Pathological and bacteriological studies of hydrosalpinx in buffaloes.

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the bacteria accompanying hydrosalpinx of the buffalo cow and investigate the correlation between bacterial infection of the uterus and hydrosalpinx. Buffalo cows' reproductive tracts were collected from Mosul abattoir. A total 385 uterine samples were examined of which 25 were having hydrosalpinx. Swabs for bacteriology, fluid for cytology and biopsies for histopathology were collected from the hydrosalpinx and the uterus from each samples included in this study. Results of this study indicated high prevalence of hydrosalpinx (6.5%) incl

[Bacteriological evaluation in chronic otitis media].

INTRODUCTION: In chronic otitis media bacterial infection is often a cause of exacerbation in the clinical course and failure in treatment. The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence and profile of the aerobic bacterial flora in chronic otitis media and to determine the drug susceptibility of selected isolated bacteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The samples of 274 consecutive middle ear discharges taken from 228 patients with chronic otitis media were analysed (which constitutes 41.3% all bacteriological examinations made during 3 years). The smears were obtained using sterile cotton s

[Bacteriologic study of the contents of radicular cysts].

INTRODUCTION: Radicular cysts are, most often, oral tissue cysts. The basis for their development are the remains of Hertwig's epithelial sheath, which is stimulated to proliferate by infectious agents, mostly periapical granuloma or pulp necrosis. The cyst contents can be liquid, either clear or milky-white, or thick and yellowish-caseous pus. Bacteriological and histopathological researches have shown that development of radicular cysts from periapical lesions is a consequence of penetration of normal bacterial flora of the oral cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study has bacteriologically

Bacteriological spectrum of cholecystitis and its antibiogram.

Bile Cultures for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were carried out on 125 samples from patients with chronic cholecystitis with cholelithiasis. Cultures grew 71(56.8%) aerobes and 17(13.6%) anaerobic microorganisms. Polymicrobial infection was seen in 7(16.2%) cases. E. coli (45.07%) and Klebsiella (25.35%) were predominant among the aerobes and Bacteroides fragilis (58.82%) was predominant among the anaerobes. Highest incidence of the disease was observed in the fourth decade of life and females predominated in this study.

[Bacteriological study of oral open abscesses].

Although studies of bacteriology of closed oral abscesses have been extensively done, there are few studies on microorganisms involving open oral abscesses. We examined bacteriologically three open abscesses with precaution against bacterial contamination with oral normal flora and saliva, when sampling. The specimens were subjected to aerobic and anaerobic cultures within 2 hours after sampling. All three cases were infected with 5 to 14 species of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria; Streptococcus spp., Prevotella intermedia and other Prevotella spp. were predominant in all three cases. All six P

Histopathological and bacteriological findings in prurigo nodularis.

Prurigo nodularis is a chronic disease with unknown aetiology. Biopsy specimens of 43 patients with prurigo nodularis were taken for histopathological and mycobacteriological analyses. By conventional histopathology, 25 (58%) samples, and by immunostaining for S100 protein, 31 (72%) samples had changes relevant to prurigo nodularis. Twelve (28%) of the samples were positive for acid fast bacilli in tissue staining by Ziehl-Neelsen technique, including 4 of the 6 samples also positive for mycobacteria in cultivation. The results verified the usefulness of S100 staining in detection of neural hy

Serological and bacteriological study of swine brucellosis.

A serological and bacteriological study was performed with sera taken from 2,228 swine from six states in Venezuela. None of the animals were vaccinated against brucellosis, and the prevalence of the disease varied from 5 to 89% on farms located in these states. Our studies indicated that the animals could be categorized into four groups depending on the degree of reactivity in serological tests. Brucella suis biovar 1 was isolated from the lymph nodes, spleens, and semen samples of seropositive animals and identified by oxidative metabolic techniques. B. suis could not be isolated from tissue

Tuberculous cervicitis: a clinicopathological and bacteriological study.

Seven cases of tuberculous cervicitis were detected out of 91 culturally and histologically established cases of uterine tuberculosis. There was simultaneous infection of cervix and endometrium in 4 cases and only cervical lesion in 3 cases. Two women gave a definite past history of primary extragenital tuberculosis-peritonitis in one and pulmonary lesion in the other. Clinically, cervix was predominantly hypertrophied in 4 cases and predominantly ulcerative in 3 cases. Acid-fast bacilli (Myco tuberculosis) were recovered from 5 cases, in abundance from 2 hypertrophied lesions and in sparse nu

Clinical & bacteriological profile of neonatal pneumonia.

In a prospective study of 44 neonates (33 outborn and 11 inborn) with pneumonia, the bacteriology of pneumonia was determined by blood culture and serum counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP). Twenty-nine babies also underwent lung aspiration. The lung aspirate was subjected to bacterial culture and CIEP. CIEP was done to detect the bacterial antigens of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Absence of tachypnoea, found more commonly in low birth weight babies, was a poor prognostic sign. Low birth weight babies had a significantly higher mortality than babies with normal birth wei

[Bacteriological investigation of burn blister fluid].

Under a sterilized technique the fluid of the unbroken blister was obtained for bacterial culture in 73 burned patients with different ages (5 months-67 Y) and extent of injury (1.5%-96% TBSA). Bacterial count was carried out if a positive result is obtained. Among the 73 patients, positive cultures were observed in 12, an incidence of 16.4%. Patients suffering from serious or extremely serious thermal injuries showed a positive culture rate of 15%. Bacterial count of the blister fluid appeared to be higher in patients with extensive burns. Most of the bacteria were common resident organisms o

[Bacteriologic findings and therapeutic consequences in adnexitis].

After laparoscopic confirmation of adnexitis, a bacteriological examination was made of specimens taken from the small pelvis of 63 patients, with an average age of 26.4 years, at the Rheinischen Landesfrauenklinik (Gynecological Hospital) in Wuppertal. To this end, various aerobic and anaerobic optimal and selective culture media were used. The cultured germs were identified with API systems, other conventional methods, and by using gas chromatography. All bacilli were tested for their sensitivity to mezlocillin and metronidazole. In 40 cases (63.5%), it was possible to determine 1-10 bacilli

Bacteriological study in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

The bacterial findings of 73 maxillary sinuses in 48 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, together with 7 non-inflamed sinuses, are reported. Employing an intraoperative technique and simultaneous collection of 3 different types of specimens in the present investigation made possible comparison of their bacterial characteristics. The results indicated that intraoperative culture of antral mucosa seems to provide the most reliable finding of bacterial flora in chronic maxillary sinusitis. The anaerobic bacteria were never found in the mucosal culture of non-inflamed sinus. The anaerobes a
