A systematic review of heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback treatment following traumatic brain injury (TBI).

OBJECTIVE: Autonomic nervous system dysregulation is a common consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Heart rate variability (HRV) is a cost-effective measure of autonomic nervous system functioning, with studies suggesting decreased HRV following moderate-to-severe TBI. HRV biofeedback treatment may improve post-TBI autonomic nervous system functioning and post-injury emotional and cognitive functioning. We provide a systematic evidence-based review of the state of the literature and effectiveness of HRV biofeedback following TBI. METHOD: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Sy

Telepractice Treatment of Residual Rhotic Errors Using App-Based Biofeedback: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Although mobile apps are used extensively by speech-language pathologists, evidence for app-based treatments remains limited in quantity and quality. This study investigated the efficacy of app-based visual-acoustic biofeedback relative to nonbiofeedback treatment using a single-case randomization design. Because of COVID-19, all intervention was delivered via telepractice. METHOD: Participants were four children aged 9-10 years with residual errors affecting American English /ɹ/. Using a randomization design, individual sessions were randomly assigned to feature practice with or wit

Home pelvic floor exercises in children with non-neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: Is fitball an alternative to classic exercises?

INTRODUCTION: Biofeedback with home pelvic floor exercises were recommended as non-pharmacologic treatment for non-neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) in children. Fitball is recommended to improve all-over flexibility, balance, and coordination, especially for pelvic floor. Aim of the study was to investigate efficacy of standard home pelvic floor exercises versus exercises using fitball. METHODS: From April 2021 to February 2022 to all children arrived in our clinic with non-neurogenic LUTS nonresponder at urotherapy, our pelvic floor rehabilitative program was proposed. During t

A new biofeedback approach for the control of awake bruxism and chronic migraine headache: utilization of an awake posterior interocclusal device.

BACKGROUND: The relationship of bidirectional comorbidity between chronic migraine and pain in the cephalic segment led us to evaluate the improvement in reducing the pain in patients diagnosed with chronic migraine headache and awake bruxism, when undergoing treatment with a partial posterior interocclusal device designed for the management and control of awake bruxism through biofeedback. METHODS: Seventy-four patients were evaluated during the following periods: pretreatment, seven, thirty, ninety, one hundred and eighty days, and one year. The evaluation was carried out by measuring the p

Effects of Wearable Devices with Biofeedback on Biomechanical Performance of Running-A Systematic Review.

This present review includes a systematic search for peer-reviewed articles published between March 2009 and March 2020 that evaluated the effects of wearable devices with biofeedback on the biomechanics of running. The included articles did not focus on physiological and metabolic metrics. Articles with patients, animals, orthoses, exoskeletons and virtual reality were not included. Following the PRISMA guidelines, 417 articles were first identified, and nineteen were selected following the removal of duplicates and articles which did not meet the inclusion criteria. Most reviewed articles re

Rehabilitation of postural stability in ataxic/hemiplegic patients after stroke.

PURPOSE: This study assesses the postural stability and the effect of balance training using a force platform visual biofeedback among outpatients with postural disturbances following stroke. METHOD: A tilting multiaxial force platform was used to assess bilateral postural stability in 38 outpatients (mean age 69.50  +/- 8.57 years) with hemiplegia and/or ataxia after stroke. Stability indexes were obtained. Afterwards, a subgroup of 12 patients with the poorest overall stability index (OASI) started a balance training programme in the force platform. Postural control training consisted of a

[Psychogenic tremor: a positive diagnosis].

Psychogenic movement disorders are a daily challenge for the neurologist. A mistake in its recognition may have important consequences for the patients. As a result, the diagnosis must be considered very carefully in clinical practice. However, psychogenic movement disorders are not unusual, are mainly tremors, and a wrong diagnosis is common. Psychogenic is an unspecific term that usually masks the real mental disorder, and should be called somatoform disorders, factitious disorders, malingering, depression, anxiety and histrionic personality disorder, although the absence of a psychiatric di

Heart rate variability in the assessment and biofeedback training of common mental health problems in children.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the beat-to-beat variations in heart rate related to the work of autonomic nervous system. It may serve as a psychophysiological indicator for arousal, emotional state and stress level. We used this parameter in both the assessment and biofeedback training, for dealing with five groups of common mental health problem in school children (anxious-phobic, somatoform, obsessive-compulsive, attention deficit hyperactivity and conduct disorders). The obtained results were compared with healthy children at the same age. In order to define the four main cha

The need for individualization in neurofeedback: heterogeneity in QEEG patterns associated with diagnoses and symptoms.

