BACKGROUND: Bicarbonate concentration is widely used to assess acid-base disorders in patients, and the concentration can be directly measured or calculated. When discrepant results between measured bicarbonate (mHCO3-) and calculated bicarbonate (cHCO3-) are observed, it can lead to confusion among clinicians and potential for misdiagnosis. Here we assessed the agreement between cHCO3- from the Radiometer blood gas analyzer and mHCO3- from 3 different chemistry instruments.
METHODS: Three institutions that measure bicarbonate using chemistry analyzers from 3 different manufacturers and deriv

BACKGROUND: The oxygen reserve index (ORi) is a real-time, continuous index measured with multi-wavelength pulse CO-oximetry technology. It … CONCLUSIONS: In anaesthetised dogs, ORi may detect mild hyperoxaemia, although it does not replace blood gas analysis for measuring the arterial partial pressure of oxygen. ORi monitoring could be used to non-invasively assess oxygenation in dogs receiving supplemental oxygen, limiting excessive hyperoxia.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the effects of pre-analytical care on total carbon dioxide (tCO2 ) in hemodialysis patients, as calculated by blood gas analysis (ctCO2 ) or measured by an enzymatic assay (mtCO2 ).
METHODS: Blood samples were collected via vascular access before dialysis sessions. For blood gas analysis, eight aliquots were collected, refrigerated or non-refrigerated, and analyzed at 0, 4, 8, and 24 h after collection. A blood sample was then collected for the enzymatic method and distributed into 14 aliquots. Half of the aliquots were refrigerated. The samples analyzed at time poi…

INTRODUCTION: Although humans are capable of enduring critically low levels of oxygen, many hypoxaemic patients die despite aggressive therapies. Mimicking the physiological hyperventilation necessary to survive extreme hypoxic conditions could minimize the derangements caused by acute hypoxic-hypoxia. The objective of this study was to measure the haemodynamic-biochemical response to artificially induced hyperventilation in hypoxic rats.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four deeply anaesthetized and mechanically ventilated rats were allocated to 3 groups: control (n = 5, FiO2 = 1); hypoxic spont

Nasal cannulae for oxygen administration are applied abundantly in clinical medicine, even though their use may cause patient discomfort. Although nasal cannulae may be effective in increasing oxygen uptake to some degree, they are unlikely to prevent severe hypoxaemia. Furthermore, they are often used when arterial oxygen saturation is already ≥ 90%, in which case additional oxygenation is usually not required, nor does it relieve the sensation of dyspnoea.

PURPOSE: Short umbilical cords are associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Clinicians may rely on measurements made by pathologists, which do not include portions of the cord remaining n the child or sent for blood gasses.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of term placentas. Sequential cases from January through August 2017 were reviewed from the Pathology archive.
RESULTS: 198 placentas were recorded as either third trimester of mature, of which 146 were 37 or greater weeks of gestation. Of these 146, 142 had cords measuring less than 35 cm, the definition of short. Mean co

We previously found that blood samples collected from steady-state patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) without exposure to air contain a new type of reversibly sickled cells (RSCs) with blunt edges at a level of as high as 78%. Since partial oxygenation of once-deoxygenated sickled cells with pointy edges to near venous oxygen pressure generates similar sickled cells with blunt edges in vitro, we named them as partially oxygenated sickled cells (POSCs). On the other hand, partial deoxygenation of once-oxygenated SS cells to venous oxygen pressure generates partially deoxygenated sickled ce

Methemoglobin (MetHb) is a form of hemoglobin in which heme iron is oxidized and unable to bind oxygen; its normal basal production is counteracted by an efficient MetHb-reduction pathway. The causes of methemoglobinemia are classified as congenital or acquired. Shortly after his birth, the 5-hour-old male Caucasian neonate, whose case we present herein, developed central cyanosis that was unresponsive to supplemental oxygen. Oxygen saturation as determined via pulse oximetry was normal. In contrast, blood gas testing by multiwave CO-oximetry indicated decreased fractional oxyhemoglobin and an

The release of catecholamines during hypoxia has received limited attention in amphibians and the adrenergic regulation of cardio-pulmonary functions is, therefore, not well understood at the organismic level. To describe the changes in plasma catecholamine concentrations, we exposed toads (Bufo marinus) to different levels of hypoxia at two temperatures (15 and 25 degrees C). In addition, blood oxygen binding properties were determined in vitro at 15 and 25 degrees C at two different pH values. Hypoxia elicited a significant increase in plasma catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) at

Quantitative electroencephalography was assessed in 6 dogs anesthetized with 1.8% end-tidal halothane, under conditions of eucapnia, hypocapnia, and hypercapnia. Ventilation was controlled in each condition. Heart rate, arterial blood pressure, core body temperature, arterial pH, blood gas tensions, end-tidal CO2 tension, and end-tidal halothane concentration were monitored throughout the study. A 21-lead linked-ear montage was used for recording the EEG. Quantitative electroencephalographic data were stored on an optical disk for analysis at a later date. Values for absolute power of the EEG

We investigated the relationship between the frequency components of myoelectric power spectra of the diaphragm and the level of diaphragmatic contraction in seven anaesthetized spontaneously breathing pigs. Electromyographic activity of the costal and crural portions of the diaphragm were recorded with fish-hook electrodes and the frequency-power spectra during inspiration were computed and expressed in terms of centroid frequency (fc). Diaphragmatic force was indirectly assessed as transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) which was measured with balloon-catheter systems placed in the abdomen and oe

Venous oxygen tension (pO2) was measured in discrete samples of blood obtained through the femoral vein of cardiac catheterisation patients before, during and after application of sustained external graduated pressure in the form of compression stockings (T. E. D. Kendall). There was a significant reduction (p less than 0.05) of pO2 from the baseline value both 30 sec and one minute after the application of the pressure stockings. Thereafter, the pO2 rose to baseline values. Two minutes after the stockings were removed there was again a significant reduction (p less than 0.05) of pO2 from the

Differences in blood gas tensions and pH between brachial venous blood (BVB) and mixed venous blood obtained from the pulmonary artery (PAB) were compared in anesthetized male White Leghorn chickens to determine if BVB as obtained in routine venipuncture cold be used to estimate mixed venous values of pO2, pCO2, and pH. When paired samples were compared over the range of 25 to 68 mm Hg, brachial pO2 was 5.7 mm Hg higher (P less than .001) than PAB pO2. Brachial pCO2 was 4.25 mm Hg higher (P less than .001) than PAB pCO2 over the range of 17 to 56 mm Hg. Brachial pH was .066 units lower (p less
