Interactions between interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) and distant cortical regions subserve potential effects on cognition of patients with focal epilepsy. We hypothesize that "Работает" brain areas at a distance from the epileptic focus may respond to the interference of IEDs by generating inhibitory alpha and beta oscillations. We predict that more prominent alpha-beta oscillations can be found in patients with less impaired neurocognitive profile. We performed a source imaging magnetoencephalography study, including 41 focal epilepsy patients: 21 with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and

Rumination occurs when an individual becomes mentally stuck and cannot redirect attention away from an unwanted thought demonstrating cognitive inflexibility. Cognitive flexibility is important for various cognitive functions, including episodic memory. Trait rumination is a partial mediator in the relationship between depression and overgeneral episodic memory, suggesting that rumination may negatively influence memory for contextual details. Oscillations in the alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) frequency bands are crucial for various cognitive functions (e.g., attention control and episodi

Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) has ramifications for feedback processing. Measuring neural oscillatory dynamics (during electroencephalography) provides insight into the time signatures and neural processes of feedback processing in adolescents with PCE. We measured spectral power in alpha and theta frequency bands while 49 adolescents with PCE and 34 non-drug exposed (NDE) performed a task with win/no-win feedback. Compared to NDE individuals, those with PCE showed reduced alpha power and increased theta power in response to no-win feedback. These findings suggest altered reactivity in PCE a

The aim of the study was to determine the possible differences in quantitative EEG parameters of schizophrenic patients before and during therapy with neuroleptics. First EEG recordings were obtained from schizophrenic patients (n = 50) who had not been taking any medicaments during the preceding 2 months. Second EEG recordings were obtained during the administration of neuroleptic therapy. Amplitude values of particular spectral segment, i.e. delta, theta, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1 and beta 2 (after fast Fourier transformation) were analyzed. The F3, F4, C3, C4, T3, T4, P3, P4, O1 and O2 regio

We report a 62-year-old woman with a long history of palpitations who presented with fatigue and acute dyspnea. ECG demonstrated a regular narrow-QRS tachycardia with long RP' intervals and 1:1 atrioventricular conduction. Episodes were recurrent despite amiodarone and beta-blockers, and transthoracic echocardiography revealed severe biventricular dysfunction which improved after rhythm control. We discuss the ECG features, mechanisms, and diagnostic clues of long RP' supraventricular tachycardia in adults.

Direct-current cardioversion has a higher success rate than does medical therapy in converting supraventricular tachyarrhythmias to sinus rhythm and should be performed immediately in patients with hemodynamic instability. Hemodynamically stable patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, a rapid ventricular rate and without preexcitation syndrome should be treated with intravenous beta-adrenergic blocking drugs, amiodarone, verapamil, or diltiazem. In hemodynamically unstable patients with supraventricular tachycardia, intravenous adenosine is the drug of choice.

Having analyzed the electrophysiological mechanisms and state of humoral regulatory substances in 87 patients with paroxysmal disorders of the cardiac rhythm the authors determined the antiarrhythmic action of two beta-blockaders: obsidan and metoprolol. They found a reduction of the sinus node function under the effect of obsidan and to a lesser degree under the effect of metoprolol. Metoprolol produced a high antiarrhythmic effect, particularly in supraventricular tachycardias with participation of abnormal conduction pathways.

Background: new-onset atrial fibrillation remains a common complication in critical care settings, often necessitating treatment when the correction of triggers is insufficient to restore hemodynamics. The treatment strategy includes electric cardioversion in cases of hemodynamic instability and either rhythm control or rate control in the absence of instability. Landiolol, an ultrashort beta-blocker, effectively controls heart rate with the potential to regulate rhythm. Objectives This review aims to compare the efficacy of landiolol in controlling heart rate and converting to sinus rhythm in

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an abnormal heart rhythm which may lead to stroke, heart failure, and death. Emergency physicians play a role in diagnosing AF, managing symptoms, and lessening complications from this dysrhythmia.
OBJECTIVE: This review evaluates recent literature and addresses ED considerations in the management of AF.
DISCUSSION: Emergency physicians should first assess patient clinical stability and evaluate and treat reversible causes. Immediate cardioversion is indicated in the hemodynamically unstable patient. The American Heart Association/American College of C

