The Design and Implementation of a Heart Disease Reversal Program in the Veterans Health Administration: Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the US, and the number of people with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is rising. CVD is more prevalent among military veterans than nonveterans, and veteran status is associated with higher risk of incident heart disease after controlling for socioeconomic status, other medical diseases, depression, and lifestyle. Many patients seeking care in the Veterans Health Administration, including those who undergo cardiac catheterization, meet the criteria for multimorbidity (defined as ≥ 2 chronic diseases). OBSERVATIONS: The Heart

Effect of repeated administration of Annona diversifolia Saff. (ilama) extracts and palmitone on rat amygdala kindling.

Annonas are consumed as fresh fruits, but, because of their effects on the central nervous system, are also used in folk medicine. The effect on rat amygdala kindling of repeated administration of Annona diversifolia hexane (100mg/kg IP or PO) and ethanol (100mg/kg, PO) leaf extracts and palmitone (10mg/kg, IP) was determined. Electrographic and/or behavioral changes were monitored during kindling-induced seizures 60minutes after treatments. Antiepileptic efficacy was evaluated with respect to afterdischarge (AD) duration, spike frequency, and/or behavioral seizure activity. Oral administratio

Guided self-help for binge eating/purging anorexia nervosa before inpatient treatment.

The goal of this study was to develop a cognitive-behavioral self-help manual for anorexia nervosa. Patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (N=102), binge eating/purging type (AN-B/P), were consecutively assigned to one of two conditions: 6-week manualized guided self-help or a wait-list control. All patients thereafter received inpatient treatment in a hospital for behavioral medicine. The primary outcome variable was the number of days in inpatient treatment. Secondary outcome variables were measures of psychopathology. Results showed that duration of inpatient treatment was significantly s

Lifestyle and Behavioral Factors and Cancer Survivorship in Women.

A growing number of women in the United States are cancer survivors. Behavioral and lifestyle factors are important components of health during and after cancer treatment and are modifiable with sustained behavior change. In this review, we summarize published evidence on the associations of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine's 6 lifestyle pillars-nutrition, physical activity, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, restorative sleep, and social connection-with survival and cancer recurrence among female cancer survivors and on the effects of interventions to modify each pill

Health-Seeking Behaviors After Acute Respiratory Infection Among Urban and Rural Residents and Different Age Groups: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: The choice of pathways in health-seeking behavior following acute respiratory infection (ARI) is critical for health care resource allocation, yet traditional logistic regression methods struggle to capture the dynamic evolution of such behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the dynamic process of changes in health-seeking behaviors following the onset of ARI and to identify differences in behavioral pathways associated with key factors such as urban-rural status and age. METHODS: This study used a multistate Markov model to quantify transition probabilities and inten

Proximal isovelocity surface area variability during systole in dogs with mitral valve prolapse.

The proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) principles and methodology have been described in human and veterinary medicine with special emphasis given to the ease and speed for the quantification of mitral regurgitation. Although limitations have been described in both human and veterinary medicine, in the case of veterinary medicine, clinical examples have not been well defined and in some cases have not been individually presented. The objective of this paper is to illustrate in a qualitative manner the echocardiographic existence of the dynamic behavior and variability of mitral regurgita

Development and Evaluation of a Health Behavior Change Clinic in Primary Care: An Interdisciplinary Partnership.

Providing effective healthy behavior change interventions within primary care presents numerous challenges. Obesity, tobacco use, and sedentary lifestyle negatively impact the health quality of numerous medical patients, particularly in underserved patient populations with limited resources. Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) models, which incorporate a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC), can offer point-of-contact psychological consultation, treatment, and also provide opportunities for interdisciplinary psychologist-physician clinical partnerships to pair a BHC's health behavior change ex

Mental health activities of family physicians.

A questionnaire survey of residency trained graduates and nonresidency trained family physicians showed both groups reporting relatively infrequent practice of behavioral medicine. Referrals and counseling sessions/visits produce a combined total of 20 activities per month, or two to four percent of all patient encounters, even though the physicians in the sample reported that 33 percent of their diagnoses were behavioral/psychological. More than 85 percent of the physicians reported access to more than one mental health provider. The six most common health problems encountered in the office w

Current and Emerging Therapies for Pediatric Sleep Disorders: A Narrative Review.

Sleep disorders in children represent a significant public health concern with important implications for neurodevelopment, behavior, and overall health. Among these, pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, narcolepsy, and sleep-related movement disorders are the most clinically relevant conditions requiring targeted therapeutic strategies. Pediatric OSA, affecting approximately 2-5% of children, is characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep and is associated with cognitive, behavioral, and cardiovascular consequences. Management is multimodal, with adenotonsil

Precision neurology.

Over the past several decades, high-resolution brain imaging, blood and cerebrospinal fluid analyses, and other advanced technologies have changed diagnosis from an exercise depending primarily on the history and physical examination to a computer- and online resource-aided process that relies on larger and larger quantities of data. In addition, randomized controlled trials (RCT) at a population level have led to many new drugs and devices to treat neurological disease, including disease-modifying therapies. We are now at a crossroads. Combinatorially profound increases in data about individu

Amelioration of Brain Damage after Treatment with the Methanolic Extract of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma in Mice.

Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (GR) is a traditional herbal medicine widely used in Asian countries. GR was the most frequently used medicine among stroke patients in Donguibogam, the most representative book in Korean medicine. In the present study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of the GR methanolic extract (GRex) on an ischemic stroke mice model. Ischemic stroke was induced by a 90 min transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), and GRex was administered to mice with oral gavage after reperfusion of MCA blood flow. The MCAO-induced edema and infarction volume was measured

The Treatment of Vestibular Migraine: A Narrative Review.

Vestibular migraine (VM) is one of the most debilitating chronic diseases that is currently underdiagnosed and undertreated. The treatment of VM is a dynamic and rapidly advancing area of research. New developments in this field have the potential to improve the diagnosis and provide more individualized treatments for this condition. In this review, we discussed the progress of evidence-based treatment of VM, including pharmacotherapy and nonmedical methods. A search of the literature was conducted up to September 2019. In order to control or cure VM, patients should follow three steps. First,

Biobehavioral mechanisms of work-related upper extremity disorders: a new agenda for research and practice.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies provide support for the role of organizational and individual psychosocial stressors in work-related upper extremity disorders (WRUEDs). Despite this evidence, the biological plausibility of a relationship between exposure to various psychosocial and work organizational stressors and WRUEDs remains unclear METHODS: The Georgetown Symposium on Biobehavioral Mechanisms of Work-Related Upper Extremity Disorders was held in Washington D.C. on November 6-7, 2000 to improve the understanding of potential biobehavioral mechanisms, identify future areas for researc

Tokishigyakukagoshuyushokyoto (TSGST) Inhibits Aggression Induced by Isolation Rearing in Mice.

Herbal medicines are widely used in clinical practice. Several herbal medicines are prescribed in clinical practice to improve mental symptoms. Yokukansan is an effective prescription for irritability and aggression, which are behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, because herbal medicines contain many components, their pharmacological effects have not been analyzed in detail. Risperidone and quetiapine are prescribed in severe cases; however, their side effects of oversedation are problematic. Tokishigyakukagoshuyushokyoto (TSGST)