Very diverse assessment procedures are utilized by neurofeedback practitioners, many of which are not based on careful examination of raw EEG data followed by scientifically objective quantitative EEG (QEEG) database comparisons. Research is reviewed demonstrating the great heterogeneity in the EEG patterns associated with various diagnoses and symptoms. The fact that most patients qualify for dual diagnoses, with co-morbid psychiatric and medical conditions present, complicates the ability of clinicians to estimate what electrophysiological patterns may be associated with symptoms. In such ca

A speedy solution for balance and gait analysis: angular velocity measured at the centre of body mass.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Falls are a serious problem for the elderly and others prone to fall. In particular, those over 65 years of age will suffer at least one fall a year and as a result will need cost-intensive medical treatment. Under these circumstances, an optimal clinical pathway should first identify those with a tendency to fall, second, pinpoint the disease-specific deficits in balance control and walking patterns, and third, offer the possibility through focused biofeedback training to reduce the number of falls suffered. This review describes new methods of assessing balance control in

Clinical and physiologic effects of biofeedback in outlet obstruction constipation.

PURPOSE: We report the results of biofeedback (BF) on patients with outlet obstruction defecation (OOC), including those with and without measurable paradoxical puborectalis contractions (PP). Clinical and anorectal physiologic parameters (ARP) were assessed one week before and after a standardized course of BF. METHODS: Sixty-two consecutive patients (24 men, 38 women; mean age, 48 (standard error of the mean, 2.3) years) were recruited. All had persistent constipation despite six weeks of dietary fiber supplements. Colonic inertia was excluded by transit marker studies. Defecating proctogra

Hypnotic susceptibility, cognitive dissociation, and runner's high in a sample of marathon runners.

I studied the hypnotic ability of marathon runners as it relates to cognitive dissociation while running and to runner's high. Dissociating runners use a cognitive style in which they cut themselves off from the sensory feedback they would normally receive from their body. Marathon runners demonstrated high hypnotic susceptibility scores. Additionally, use of dissociation as a running strategy during the marathon was positively related to susceptibility, and runners who dissociated in training had higher susceptibility scores than did other runners. Runner's high was not related to hypnotic su

Heterogeneity of biofeedback training effects in spasmodic torticollis: a single-case approach.

Data from 184 biofeedback sessions are presented, in which 10 subjects with spasmodic torticollis had been trained to reduce pathologic activity in the hypertrophied sternocleidomastoid muscle. Each session was conducted as a single case experiment with nine successive trials. Attempts were made to distinguish motor learning processes which can be elicited independently from the biofeedback-condition from the effects of specific biofeedback information. Results showed dramatic decreases of muscle activity under biofeedback. Contrary to expectation, action potentials did not decrease across a c

Ultrasound biofeedback for speech training. Instrumentation and preliminary results.

Real-time ultrasound scanning was employed as biofeedback therapy to correct a persistent articulatory speech defect in a subject. The subject continuously imaged her tongue with a transducer placed submentally. During a speech exercise, the subject could compare her tongue's positioning and movement with an ultrasound image showing the correct tongue placement prerecorded onto video tape by a speech therapist. Preliminary results suggest that this technique could be a valuable addition to speech therapy.

Impact of a short-term stress management protocol on physiologic biofeedback measures of stress and mood in people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stress exacerbates multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms. We report a 10-year study examining objective and subjective measures of stress and mood in people with MS (PwMS) using a shortened and more practical form of the Stress Management Therapy for MS (SMT-MS), the Stress Management Protocol (SMP). METHODS: We analyzed data from PwMS who underwent a 4-session SMP at Cleveland Clinic between 2012 and 2022 (N = 195; 90.5 % female; 68.2 % White; average age, 44.4 years; average disease duration, 12.1 years). Subjective data were collected pre-session using the Patient Hea

Behavioural interventions for primary and secondary dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea refers to the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of uterine origin and is a common gynaecological condition with considerable morbidity. The behavioural approach assumes that psychological and environmental factors interact with, and influence, physiological processes. Behavioural interventions for dysmenorrhoea may include both physical and cognitive procedures and focus on both physical and psychological coping strategies for dysmenorrhoeic symptoms rather than modification of any underlying organic pathology. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of any b

Complementary and alternative approaches to the treatment of tension-type headache.

While pharmacotherapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and tricyclic antidepressants comprises the traditional treatment of tension-type headaches (TTH), the use of other therapeutic approaches in combination with medications can increase the success of treatment. Patients with comorbid mood disorders and frequent headaches may particularly benefit from some nonpharmacologic approaches. This review focuses on complementary and alternative approaches to tension-type headache treatment, including psychological therapies, acupuncture, and physical treatments. The current evidence in