OBJECTIVE: Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a state of complete paralysis, except for ocular movements, which results from ventral brainstem lesions. Patients typically are fully conscious. Here we tested the hypothesis that electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms are abnormal in LIS patients, possibly due to an impaired neural synchronization between brainstem and cerebral cortex.
METHODS: Resting state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded in 13 LIS subjects and 15 cognitively normal control subjects. With reference to the individual alpha frequency (IAF), the bands of interest were delta (IAF-8 to I

Experiments were conducted to ascertain if changes in central adrenergic receptors could be associated with altered circadian activity patterns induced by thyroparathyroidectomy (TPX) and thyroxine. An initial experiment used TPX and sham-operated rats that had been exposed to dim red light for 7 months. The alpha and beta receptor densities were compared in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), preoptic (PO), septum, and caudate-putamen. TPX animals showed significant reductions in beta 1 and beta 2 receptor densities in SCN and PO, and alpha 1 densities in SCN, but no other changes. A second exp

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with substantial cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The arrhythmia can be initiated and/or maintained by rapidly firing foci, single- and multiple-circuit reentry. Once initiated, AF alters atrial electrical and structural properties (atrial remodeling) in a way that promotes its own maintenance and recurrence and may alter the response to antiarrhythmic drugs. Thus, initial episodes of paroxysmal (self-terminating) AF lengthens to the point where the arrhythmia becomes persistent (requires cardiove

AIMS: Like aldosterone escape to ACE-inhibitors, adrenergic escape (AE) to beta-blockers appears conceivable in chronic heart failure (CHF), as generalized systemic neurohumoral activation has been described as the pathophysiological basis of this syndrome. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and prognostic value of AE with respect to different beta-blocker agents and doses.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a prospective, observational study of 415 patients with systolic CHF receiving chronic stable beta-blocker therapy. AE was defined by norepinephrine levels above the upper lim

INTRODUCTION: Beta oscillations in sensorimotor structures contribute to the planning, sequencing, and stopping of movements, functions that are typically associated with the role of the basal ganglia. The presence of beta oscillations (13-30 Hz) in the cerebellar zone of the thalamus (the ventral intermediate nucleus - Vim) indicates that this rhythm may also be involved in cerebellar functions such as motor learning and visuomotor adaptation.
METHODS: To investigate the possible role of Vim beta oscillations in visuomotor coordination, we recorded local field potential (LFP) and multiunit a

In this paper we have described early applications of computerized EEG techniques in psychopharmacology. Perhaps our most remarkable finding was there were practically no differences between very chronic drug free schizophrenic patients and normals, which contradicts much of the EEG imaging literature. To us, the most likely explanation is that most of the anterior slowing observed in other studies was due to contamination from orbital artifacts, which we took exceptional pains to remove. Lingering effects of neuroleptic medications may also have contributed. Alternatively, EEG deviations in s

In the pineal gland numbers of synaptic ribbons (SR) undergo day/night changes which parallel the rhythm of melatonin synthesis. Since pineal biosynthetic activity is controlled by activation of adrenoreceptors, we investigated the effects of adrenergic agonists and antagonists on pineal synaptic ribbon numbers and N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity, the key enzyme of melatonin synthesis in rats. In vivo application of the beta-adrenergic antagonist propranolol decreased melatonin synthesis when given during the dark phase but did not affect SR numbers. Treatment during daytime with the beta-a

BACKGROUND: Medications used to treat respiratory diseases include beta-adrenoceptors, antimuscarinics, inhaled and oral corticosteroids, and theophyllines. Most of these drugs have been associated indirectly with cardiac rhythm disorders, but epidemiologic evidence is limited.
METHODS: To evaluate the association between respiratory drugs and the occurrence of rhythm disorders among patients with asthma and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we conducted a case-control study nested in a population-based cohort of individuals 10-79 years of age and registered in the U.K. Genera
