Bioaccumulation of Trace Elements in Soft Tissues of the Clam Larkinia grandis from Southeastern Gulf of California: Baseline Levels and Health Risk Assessment.

The bioaccumulation of trace elements (TEs) in the soft tissue of the clam Larkinia grandis from the Gulf of California (GC) and the risk of its consumption are still unknown. We evaluated the levels of aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the digestive gland, mantle, gills, gonad, and adductor muscle of L. grandis from the southeastern GC, collected bimonthly from August 2017 to June 2018. The concentrations of the studied elements (mg kg-1 wet weight) presented the following decreasing order of abundance: Fe (62.7 ± 48

Multi-scale design of the structure and mechanical performance of the deep-sea hydrothermal mussel (Bathymodiolus aduloides) shell.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are renowned for being among the most extreme environments on Earth. However, the mussel shells found in these vent sites demonstrate remarkable productivity, despite being subjected to high pressure as well as unusual levels of heavy metals, pH, temperature, CO2, and sulphides. To comprehend how these mussels endure such extreme conditions, a systematic comparative study was conducted, focusing on the unique chemical composition, structural designs, and mechanical properties of hydrothermal vent mussels (Bathymodiolus aduloides) in comparison to shallow-water musse

Pre-introduction introgression contributes to parallel differentiation and contrasting hybridization outcomes between invasive and native marine mussels.

Non-native species experience novel selection pressures in introduced environments and may interbreed with native lineages. Species introductions therefore provide opportunities to investigate repeated patterns of adaptation and introgression across replicated contact zones. Here, we investigate genetic parallelism between multiple introduced populations of the invasive marine mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, in the absence (South Africa and California) and presence of hybridization with a native congener (Mytilus planulatus in Batemans Bay and Sydney Harbour, Australia). Repeatability in po

Mussels get higher: A study on the occurrence of cocaine and benzoylecgonine in seawater, sediment and mussels from a subtropical ecosystem (Santos Bay, Brazil).

Data on the occurrence of cocaine (COC) and benzoylecgonine (BE) in marine environmental compartments are still limited, with few studies reporting superficial water contamination, mainly in tropical zones. In this sense, environmental data of these substances are essential to identify potential polluting sources, as well as their impact in costal ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of COC and BE in seawater, sediment and mussels from a subtropical coastal zone (Santos Bay, São Paulo, Brazil), as well as to determine a field measured Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF). Toxicological effects and bioaccumulation of fullerene C60 (FC60) in the marine bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum.

Fullerene C60 (FC60), with its unique physical properties, has been used in many applications in recent decades. The increased likelihood of direct release into the environment has raised interest in understanding the biological effects of FC60 to aquatic organisms. Nowadays, only few studies have analysed FC60 effects and bioaccumulation in marine organisms following in vivo exposure. To provide new data about FC60 toxicity, Ruditapes philippinarum was selected as target species to assess potential adverse effects of the contaminant. Clams were exposed for 1, 3 and 7 days to predicted environ

Pisidium coreanum Inhibits Multinucleated Osteoclast Formation and Prevents Estrogen-Deficient Osteoporosis.

Mollusks have served as important sources of human food and medicine for a long time. Raw Pisidium coreanum, a freshwater bivalve of the phylum Mollusca, is used in traditional therapies in parts of Asia. However, the therapeutic effects of Pisidium coreanum on bone diseases are not known. We investigated the functional roles of Pisidium coreanum in osteoporotic bone diseases. Pisidium coreanum inhibited the differentiation of bone marrow-derived monocytic cells into mature osteoclasts in vitro. The ovariectomized mice that received oral administration of Pisidium coreanum showed improvements

Paralytic Shellfish Toxins in Surf Clams Mesodesma donacium during a Large Bloom of Alexandrium catenella Dinoflagellates Associated to an Intense Shellfish Mass Mortality.

In late February 2016, a harmful algal bloom (HAB) of Alexandrium catenella was detected in southern Chiloé, leading to the banning of shellfish harvesting in an extended geographical area (~500 km). On April 24, 2016, this bloom produced a massive beaching (an accumulation on the beach surface of dead or impaired organisms which were drifted ashore) of surf clams Mesodesma donacium in Cucao Bay, Chiloé. To determine the effect of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins in M. donacium, samples were taken from Cucao during the third massive beaching detected on May 3, 2016. Whole tissue toxi

Widespread episodic thiamine deficiency in Northern Hemisphere wildlife.

Many wildlife populations are declining at rates higher than can be explained by known threats to biodiversity. Recently, thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency has emerged as a possible contributing cause. Here, thiamine status was systematically investigated in three animal classes: bivalves, ray-finned fishes, and birds. Thiamine diphosphate is required as a cofactor in at least five life-sustaining enzymes that are required for basic cellular metabolism. Analysis of different phosphorylated forms of thiamine, as well as of activities and amount of holoenzyme and apoenzyme forms of thiamine-depen

Seasonal, spatial and inter-annual variations of trace metals in mussels from the Adriatic sea: a regional gradient for arsenic and implications for monitoring the impact of off-shore activities.

Mussels are widely used as bioindicator organisms for monitoring chemical pollutants including trace metals. These elements are natural constituents in the marine environment and their basal concentrations in the organisms can be influenced by several environmental and biological factors. The aim of this work was to extend our knowledge on the natural variability of trace metals in mussels tissues, focusing on seasonal and inter-annual fluctuations in a coastal reference site of the Adriatic coast (Portonovo); a total of 39 samplings were performed during 5 years, providing an extended data-se

Extraction and cleaning methods to detect yessotoxins in contaminated mussels.

