The purpose of this study was to review the construction of a one-bone forearm performed to change the position of the forearm in children with fixed supination deformity due to upper extremity neurologic deficit. The one-bone forearm arthrodesis has been previously described in treating trauma, tumors, infection, and congenital deformities. It has not been described to improve forearm position in neurologically impaired upper extremities. We retrospectively evaluated 6 pediatric patients with upper extremity weakness and severe supination contracture who underwent forearm arthrodesis in neutr

Primary malignant giant cell tumour of bone is extremely rare. It is distinctly separate from benign metastasising giant cell tumour of bone and secondary malignant giant cell tumour which occurs in response to radiotherapy and repeated curettage of benign giant cell tumor. The tumor has high mortality rate. It usually affects lower end of femur and upper end of tibia. Two usually affects lower end of femur and upper end of tibia. Two cases, on involving upper end of tibia and other in vertebra are discussed. Extreme paucity of literature prompted to publish this article. A short review of rad

The basic role of the shoulder, upper arm, elbow, forearm, and wrist is to place the hand in the appropriate position, so that it can fulfill its function. The upper extremity, especially the wrist and the hand, has a very complex anatomy with a large number of bones, muscles, tendons and nerves. They are essential to work and sport activities and are subject to acute and/or chronic mechanical injuries. This is why overuse injuries are the most common in these regions. They are often characterised by tendinitis, tenosynovitis, tunnel syndromes, or stress fractures. This paper gives an overview

AIMS: In this study, we used finite element analysis to evaluate the mechanical behavior of the lower extremity under three conditions: an intact fibula, a fractured fibula without fixation, and a fractured fibula stabilized using the Stryker VariAx 2 One-Third Tubular Plating System.
METHODS: Three-dimensional solid models incorporating detailed representations of bones, ligaments, and tendons were developed from CT and MRI data. Loading conditions were imposed simulating an axial compressive load of 700 N applied to the upper extremity of the resected femur and a torsional load of 6000 Nmm

BACKGROUND: Abnormal scaphoid alignment after fracture is used as an indication for fixation. Acceptable alignment after reduction and fixation of scaphoid fractures is not well defined. We systematically reviewed the literature to identify how scaphoid malunion is currently defined and by what parameters.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Multiple databases were searched for studies published in the English language that reported on outcomes after scaphoid malunion and included measurements to d

Focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia is a benign bone lesion known to cause deformity around the knee in young children. Three cases affecting the long bones of the upper limb have been reported, and little is known of the natural history. This study reports seven more cases affecting the upper extremity. All patients presented with deformity in early childhood. The location was the radius in two, the ulna in three, the proximal phalanx in one, and the middle phalanx in one. The radiographic appearance of the condition is diagnostic, regardless of the bone it affects. Proportional shortening of

Background The use of the fibula autograft has been a reliable method in the reconstruction of long bone defects after tumor resection. The objective of this study was to report the outcomes fibular grafting in terms of graft union, functional score, complications, and oncologic outcome. Methods A retrospective review of patients with fibular grafting after tumor resection was done from January 1, 1993 to December 31, 2013. The primary outcome was graft union and the revised musculoskeletal tumor society scoring system (MSTS score). The secondary outcomes were oncologic outcomes, complications

Angio-and phlebography, as well as pathomorphological studies were made on epiphyseal cartilaginous plate, diaphyseal bone tissue and skin of patients with partial gigantism of upper extremities. Significant developmental anomalies were found in the formation of palmar arches and digital arteries, as well as hypoplasia and aplasia of deep brachial and antebrachial veins. Light and electron microscopy revealed epiphyseal plate dystrophy and dysplasia, tubular bone osteoporosis, subcutaneous fat hyperplasia. The data obtained suggest a pathogenetic relationship between the vascular formation and

BACKGROUND: Many orthopaedic surgical procedures involve reattachment of a single tendon to bone. Whether tendon-to-bone healing is better facilitated by tendon fixation within a bone tunnel or on a cortical surface is unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate tendon-healing within a bone tunnel compared with that on the cortical surface in a rabbit model of biceps tenodesis.
METHODS: Thirty-two rabbits (24 weeks of age) underwent unilateral proximal biceps tenodesis with tendon fixation within a bone tunnel (BT group) or on the cortical surface (SA [surface attachment] group). Posto

