Parity and low birth weight and preterm birth: a systematic review and meta-analyses.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the risks of pregnancy outcomes among women of different parity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for studies, in English language, in which primary objective was to assess association between parity and pregnancy outcomes. Meta-analyses were performed and unadjusted odds ratios (ORs) and mean differences along with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), birth weight, and gestational age. RESULTS: Forty-one studies, most with

Bruising at birth: antenatal associations and neonatal outcome of extremely low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Early studies have identified severe cranial bruising as a risk factor for intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in premature infants but the nature of this association has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To identify antenatal predictors and associations with neonatal outcome of bruised extremely low birth weight infants. METHODS: A cohort study comparing 34 bruised and 116 non-bruised infants (birth weight <or=1,000 g), delivered in two 'Hadassah' university hospitals in Jerusalem between 2000 and 2004. Bruised patients were divided according to the severity of bruising. A univariate

Maternal posttraumatic stress response after the birth of a very low-birth-weight infant.

OBJECTIVE: For parents, the premature birth of a child represents a traumatic event for which they are poorly prepared. To date, the focus of scientific interest has been on maternal psychological stress responses, such as anxiety and depression, or on appropriate coping mechanisms, whereas only scant attention has been paid to the traumatic aspect of the maternal experience after very low-birth-weight (VLBW) birth. The present study is the first to investigate the posttraumatic stress response of mothers after the birth of a VLBW infant in a prospective longitudinal study. METHODS: Fifty mot

Factors associated with preterm birth and low birth weight among syphilis-infected pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW) among syphilis-infected pregnant women and to identify the factors associated with these outcomes. METHODS: Syphilis-infected pregnant women and their newborns in Changsha City between 2013 and 2023 were investigated. Chi-square trend tests were used to determine trends in the rates of PTB and LBW among syphilis-infected pregnant women. Binary logistic regression models and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) were used to identify factors associated with PTB and LBW among syphilis-infected pregnant women. RESULTS: The overall

Accuracy of Mothers' Perception of Birth Size to Predict Birth Weight Data in Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) is an important indicator of child health and wellbeing. However, in many countries, decisions regarding care and treatment are often based on mothers' perceptions of their children's birth size due to a lack of objective birth weight data. Additionally, birth weight data that is self-reported or recorded often encounters the issue of heaping. This study assesses the concordance between the perceived birth size and the reported or recorded birth weight. We also investigate how the presence of heaped birth weight data affects this concordance

Grandmothers' endocrine disruption during pregnancy, low birth weight, and preterm birth in third generation.

BACKGROUND: Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is an endocrine-disrupting pharmaceutical prescribed to pregnant women to prevent pregnancy complications between the 1940s and 1970s. Although DES has been shown in animal studies to have multigenerational effects, only two studies have investigated potential multigenerational effects in humans on preterm birth (PTB), and none on low birthweight (LBW)-major determinants of later life health. METHODS: Nurses' Health Study (NHS) II participants (G1; born 1946-64) reported their mothers' (G0) use of DES while pregnant with them. We used cluster-weighted gene

The newborn metabolome: associations with gestational diabetes, sex, gestation, birth mode, and birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Pathways towards many adult-onset conditions begin early in life, even in utero. Maternal health in pregnancy influences this process, but little is known how it affects neonatal metabolism. We investigated associations between pregnancy and birth factors and cord blood metabolomic profile in a large, population-derived cohort. METHODS: Metabolites were measured using nuclear magnetic resonance in maternal (28 weeks gestation) and cord serum from 912 mother-child pairs in the Barwon Infant Study pre-birth cohort. Associations between maternal (metabolites, age, BMI, smoking), preg

Mortality and Morbidities according to Time of Birth in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants.

BACKGROUND: Although the overall quality of high-risk neonatal care has improved recently, there is still concern about a difference in the quality of care when comparing off-hour births and regular-hour births. Moreover, there are no data in Korea regarding the impact of time of birth on mortality and morbidities in preterm infants. METHODS: A total of 3,220 infants weighing < 1,000 g and born at 23-34 weeks in 2013-2017 were analyzed based on the Korean Neonatal Network data. Mortality and major morbidities were analyzed using logistic regression according to time of birth during off-hours

Birth weight and cognitive function in early adulthood: the Australian Aboriginal birth cohort study.