Yessotoxin (YTX) and its analogues are a newly recognized group of toxins with increased presence in shellfish in recent years. They can be quantified by various functional assays due to their interaction with phosphodiesterases (PDEs). One of these assays detects the binding between the YTX and the fluorescently labeled PDE I using fluorescence polarization, a spectroscopic technique based on exciting a fluorescent molecule with plane-polarized light and measuring the polarization degree of the emitted light. The aim of this study was to develop a YTX extraction procedure from mussels that do

Biological activity of pentachlorophenol on the digestive gland cells of the freshwater mussel Unio tumidus.

Many chlorinated phenols and their derivatives are used extensively as insecticides, fungicides and herbicides by industrial and agricultural users throughout the world. Among these substances, pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a broad-spectrum biocide, which is still used as a wood preservative. In this paper, the digestive gland cells were used to assess the effect of PCP in the range of concentrations 3.75-75 microM (0.01-0.2 ppm) on oxidative DNA damage, fluidity changes and peroxidation activity in the plasma membrane. The toxic property of PCP on DNA strand breakage was studied using the comet

The effects of organic and inorganic pollutants on intracellular phosphate compounds in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

1. The effects of sublethal concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants on intracellular energy-rich phosphates in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, were investigated by in vivo 31P-NMR. 2. Formaldehyde (30 and 10 mg/l), phenol, pyridine, mercury and cadmium gave marked reductions in phosphoarginine and, in some cases, the ATP amounts. The reduction in high-energy phosphate was accompanied by an increase in inorganic phosphate in all groups. 3. A "phosphorus index", the product of the ratios between phosphoarginine and inorganic phosphate, and ATP and inorganic phosphate, is suggested, whic

Transfer constants for blood-brain barrier permeation of the neuroexcitatory shellfish toxin, domoic acid.

The cause of the toxic mussel poisoning episode in 1987 was traced to a plankton-produced excitotoxin, domoic acid. Experiments were undertaken to quantitate the degree to which blood-borne domoic acid can permeate the microvasculature to enter the brain. Pentobarbital-anesthetized, adult rats received an i.v. injection of 3H-domoic acid which was permitted to circulate for 3-60 min. Transfer constants (Ki) describing blood-to-brain diffusion of tracer were calculated from analysis of the relationship between brain vs plasma radioactivity with time. Mean values (mL.g-1.s-1 X 10(6] for permeati

One Health perspectives on veterinary residues and bioaccumulation in marine mussels.

The increase in pharmaceutical residues and environmental contaminants, including heavy metals and biotoxins, in coastal ecosystems represents a critical threat to global health. Mussels (Mytilus spp.), as sessile filter feeders, serve as primary bioaccumulators and biological indicators of this chemical pressure, yet their toxicological role in human health is often underestimated. This review explores the physiological and toxicological effects of the accumulation of complex contaminants and pharmaceutical residues, specifically including veterinary drugs that reach the marine environment th

The Hierarchical Organization of the Layered Fibrous Shell of Chamelea gallina Guides Fracture Pathways.

Molluscan shells combine mineralized layers with distinct microstructures that can influence crack propagation. Here, we provide a through-thickness, multiscale characterization of the all-aragonitic shell of the striped venus clam Chamelea gallina and relate its hierarchical textural organization to observed fracture-surface trajectories. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and spatially resolved Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction resolve an outer region comprising (i) convergent and divergent fibrous sublayers sep

De novo transcriptome profiling reveals the bioeffect of the clam (Cyclina sinensis) to graded extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF, 50 Hz) exposure.

The rapid expansion of offshore and onshore wind farms has raised concerns regarding the potential ecological impacts of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) on benthic organisms. In this study, we investigated the intensity-dependent effects of ELF-EMF exposure on the bivalve Cyclina sinensis, a dominant species inhabiting in coastal mudflats. Individuals were exposed to two intensities of ELF-EMF (50 Hz) for 14 days: a low-intensity group at (5 ± 1) μT and a high-intensity group at (15 ± 1) μT, alongside a control group maintained under ambient magnetic field conditions w

Contamination of mussels with microorganisms, metals, and biotoxins: a historical analysis from Portugal.

Mussels (Mytilus spp.) are an important seafood product and a sentinel species for environmental contamination. This work aimed to analyze Portuguese monitoring data for mussels to identify seasonal and spatial trends in microbiological, biotoxins, and metal contamination. Data, from 2013 to 2025, were obtained from publicly available records from the official control program. Harvested mussels were generally safe for consumption, with most samples complying with microbiological Class A parameters (75.5%) and metals only exceeding regulatory limits once. Conversely, okadaic acid toxin group (i

Integrating sustainable bivalve aquaculture into water quality strategies to mitigate anthropogenic nitrogen loads.

Excessive nitrogen runoff from agricultural and urban sources poses a significant threat to coastal ecosystems. Elevated dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) levels contribute to algal blooms, hypoxia, and coral degradation, undermining the health and resilience of the reef system. In addition to land-based management, bivalve aquaculture has been proposed as a potential solution for mitigating nitrogen loads in coastal environments. However, studies assessing the suitability, scale, and potential benefits of such production for reducing impacts of nitrogen runoff are often lacking. This study e
