Cortisol nonsuppression in depression: relationship to clinical variables.

The dexamethasone suppression test was performed in 63 depressed patients and 43 normal controls. Cortisol nonsuppression was found in 47.6% of the depressed patients and 4.6% of the controls. Among depressed patients both age and reported weight loss, but not severity of depression, were significantly related to postdexamethasone plasma cortisol levels. Patients who were cortisol suppressors had experienced significantly more life events before the onset of depression and had significantly higher hostility scores on a personality questionnaire than cortisol nonsuppressors.

The complexity of the relationship between thyroid disease and body weight.

The factors influencing the control of body weight are numerous and include many hormones. Even though levels of thyroid hormone might not always be the major factor affecting weight, in the sense that large changes in weight can occur despite a euthyroid state, there are notable changes in weight, appetite and body composition associated with excesses and deficiencies of thyroid hormone. Exploring the effect of thyroid hormone on weight is facilitated by studying the disease states of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, the development and treatment of which can be associated with substantial

The Influence of Thyroid Dysfunction on Body Composition and Weight Trajectory.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid dysfunction produces characteristic changes in weight and body composition, but treatment often results in progressive weight gain. METHODS: This review examines underlying mechanisms, predictors, and implications for patient management. RESULTS: There are significant changes in weight, appetite, and body composition associated with underproduction and overproduction of thyroid hormone. The disease states of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can be studied in order to document and understand the significant changes in body weight that ensue with these conditions. In addit

Effects of low-dose oral contraceptives on body weight: results of a randomized study of up to 13 cycles of use.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of 2 oral contraceptives (OCs) on body weight. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized, parallel-group, multicenter study of 1,723 women taking an OC with norgestimate (NGM) 180/215/250 microg/ethinyl estradiol (EE) 25 microg vs. 1,171 women taking on OC with norethindrone acetate 1 mg/EE 20 microg for 6-13 cycles was performed. Body weight changes between baseline and cycle 6 and baseline and cycle 13 were analyzed. Analysis included not only changes in mean body weight but also the distribution of changes that were within 5% of baseline weight, 5-10% of baseline weight a…

A longitudinal study on glucose tolerance and other cardiovascular risk factors: associations within an elderly population.

From 1971 until 1975, 204 patients from a general practice, aged 64-87 at entry, were examined annually. At every examination body weight, serum lipids, and systolic blood pressure were measured, and a complete glucose tolerance test was carried out. Clinically diagnosed diabetics were excluded. Adjusted for age and sex, the annual change in the area under the glucose curve (AUC) was significantly associated with body weight change. Changes in serum total cholesterol, serum triglycerides, and systolic blood pressure were also associated with body weight change. The results were independent of

Adjusting body weight for edema in severely burned patients.

Weight loss is difficult to quantify in critically ill burn patients, as the presence of edema can mask changes in dry body weight. We sough … to either lower extremity) (p < 0.01, R2 = 0.81). These results may allow us to better estimate dry body weight changes in our edematous patients with severe burns. Nutrition goals can be adjusted earlier, when appropriate, based on these estimated dry body weight changes.

Increased weight-bearing load reduces biological body weight while sodium and water balances are unaffected.

Increased weight-bearing load has previously been shown to reduce body weight in obese rodents, primarily by lowering food intake. However, it remains unclear whether increased loading also affects body weight through acute changes in extracellular water. This study aimed to determine whether increased weight-bearing load acutely produces negative sodium and water balances, as indicators of changes in whole-body extracellular sodium and water content. Diet-induced obese (DIO) rats were housed in metabolic cages with free access to hypotonic 0.5% NaCl solution and a low-sodium, high-fat diet. A

Changes in body composition in women using long-acting reversible contraception.

OBJECTIVE: Users of hormonal long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) report weight gain as a side effect, but few studies have assessed body composition change among LARC users. We evaluated weight and body composition of healthy women using the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS), copper intrauterine device (copper IUD) or etonogestrel implant (ENG implant). We hypothesized that weight gain and body composition over 12 months would not differ between copper IUD, LNG-IUS and ENG implant users. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a prospective cohort study of a subgroup of women enrolled i

[Extremely varied rectal temperatures in 10 fatalities after a house fire--a contribution to the significance of body weight in cadaver cooling].

Eight children at the age of one to eleven years, their mother and uncle were victims of fire that had broken out in their flat. They all died of combined carbon monoxide cyanide poisoning. The rectal temperature of the bodies taken nearly eight hours later ranged from 16 degrees C to 29 degrees C. Using the rectal temperature time of death nomogram (Henssge 1982) with reference to corrective factors of the body weight (Henssge and Madea 1988) to find out when they died, the results corresponded with the enquiries made by the police except for three cases. The rectal temperature of the apparen

Stress-related testicular changes in Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats following oral administration of an interleukin-8 inhibitor.

