Automated capture and transfer of human facial expressions to humanoid robots for realistic patient simulation.

Realistic reproduction of human facial expressions is essential for realistic interactions between humans and humanoid robots. This work presents a data-driven framework for transferring human facial expressions to a humanoid robot and a virtual avatar, aiming to enhance emotional expressiveness and assess its applicability in psychiatric training scenarios. The proposed approach enables cross-domain facial expression mapping while accounting for mechanical constraints of robotic actuation. A user study (n = 40) evaluated emotion recognition across three stimulus categories: human faces (H), u

From Pong to Pokemon Go, catching the essence of the Internet Gaming Disorder diagnosis.

Taking as a starting point, this commentary proposes some issues regarding the diagnosis of Internet Gaming Disorder discussed in Kuss et al. (2016). In our opinion, the confusion in DSM-5 diagnosis could be due to the weak starting point in building the criteria. The criteria such as functional impairment and stability of the dysfunctional behavior are considered. It is suggested that avatar identification, playing motivations, and types of video games should be considered for diagnosis. The diagnostic process is highly influenced by social context and the rapid development of video game indu

Patient perspectives on modified virtual reality-assisted therapy for persistent auditory verbal hallucinations: A qualitative substudy of the CHALLENGE randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (voices) are common in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), and cause significant distress, making them a critical target in psychotherapeutic interventions. AVATAR therapy, conducted on a two-dimensional computer screen and its adaptation virtual reality-assisted therapy (VRT), using three-dimensional virtual reality (VR), have shown promise. Despite the potential of VRT, research exploring how specific VR characteristics can simulate voices experiences and affect therapy outcome remains scarce. Addressing this gap is key to refining VRT for persi

Integrating context and emotions: Top-down effects of intent on mimicry and contagion.

Emotions are always expressed and perceived in context. Context can provide key information about the meaning of the emotional expression, such as cues regarding the expresser's intentions. We examined how contextually inferred intent (Study 1, N = 212) as well as explicitly stated intent (Study 2, N = 229) shape emotion perception (accuracy/bias), interpersonal closeness, emotional contagion, and emotional mimicry. A further goal was to assess whether mimicry and contagion are tightly coupled or can dissociate depending on how the expression is interpreted in context. In Study 1, adolescent a

Augmented-reality-based multi-person exercise has more beneficial effects on mood state and oxytocin secretion than standard solitary exercise.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has positive effects on psychological well-being, with team sports often associated with superior mental health compared to individual sports. Augmented reality (AR) technology has the potential to convert solitary exercise into multi-person exercise. Given the role of oxytocin in mediating the psychological benefits of exercise and sports, this study aimed to investigate the impact of AR-based multi-person exercise on mood and salivary oxytocin levels. METHODS: Fourteen participants underwent three distinct regimens: non-exercise (Rest), standard solitary cycling exercis

Online Academic Cheating in Young Children and its Prevention.

The global social situation changed dramatically after the COVID-19 pandemic, with various activities being shifted online. Some academic activities, including those for young children, are still conducted virtually. The transition introduced various challenges regarding academic honestly. However, whether young children engage in more academic cheating in online (vs. offline) settings remains unclear. Accordingly, this study examines this aspect, as well as how such behavior can be mitigated. We conducted two experimental studies with five-year-olds (N = 148), using a between-subjects design

How do virtual exercise technology and social presence influence motivation to exercise?

INTRODUCTION: Virtual technology offers a promising tool for encouraging engagement in exercise, as it can provide the user with enhanced visual stimuli and accessible metrics; however, the specific features within that technology that contribute to motivation and participation require further investigation. This study examined how different visual displays and the presence of a second rider influenced motivation to exercise using virtual technology. METHODS: Twenty-four young adults completed a 3-km cycling course on the same virtual track under three counterbalanced conditions including (a)

Change in brain activity through virtual reality-based brain-machine communication in a chronic tetraplegic subject with muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: For severely paralyzed people, a brain-computer interface (BCI) provides a way of re-establishing communication. Although subjects with muscular dystrophy (MD) appear to be potential BCI users, the actual long-term effects of BCI use on brain activities in MD subjects have yet to be clarified. To investigate these effects, we followed BCI use by a chronic tetraplegic subject with MD over 5 months. The topographic changes in an electroencephalogram (EEG) after long-term use of the virtual reality (VR)-based BCI were also assessed. Our originally developed BCI system was used to clas

High- versus low-anthropomorphic-cue packages and health-information trust: social presence and source credibility under explicit AI disclosure.

BACKGROUND: AI virtual opinion leaders are increasingly used in health communication, but it remains unclear whether bundled anthropomorphic-cue packages foster initial trust and information-adoption intention when AI identity is explicitly disclosed. METHODS: Guided by the Computers Are Social Actors paradigm, Social Presence Theory, Source Credibility Theory, and the Information Adoption Model, we conducted a single-factor between-subjects randomized experiment comparing overall high- and low-anthropomorphic-cue packages. The packages differed simultaneously in avatar realism, gesture behav

Effects of Self-Projection through Mixed Reality on Walking Posture in Environment with Constrained Limb Movement.

The posture of a person changes due to various factors, causing accidents or illnesses. We examined walking posture using the self-projection method (SPM) in mixed-reality environments where upper- and lower-limb movements were constrained to simulate tasks such as obstacle avoidance and carrying objects. The SPM uses mixed-reality goggles to display a three-dimensional avatar representing the user's walking posture in real time, allowing users to visually monitor and adjust their gait through feedback-driven implicit learning. We selected 10 healthy men and compared their walking postures in

Intelligent virtual agents in psychotherapy: a safety evaluation across high-risk mental health scenarios.

