Influence of body mass index on severity of rotator cuff tears.

BACKGROUND: Research on the relationship between obesity and rotator cuff tears (RCTs) has been limited to the impact of obesity on the results of arthroscopic repair of RCTs; thus, a need for rigorous research controlling for other factors affecting RCTs is warranted, especially to better understand the impact of body mass index (BMI) on RCT severity. METHODS: A retrospective study of admission records contained in electronic medical records pertaining to patients who were admitted for RCT repair on 1 shoulder between January 2018 and July 2022 was conducted. In total, 386 patients were incl…

Body-mass index and obesity in infertile couples in southwest China.

To investigate body mass index (BMI) of infertile couples and analyze its related influencing factors in Southwest China, so as to prevent and control the obesity. We analyzed the data of a total number of 8877 infertile couples who received treatment in our assisted reproductive center from October 2012 to March 2022. The mean age and BMI of men and women were 33.5 years, 23.9 kg/m2 and 31.6 years, 21.9 kg/m2. The prevalence of overweight (BMI 25-29.9) was 30.9% in men and 14.7% in women, 3.7% of men and 1.6% of women were obese (BMI ≥ 30), while 3.6% of men and 10.8% of women were underweigh…

Height, weight, and body mass index in patients with familial dysautonomia.

BACKGROUND: Children with familial dysautonomia (FD) are smaller and grow more slowly than the general population. It is unknown whether this abnormal growth is due to comorbidities that patients with FD live with, or if it is a direct effect of the disease-causing homozygous ELP-1 mutations. Here, we created growth curves for weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) in male and female children with FD to monitor the nutritional status of patients with FD. METHODS: We used the New York University (NYU) FD Registry which includes data from 680 individuals with FD who were followed longitudina…

Vascular dysfunction and body mass index in African adults with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Impaired vascular compliance is common among persons with HIV (PWH) and a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), though many studies documenting this are from regions with a high prevalence of overweight and obesity. The prevalence and characteristics of impaired vascular compliance among PWH with low body mass index (BMI) is not well described, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where the majority of PWH live, a low BMI is more common, and the burden of CVD is rising. AIM: To assess non-invasive vascular compliance measurements, including augmentation index (AIX), pu…

Rehabilitation outcomes in Huntington disease patients with low body mass index.

OBJECTIVES: A catabolic state and a progressive body weight loss are a well-documented hallmark of Huntington Disease (HD). No study is still available on the effectiveness of intensive in-hospital rehabilitation in HD patients with low body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Twenty HD patients with low BMI value were enrolled in this study. Disease severity was assessed before and after rehabilitation by the Barthel Index, the Total Functional Capacity Scale, and the Physical Performance Test. RESULTS: BMI-scores correlated with clinical measures before and after rehabilitation. All patients showed…

Association between DNA repair capacity and body mass index in women.

OBJECTIVE: Examine whether DNA repair capacity (DRC) levels are associated with body mass index (BMI) in adult women. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: A nested study composed of 539 women without breast cancer (BC) from a case-control BC study in addition to 104 that were recruited later for a total of 643. MEASUREMENTS: DRC levels were measured in lymphocytes using a host-cell reactivation assay with a luciferase reporter gene damaged by UVC. This assay measures the efficiency of nucleotide excision repair (NER). Log-binomial regression model was used. The prevalence ratio (PR) was used to evaluate…

Body Mass Index Specifiers in Anorexia Nervosa: Anything below the "Extreme"?

The validity of body mass index (BMI) specifiers for anorexia nervosa (AN) has been questioned, but their applicability to inpatients with extremely low BMIs and their prognostic validity are currently unknown. Therefore, we designed this study: (a) to test current BMI specifiers in severe inpatients; (b) to explore a "very extreme" specifier (VE-AN; BMI ≤ 13.5); and (c) to verify inpatients' hospitalization outcome according to BMI severity. We enrolled 168 inpatients with AN completing the following: Eating disorder Examination-Questionnaire, Eating Disorder Inventory-2, State-Trait Anxiety …

The Association of Body Mass Index with Outcomes after Carotid Endarterectomy.

BACKGROUND: Patients who are obese or underweight are traditionally at higher risk for perioperative morbidity and mortality. The effect of body mass index (BMI) on outcomes after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is unclear. Our goal was to analyze the association of BMI with perioperative and long-term outcomes after elective CEA. METHODS: The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) database was queried from 2003-2018 for patients undergoing elective CEAs. Patients were categorized into 5 BMI cohorts - underweight (UW, BMI < 18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (NW, BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (OW, BMI 25-…

Longitudinal associations between executive control and body mass index across childhood.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity remains a prevalent public health concern. Executive control, a set of higher-order cognitive abilities for directing attention and behaviour, has been identified as a malleable factor potentially related to weight outcomes in youth. However, the directionality of this relationship remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study examined reciprocal associations between three executive control components-inhibitory control, working memory and flexible shifting-and BMI (body mass index) percentile during childhood. METHODS: At four points throughout elementary school, a c…

Prepregnancy body mass index and spina bifida: Potential contributions of bias.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologists have consistently observed associations between prepregnancy obesity and spina bifida in offspring. Most studies, however, used self-reported body mass index (potential for exposure misclassification) and incompletely ascertained cases of spina bifida among terminations of pregnancy (potential for selection bias). We conducted a quantitative bias analysis to explore the potential effects of these biases on study results. METHODS: We included 808 mothers of fetuses or infants with spina bifida (case mothers) and 7,685 mothers of infants without birth defects (contro…

Body Mass Index at Presentation of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Children.

PURPOSE: The evidence for an association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and obesity is conflicting. Therefore, we set out to review the body mass index (BMI) at presentation of IBD to understand if the rise of the obesity rate in the general population, lead to an increase of obesity in patients with IBD at the time of diagnosis. METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients with IBD seen at Children's Hospital and Medical Center from January 1st 2010 to December 31st 2014. From the initial visit and endoscopy, we obtained: age; sex; BMI; disease phenotype; disease severity. RESULT…