We describe testicular changes in Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats following oral administration of DF2156A, a novel allosteric inhibitor of the CXCR1/CXCR2 receptors of interleukin-8. These testicular changes, which were associated with clinical signs, modifications of body weight parameters (decrease of body weight and weight gain) and a decrease of testosterone serum levels, were not considered to be a direct toxic effect of the test substance but secondary to a likely induced stress resulting from the oral administration of a high dose (200 mg/kg/day) of the test substance to male rats for a

The effect of repeated physical disturbance on soft tissue decomposition--are taphonomic studies an accurate reflection of decomposition?

Although the relationship between decomposition and postmortem interval has been well studied, almost no studies examined the potential effects of physical disturbance occurring as a result of data collection procedures. This study compares physically disturbed rabbit carcasses with a series of undisturbed carcasses to assess the presence and magnitude of any effects resulting from repetitive disturbance. Decomposition was scored using visual assessment of soft tissue changes, and numerical data such as weight loss and carcass temperature were recorded. The effects of disturbance over time on

Gaining "The Quarantine 15:" Perceived versus observed weight changes in college students in the wake of COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Amidst restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19, jokes have surfaced regarding weight gain during the pandemic. The current study documents perceived changes since COVID-19 and compares these to observed longitudinal changes in reported weight, BMI, and how college students described their weight from January to April 2020. METHOD: Undergraduates (N = 90; 88% female) completed on-line assessments before and after students were required to leave campus due to COVID-19. Time 1 and Time 2 surveys collected demographic information, height, weight, and a Likert-scale rating to desc

Estimation of Body Fluid Status by Fluid Balance and Body Weight in Critically Ill Adult Patients: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The charting of daily fluid balances and measurement of body weight changes are two noninvasive methods commonly used in the intensive care unit for estimating body fluid status. The determination of body fluid status plays an important role in the management of critically ill patients where aggressive fluid resuscitation is often required. This can adversely affect patient outcomes if changes in fluid distribution are not detected early in patients who are susceptible to fluid overload. AIM: To synthesize the best available evidence on the accuracy of daily fluid balance charting…

Melanocortin Receptors: Emerging Targets for the Treatment of Pigmentation, Inflammation, Stress, Weight Disorders and Sexual Dysfunction.

Melanocortins are tiny protein molecules formed by the post-translational cleavage of proopiomelanocortin. These are bioactive peptides that are responsible for human and lower animal pigmentation patterns, energy homeostasis, and sexual function modulation. These peptides regulate numerous physiological functions by being generated in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. Melanocortins elicit their varied biological effects by binding to a separate family of G protein, two primary proteolytic enzymes, proconvertases 1 and 2, according to recent research. These breakthroughs have

Interlimb and Intralimb Synergy Modeling for Lower Limb Assistive Devices: Modeling Methods and Feature Selection.

CONTEXT: For clinicians managing weight loss in patients with HIV, it would be useful to understand how changes in lean body mass (LBM) effect physical functioning, and whether LBM is more strongly related to physical functioning than total body weight (TBW). OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship of changes in LBM and changes in total body weight (TBW) to changes in self-reported physical functioning in men and women with HIV infection. METHODS: Study design was longitudinal analysis of 1474 patient-intervals (each interval was approximately 6 months long) in 486 persons. Patients were pa

Changes in fat mass and fat-free-mass are associated with incident hypertension in four population-based studies from Germany.

BACKGROUND: We estimated the association of changes in body weight, waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) with changes in blood pressure and incident hypertension using data from four German population-based studies. METHODS: We analyzed data from 4467 participants, aged 21 to 82 years not taking antihypertensive medication and not having type 2 diabetes mellitus or a history of myocardial infarction at baseline and follow-up, from four population-based studies conducted in Germany. Body weight, WC, and blood pressure were measured at baseline and follow-up (median f

Associations of Brain Reactivity to Food Cues with Weight Loss, Protein Intake and Dietary Restraint during the PREVIEW Intervention.

The objective was to assess the effects of a weight loss and subsequent weight maintenance period comprising two diets differing in protein intake, on brain reward reactivity to visual food cues. Brain reward reactivity was assessed with functional magnetic resonance imaging in 27 overweight/obese individuals with impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance (HOMA-IR: 3.7 ± 1.7; BMI: 31.8 ± 3.2 kg/m²; fasting glucose: 6.4 ± 0.6 mmol/L) before and after an 8-week low energy diet followed by a 2-year weight maintenance period, with either high protein (HP) or medium protein (MP) di

Changes in the cross-sections of the nasal cavity assessed by acoustic rhinometry in the study population as a guideline for attempts to standardize nasal provocation tests.

INTRODUCTION: A specific difficulty in the standardization of nasal allergen challenge tests as measured by acoustic rhinometry is the lack of reference values measured according to dependent changes, for example height and weight/height- or weight-dependent changes. Human growth and development rates and other changes the human body undergoes throughout the lifetime depend closely on the environment, sex, and race. AIM: To assess selected anthropometric (body weight and height) and rhinometric (nasal cross-sectional areas) measurements concerning subject age and sex. MATERIAL AND METHODS: T
