Patients with obesity are the largest and fastest-growing demographic among individuals with renal failure in the United States. Transplant centers often reject patients with high body mass index due to the risk of posttransplant complications. Metabolic bariatric surgery, the most efficient and durable weight loss method, can facilitate a timely kidney transplant listing and improve obesity-related comorbidities in a relatively safe manner. In this review, we identify kidney transplant candidates who are likely to benefit from metabolic bariatric surgery, discuss the potential risks of the pr

Obesity is a chronic inflammatory disease with an alarming number of cases recorded, becoming a global public health problem. Thus, an increasing number of eligible individuals choose to undergo metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), known for its effective results in weight reduction and improvement of metabolic conditions. Despite reversing the damage to the central nervous system caused by obesity, these procedures also present neuronal complications. Therefore, in this review, we explore the early impact of MBS on the brain of postoperative patients, with effects observed up to 6 months af

PURPOSE: This case report aims to highlight the potential for severe ocular complications due to vitamin A deficiency (VAD) following bariatric surgery, emphasizing the importance of long-term nutritional monitoring and compliance. We present a case report of corneal ulceration and ocular surface keratinization occurring eight years post-biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) and discuss its management in the context of limited access to intramuscular vitamin A therapy.
OBSERVATIONS: VAD can present years after bariatric surgery and cause severe ocular complications. In this

BACKGROUND: The Indian Armed Forces is an extremely fit fighting force. However, due to some factors like injuries or lack of physical activities, a very small percentage of serving population, who fall under the morbidly obese category, is offered bariatric surgery if diet changes and exercises fail to achieve satisfactory weight reduction. In the absence of a study to look into this cohort who have undergone bariatric surgery, a need is felt to estimate the effects of bariatric surgery on body mass index (BMI), co-morbidities and employability of these patients.
METHODS: This is a retrospec

Obesity was mainly regarded as a disease of developed countries, but currently there is a growing rise in the population of patients with obesity in developing countries of Africa. A body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher is regarded as obesity, and this may be associated with comorbidities such as metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, orthopaedic and psychiatric conditions, and cancer. There is conclusive scientific evidence that shows that obesity is caused by complex psychosocial, genetic and environmental factors. Diet and exercise are not effective as sole management of severe obesity. Ba

BACKGROUND: Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic primary and secondary health care services in Northern Ireland have observed an increase in the number of patients who have had bariatric surgery outside of the UK. This study sought to estimate the frequency of bariatric surgery tourism and to audit indications, blood monitoring and medical complications.
METHODS: All primary care centres within the Western Health Social Care Trust (WHSCT) were invited to document the number of patients undergoing bariatric surgery between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2022. For one primary care centre,

Obesity and obesity-related conditions today constitute a public health problem worldwide. Obesity is an "epidemic" chronic disorder, which is defined by the WHO as normal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. It is also defined for adults as a BMI that is greater than or equal to 30. The most common obesity-related diseases are type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and certain types of cancer. It has been also proven that obesity can have a negative effect o

Presurgical psychopathological assessment usually focuses on detecting severe mental disorders. However, mild intensity psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern may also influence postsurgical outcomes. The aim was to identify psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern in candidates prepared for bariatric surgery compared to a normative population before and after surgery. A cohort of 32 patients seeking bariatric surgery in a university hospital between March 2016 and March 2017 were evaluated with Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), 36-item EDE-Q and BES before and after surgery. Prurigo pigmentosa is an inflammatory skin condition that is characterized by the presence of pruritic reticulated hyperpigmented papules or vesicles of the upper trunk. Previously, this condition was rarely encountered until the rise in popularity of weight reduction methods. Even with the increased prevalence, most affected patients are still adults. We present the case of an adolescent who was successfully treated with doxycycline and encouraged to resume eating.

Obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) with related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea syndrome, and fatty liver disease is one of the most common preventable risk factors for cancer development worldwide. They are responsible for at least 40% of all newly diagnosed cancers, including colon, ovarian, uterine, breast, pancreatic, and esophageal cancer. Although various efforts are being made to reduce the incidence of obesity, its prevalence continues to spread in the Western world. Weight loss therapies such as lifestyle change, diets, drug therapies (GLP-1-r

Bariatric surgery can induce changes in digestive motility that are de novo or secondary to an improvement or aggravation of previous disorders due to obesity. Alterations of digestive motility are frequently part of the mechanism of action and a result of surgery. They are not rare and they are not always associated with an increase in weight loss but can lead to the negative consequences on quality of life, which are more or less reversible as a real surgical complication. Knowledge of these complications has become essential, especially in this period when bariatric surgery often concerns p

PURPOSE: Sleep deprivation is associated with growth hormone deficiency and an elevated cortisol level, both of which have been linked to obesity. However, assessing sleep quality is often not established in the multidisciplinary peribariatric evaluation program. This study aimed to determine sleep quality in patients who are seeking or underwent bariatric surgery by using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) measurements.

Iron deficiency (ID) is particularly frequent in obese patients due to increased circulating levels of acute-phase reactant hepcidin and adiposity-associated inflammation. Inflammation in obese subjects is closely related to ID. It induces reduced iron absorption correlated to the inhibition of duodenal ferroportin expression, parallel to the increased concentrations of hepcidin. Obese subjects often get decreased inflammatory response after bariatric surgery, accompanied by decreased serum hepcidin and therefore improved iron absorption. Bariatric surgery can induce the mitigation or resoluti
