ADHD-C) seem to have increased pedestrian injury risk. This study examined (1) the differences in pedestrian behavior between children with ADHD-C and normally developing comparison children and (2) the mediating factors that might link ADHD-C with pedestrian injury risk. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 78 children aged 7 to 10 years

Differential impact of methylphenidate and atomoxetine on sustained attention in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the effects of atomoxetine (ATX) and OROS methylphenidate (MPH) on laboratory measures of inhibitory control and attention in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It was hypothesized that performance would be improved by both treatments, but response profiles would differ because the medications work via different mechanisms. METHODS: One hundred and two youth (77 male; mean age = 10.5 ± 2.7 years) with ADHD received ATX (1.4 ± 0.5 mg/kg) and MPH (52.4 ± 16.6 mg) in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design. Causal association of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder with post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are two neurodevelopmental disorders that often result in individuals experiencing traumatic events. However, little is known about the connection between ADHD/ASD and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to investigate the genetic associations between these disorders. METHODS: Genetic correlation analysis was used to examine the genetic components shared between ADHD (38 691 cases and 275 986 controls), ASD (18 381 cases and 27 969 controls) and PTSD (23 212 cases and 151 447 con

Sensory-motor deficits in children with developmental coordination disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autistic disorder.

Children who have been diagnosed with any one developmental disorder are very likely to meet diagnostic criteria for some other developmental disorder. Although comorbidity has long been acknowledged in childhood disorders, little is understood about the mechanisms that are responsible for the high level of comorbidity. In a series of studies, we have investigated the link between sensory-motor deficits and developmental disorders. Poor sensory-motor integration has long been implicated as a cause of motor problems in developmental disorders such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD), a

Daridorexant for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and insomnia disorder: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is highly prevalent in adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), worsening core symptoms, mood, and cognition. Despite its impact, pharmacological options remain limited. Dual orexin receptor antagonists, such as daridorexant, are a promising yet untested approach in this population. METHODS: In a naturalistic one-month study, 24 adults with ADHD and comorbid insomnia disorder received daridorexant 50 mg nightly. Sleep outcomes were assessed with the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Sleep Condition Indicator (SCI), and actigraphy-based measures. Secondary

Cognitive disengagement syndrome symptoms in obsessive-compulsive disorder with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidity between Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) appears complex in terms of etiology, phenomenology, and treatment. There is a need to identify possible factors which are related to the co-occurrence of OCD and ADHD in adults. Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) may contribute to this comorbidity through its associations with ADHD, emotional dysregulation, cognitive processes, and neuropsychological deficits. METHODS: In this study, we compared CDS and various sociodemographic and clinical characteristics in OCD patient

Comprehensive analysis of Guanfacine treatment in autism spectrum disorder with comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often co-occurs with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), exacerbating functional challenges. Standard ADHD treatments are often less effective and less well tolerated in ASD. Guanfacine XR, a non-stimulant ADHD medication, shows promise for managing hyperactivity and irritability in ASD-ADHD but with mixed results. This retrospective study analyzed data from 29 children aged 6–18 years with ASD-ADHD treated with Guanfacine XR at three healthcare centers. Clinicians initiated Guanfacine XR in cases with persistent ADHD symptoms, partial response, or s