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The "Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing" (E.S.I.N.) of French authors as a method of treatment of children's diaphyseal long bone fractures is well known from nineties of the last century. After we got familiar with the technique we wanted to introduce it in other indications, especially some metaphyseal long bone fractures and injuries of metacarpals, meta-tarsals and phalangeal bones in the growing skeleton.
MATERIAL: During two last years, i.e. 1999-2000, ESIN procedure in 97 children was performed in our Regional Pediatric Trauma Centre. That was 39% of all osteos

OBJECTIVE: To investigate abnormalities in the skeleton (with the exclusion of the skull, cervical spine, hands and feet) in patients with Laron syndrome, who have an inborn growth hormone resistance and congenital insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) deficiency.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: The study group was composed of 15 untreated patients with Laron syndrome (seven male and eight female) aged 21-68 years. Plain films of the axial and appendicular skeleton were evaluated retrospectively for abnormalities in structure and shape. The cortical width of the long bones was evaluated qualitatively and

Although it is much less common than injuries in the lower extremities, an upper extremity stress injury can have a significant impact on an athlete. If an accurate and timely diagnosis is to be made, the clinician must have a high index of suspicion of a stress fracture in any athlete who is involved in a throwing, weightlifting, or upper extremity weight-bearing sport and presents with chronic pain in the upper extremity. Imaging should play an integral role in the work-up of these patients; if initial radiographs are unrevealing, further cross-sectional imaging should be strongly considered

Various congenital and acquired disorders can affect the upper extremity in pediatric and adolescent patients. MR imaging can provide unique anatomic and diagnostic information in the evaluation of many of these disorders, including inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, and arthritic conditions. This article rounds out the issue on pediatric musculoskeletal MR imaging. It focuses on the evaluation of more common congenital disorders, and mainly sports-related injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist in children. MR imaging can be more challenging in diagnosis of some of these disorders. Feat

BACKGROUND: Nonunion is a common complication following a fracture in the setting of previous radiotherapy; however, currently there is a paucity of data describing treatment for these nonunions in the upper extremity. Free vascularized fibular (FVF) flaps successfully treat bone defects; however, their efficacy with respect to treatment of radiated nonunions is limited. The purpose of the study was to assess the outcome following FVF for radiation-associated upper extremity nonunions.
METHODS: Seven patients underwent FVF for the treatment of radiation-associated upper extremity nonunion bet

Although 90% of the surgical procedures performed on patients with OI are on the lower limbs, intramedullary fixation of the humerus may at times be indicated also in the upper limb for the correction of deformity and improvement of function. Upper limb deformities are generally present only in patients with severe disease (osteogenesis imperfecta congenita or osteogenesis imperfecta tarda I). The recommendations expressed in this paper are based on experience with 36 intramedullary rod fixation procedures on the upper limb in 12 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta, including 24 on the humer

Men with spine fractures have reduced vertebral body (VB) volume and volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD). Men with hip fractures have reduced femoral neck (FN) volume and vBMD, site-specific deficits that may have their origins in growth. To describe the tempo of growth in regional bone size, bone mineral content (BMC), and vBMD, we measured bone length, periosteal and endocortical diameters, BMC, and vBMD using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 184 boys aged between 7 and 17 years. Before puberty, growth was more rapid in the legs than in the trunk. During puberty, leg growth slowed whil

UNLABELLED: Pathological fractures in children are uncommon manifestations of underlying bone lesions. Differences in biomechanical loading and lesion distribution between the upper and lower extremities may result in distinct fracture characteristics and clinical presentations. The aim of this study was to characterize pathological fractures in the growing skeleton and to identify location-specific differences between upper- and lower-extremity fractures regarding patient demographics, trauma mechanisms, fracture characteristics, and underlying lesion types. This retrospective single-center s

BACKGROUND: Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO) is an autoinflammatory skeletal disease characterized by unifocal or multifocal nonbacterial inflammatory bone lesions in the metaphysis of long bones. Common sites of CRMO are tibia, pelvis, proximal femur, clavicle, calcaneum and vertebrae. However, unifocal presentation or presentation in adults, atypical locations, and absence of recurrence have also been reported.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We describe two cases of female patients with unifocal presentation of nonbacterial inflammatory bone lesions in the upper and lower extremity.
