PURPOSE: Scanning laser polarimetry (SLP) reveals abnormal retardance of birefringence in locations of the edematous peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), which appear thickened by optical coherence tomography (OCT), in nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). We have recently observed a strongly birefringent material of varying shapes and sizes in a benign breast cyst fluid specimen from a 52-yr-old woman with suspicious mammographic microcalcifications. The finding of calcium oxalate crystals in the breast cyst fluid should be regarded as a recognition of a particular type of calcification, easily overlooked with the conventional light microscopy. To date, we are unaware of any cytologic reports of this type of calcification in the breast.

In the field of structural chemistry, crystals containing the [OM4] tetrahedra (M = metal cation) structure have been well documented. However, compounds containing both [OPb4] tetrahedra and π-conjugated groups are less reported due to their structural complexity. In this work, a new lead borate-nitrate, Pb9O4(BO3)2(NO3)4, has been synthesized by a high temperature melt method. Notably, the structure of Pb9O4(BO3)2(NO3)4 contains special [O8Pb18]∞ chains formed by the [OPb4] tetrahedra. This compound possesses a large optical anisotropy with birefringence of Δn = 0.117 at 546 nm.

Using chiral amino acids as terminal ligands, colorless crystals of Cd3(SCN)6(l-C5H9NO3)2(H2O)2·0.5CH3OH (1) and Cd(SCN)2(l-C6H14N4O2)2 (2) were obtained by a solvent evaporation method. Compound 1 has a layered structure with a moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency (0.2 × KH2PO4) and a large birefringence (0.301 at 546 nm). Compound 2 features a molecular structure with a strong SHG efficiency (2.67 × KH2PO4) and a wide band gap (4.84 eV). Theoretical calculations were performed to elucidate the origin of the large SHG response of compound 2.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, benign, locally aggressive odontogenic epithelial tumor that affects the jaws. Although there are numerous reports on the variants of CEOT, occurrence of clear cells with complete absence of calcification has been a rarity. Histochemical analysis of tumor cells revealed glycogen granules with PAS staining, with absence of CD 1a staining in clear cells, while the amyloid-like deposit associated with clear cells showed green birefringence with Congo red. We report an unusual variant of CEOT occurring in a 27 years old male patient.

A case of localized amyloidosis of the urethra is reported. A 42-year-old man visited with the complaint of urethral discharge and urethral tumor on May 24, 1985. A small fingertip sized, elastic hard mass was present on the left side of the external urethral meatus. Cold cup biopsy of the urethral tumor was done. Histological examination of the tumor showed amorphous eosinophilic tissue staining. Green birefringence indicating amyloidosis by Congo red staining was observed under polarized light microscope. Since the patient's symptoms were minimal, no specific therapy was instituted.

We report the rare occurrence of sicca syndrome associated with primary amyloidosis. A 63-year-old man with apparent keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia died of the cardiac failure. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was produced in 2 rabbits by the surgical extirpation of the tear-secreting glands and the nictitating membrane in one eye. Flat mounts of the superficial corneal epithelium were prepared by the in vivo replica technique. Chondrocalcinosis is a common arthritic disorder among elderly patients. We present a case of a 71-year-old woman presenting with an acute episode of the left forearm with hand swelling. A provisional diagnosis of cellulitis was made and the patient was started on intravenous antibiotics. The patient's condition did not improve. Joint aspiration of the wrist joint was done and showed positive birefringent rhomboid-shaped crystals. A final diagnosis of acute chondrocalcinosis was made.

A Fabry-Perot interferometer displacement sensor is proposed and demonstrated. This sensor is prepared by inserting two ceramic ferrules into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hose to generate a Fabry-Perot cavity. The cavity is filled with nematic liquid crystals (NLCs), which induce a Vernier effect due to the birefringence of NLCs. The flexible PDMS hose makes the cavity length adjustable. A displacement sensor with sensitivity of ∼2.97 nm/μm and a dynamic range of 0.9 mm at the center wavelength of 1550 nm is experimentally demonstrated.

We report the immunolocalization of extensive amyloid beta-protein in senile plaques, cerebrovascular amyloid deposits, neurofibrillary tangles and preamyloid in a 32-year-old man with progressive dementia not due to trisomy 21 or trauma. These amyloid deposits were non-reactive to antibodies directed against scrapie amyloid. Our data indicate that the presence of amyloid beta-protein is not limited to normal aging, Alzheimer's disease and related disorders but is also found in younger individuals with progressive dementia.

We describe the case of a 40-year-old-woman with an acute arthritis of the left shoulder. Synovial fluid aspirated from the joint cavity appeared purulent but contained few leucocytes and no birefringent crystals. It was, however, rich in apatite crystals. A communication between the subacromial bursa and the gleno-humeral cavity through the rotator cuff could be demonstrated by sonography. The acute arthritis was secondary to the intra-articular rupture of a peri-articular calcification.