It has been suggested that in addition to genetic factors, fetal and post-natal growth influence cognition in early adulthood. However, most studies have been in developed populations, so it is unclear if the same findings would be seen in other, less developed, settings, and have used testing tools not applicable to an Australia Aboriginal population. This study investigated the relationships between cognitive function in early adulthood and birth weight and contemporary height. Simple reaction time (SRT), choice reaction time (CRT) and working memory (WM) were assessed using the CogState bat

Ambient air pollution, birth weight and preterm birth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Low birth weight and preterm birth have a substantial public health impact. Studies examining their association with outdoor air pollution were identified using searches of bibliographic databases and reference lists of relevant papers. Pooled estimates of effect were calculated, heterogeneity was quantified, meta-regression was conducted and publication bias was examined. Sixty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. The majority of studies reported reduced birth weight and increased odds of low birth weight in relation to exposure to carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) and particu

Effect of birth weight on adverse obstetric outcomes in vaginal birth after cesarean delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between neonatal birth weight and adverse obstetric outcomes in women attempting vaginal birth after cesarean. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of all women undergoing a trial of labor after a prior low transverse cesarean delivery in our institution between 1987 and 2004. Patients were categorized according to birth weight (less than 3,500 g [group 1, reference], 3,500-3,999 g [group 2], and 4,000 g or more [group 3]) and prior vaginal delivery. The rates of failed trial of labor, uterine rupture, shoulder dystocia, and third- and fourth-degree

Effects of in vitro fertilization on low birth weight, preterm delivery, and multiple birth.

PURPOSE: To quantify the contribution of in vitro fertilization (IVF) on changes in the rates of low birth weight (LBW), preterm delivery, very low birth weight, and multiple births during the past 3 years. METHODS: Data on IVF pregnancies from 1994 to 1996 within Alberta were reviewed. Population data were obtained from the Provincial notice of a live or stillbirth. RESULTS: The IVF component of increased LBW rate in the province was 17.8% for infants <2500 g and 43.5% for those born <1500 g. IVF accounted for 10.5% of the provincial rate increase in deliveries <37 weeks' gestation and 66.2

[Pregnancies complicated by hemorrhage and birth of low birth weight infants in Cotonou (Benin)].

The effect of bleeding during pregnancy on the outcome remains unclear. Nevertheless, some of these pregnancies go to term, raising the question of the effects on the new-born infant. The data concerning a possible correlation with low birth weight are ambiguous. Furthermore, there are few studies of this issue in developing countries. We studied 2168 women giving birth to single children chosen at random in two maternity services in Cotonou (Benin) in 1990. Data was collected by two trained midwives interviewing the women and from the medical files 24 hours after delivery. One hundred and thi

The clinical value of ultrasonic cardiac output monitor in very-low birth-weight and extremely-low-birth-weight infants undergoing PDA ligation.

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory instability occurs very often in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) and extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants undergoing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation during the early postoperative period. This study aimed to investigate ultrasonic cardiac output monitor (USCOM) as a bedside tool by evaluating the hemodynamic changes in preterm infants following PDA ligation and assessing factors that may influence these changes. METHODS: This was a single-center prospective observational study at a third-level neonatal intensive care unit. A total of 33 infants, includi

An association between maternal weight change in the year before pregnancy and infant birth weight: ELFE, a French national birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Weight-control interventions in pregnant women with overweight or obesity have limited effectiveness for fetal growth and birth outcomes. Interventions or prevention programs aiming at the pre-pregnancy period should be considered. However, how the woman's weight change before pregnancy affects fetal growth is not known. We investigated the association between weight change over the year before pregnancy and birth weight. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used the inclusion data of 16,395 women from the ELFE French national birth cohort, a nationally representative cohort in which infants

Determinants of birth weight in Portugal: 1988 to 2011.

The objective of this paper is to analyse temporal birth weight variation, its relationship to the frequency of premature births in Portugal, and the influence of native and immigrant mothers' characteristics as well as to determine the possible existence of a pattern of temporal change in birth weight in the Iberian Peninsula as a whole. Individual mother-child data from the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics regarding live births (N = 2,661,542) permitted an analysis, for the first time, of weight at birth in Portugal from a bio-demographic perspective. The results obtained show tha

Birth weight of infants of mothers with aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: It was hypothesized that if periodontal infections predispose low birth weights and premature birth, then such outcomes should be apparent when the mother has aggressive periodontitis (AgP). METHODS: Birth weight data were collected by questionnaire from females with AgP, their periodontally healthy siblings, and unrelated periodontally healthy women. Both prospective and retrospective birth outcome data were used. Because many of the periodontal evaluations were performed after the births, there were incomplete data regarding most of the risk factors for low birth weight. We dete