The growing burden of mental illness and limited access to evidence-based psychotherapy have increased interest in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven conversational agents as potential supports for mental health care. In this exploratory pilot study, we examined the safety and feasibility of an intelligent virtual agent (IVA) designed to simulate psychotherapeutic interactions, with a focus on high-risk situations involving suicidality and substance use. Two licensed psychotherapists engaged in scripted interactions with the IVA across 12 predefined scenarios addressing suicidality and substa

Virtual Reality for the Treatment of Auditory Hallucinations in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Auditory hallucinations (AHs) are debilitating symptoms of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) associated with several negative outcomes. AHs are often resistant to existing pharmacological and psychological interventions. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising intervention for AHs. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of VR interventions in treating AHs in SSDs. STUDY DESIGN: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on Embase, APA PsycINFO, and MEDLINE via the Ovid Database. Studies with a randomized control

A Novel Virtual Reality Intervention Combining Movement Exercises and Body Illusions for the Treatment of Chronic Back Pain: Prospective Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) has proven effective in delivering nonpharmacological interventions to reduce acute and chronic pain. For the treatment of nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP), it offers benefits over traditional treatment options, such as the possibility of gamified movement exercises with real-time performance feedback and virtual embodiment. We implemented a novel immersive VR intervention (a serious game) that combined these elements. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the feasibility, tolerability, and initial clinical efficacy of the gamified VR intervention. METHODS:

Automated Inference of Social Anxiety From Behavior in Social Virtual Reality: Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety often manifests through behaviors such as reduced gaze to the eyes and lower speech volume. While these markers have been examined in face-to-face interactions, large-scale assessments remain challenging. Social virtual reality (VR) offers a promising alternative by enabling naturalistic interactions in which behavior can be captured at scale, but it remains unclear if people show naturalistic behavior in such artificial environments. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether behavioral and physiological markers associated with social anxiety in real-life interactions similarl

Toward a motor signature in autism: Studies from human-machine interaction.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders which core symptoms are impairments in socio-communication and repetitive symptoms and stereotypies. Although not cardinal symptoms per se, motor impairments are fundamental aspects of ASD. These impairments are associated with postural and motor control disabilities that we investigated using computational modeling and developmental robotics through human-machine interaction paradigms. METHOD: First, in a set of studies involving a human-robot posture imitation, we explored the impact of 3 dif

[Chapter 7. Digital systems of organizations and technosocial risks (TSR): towards an ethics of information and communication technologies (ICT) at work].

Our thinking is part of an exploratory and ethical approach, aimed at positioning technosocial risks (TSRs) within an information-communication-based and responsible approach. The aim is to show how the standardised use of ICT within organisations and its many avatars (hyperconnectivity, information overload, omnipresence, etc.) can have a negative impact on employees in the workplace, given that ICT plays a central role in the performance of their duties. In line with critical work on the organisation of work in particular, a genealogy of digital risks will be discussed here, with a view to a

Movement speed of an autonomous prosthetic limb shapes embodiment, usability and robotic social attributes in virtual reality.

Autonomous robotic prostheses can aid individuals with limb loss regain functionality and near-normal appearance. However, to psychologically integrate such limbs into one's body image, it is necessary to understand how movement characteristics, such as movement speed, affect the sense of embodiment. Using a VR simulation, we investigated how the speed of autonomous lower-arm movements affects embodiment and user-perception. Nineteen healthy participants embodied an amputated virtual avatar with a prosthetic lower left-arm moving autonomously at six different speeds following minimum-jerk traj

Using a virtual reality role-playing game to enhance interaction dynamics and improve social attitudes toward transgender people.

While virtual reality (VR) interventions have demonstrated efficacy in reducing intergroup prejudice, they have yet to be applied to transprejudice. Accordingly, we developed a VR role-playing game (RPG) that integrates perspective-taking and intergroup-contact for transgender identities. We evaluated the RPG's impact on cisgender individuals' movement dynamics and social attitudes toward transgender people using a mixed experimental design, in which 162 participants embodied a self-customised transgender avatar and interacted with a cisgender or transgender virtual colleague. Empathy increase

Visualizing the Unseen: Illustrating and Documenting Phantom Limb Sensations and Phantom Limb Pain With C.A.L.A.

Currently, there is neither a standardized mode for the documentation of phantom sensations and phantom limb pain, nor for their visualization as perceived by patients. We have therefore created a tool that allows for both, as well as for the quantification of the patient's visible and invisible body image. A first version provides the principal functions: (1) Adapting a 3D avatar for self-identification of the patient; (2) modeling the shape of the phantom limb; (3) adjusting the position of the phantom limb; (4) drawing pain and cramps directly onto the avatar; and (5) quantifying their resp

Clinical Trial of the Virtual Integration Environment to Treat Phantom Limb Pain With Upper Extremity Amputation.

Background: Phantom limb pain (PLP) is commonly seen following upper extremity (UE) amputation. Use of both mirror therapy, which utilizes limb reflection in a mirror, and virtual reality therapy, which utilizes computer limb simulation, has been used to relieve PLP. We explored whether the Virtual Integration Environment (VIE), a virtual reality UE simulator, could be used as a therapy device to effectively treat PLP in individuals with UE amputation. Methods: Participants with UE amputation and PLP were recruited at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) and instructed to foll
