Latent forms of transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-beta 2) in breast cyst fluid.

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is secreted by cells in high molecular weight, latent forms and the in vivo mechanisms for the activation remain largely an enigma. Women who have palpable breast cyst with intracystic Na/K < 3 may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than those with intracystic Na/K > 3. Finding of significantly higher concentrations of TGF-beta 2 in the Na/K > 3 group than Na/K < 3 group may explain the lower risk of breast cancer in the Na/K > 3 group. The aim of the present study was to characterise the latent forms of TGF-beta 2 in breast cyst fluid usi…

Circulating immune complexes in human breast cyst fluids: relationship with intracystic immunoglobulin and electrolyte levels.

Circulating immune complexes, the major classes of immunoglobulins and electrolyte concentrations were measured in sixty-two breast cyst fluids aspirated in women affected by gross cystic breast disease. Two main classes of cysts were defined according to the Na/K ratio. Appreciable levels of immunoglobulins were found in almost all samples examined; 66% of breast cyst fluids showed increased levels of immune complexes. A highly significant linear correlation between increased values of immune complexes and immunoglobulin M (p less than 0.001) was found in apocrine cysts, characterized by Na/K…

Regulation of progesterone-binding breast cyst protein GCDFP-24 secretion by estrogens and androgens in human breast cancer cells: a new marker of steroid action in breast cancer.

We have previously demonstrated that androgens are potent inhibitors of breast cancer cell proliferation under both basal and estrogen-induced incubation conditions, while they suppress expression of the estrogen and progesterone receptors. To better understand the mechanisms responsible for the antagonism between androgens and estrogens in breast cancer and to obtain a new tumor marker for the actions of these two steroids, we have investigated the effects of androgens and estrogens on expression of the major protein found in human breast gross cystic disease fluid, namely GCDFP-24. This stud

Appearance of breast cysts in planar geometry photoacoustic mammography using 1064-nm excitation.

In the search for improved imaging modalities for detection and diagnosis of breast cancer, a high negative prediction value is also important. Photoacoustic (optoacoustic) imaging is a relatively new technique that has high potential for visualizing breast malignancies, but little is known about the photoacoustic appearance of benign lesions. In this work, we investigate the visibility of benign breast cysts in forward-mode photoacoustic mammography using 1064-nm light, as currently applied in the Twente photoacoustic mammoscope. Results from (Monte Carlo and k-wave) simulations and phantom m…

[The diagnostic and therapeutic validity of pneumoradiography of breast cysts in the light of personal experience with 236 cases].

Personal experience of 236 breast cyst aspirations is reported. In 224 cases, insufflation was also successful and pneumocystomammography was carried out, associated always with cytological examination of the aspirated fluid. In 2 cases, the examination made possible a diagnosis of cyst degeneration (0.8%). The number of recurrences was minimal (2.8%). It is concluded that the technique is diagnostically and therapeutically useful.

Effectiveness of single-session ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol sclerotherapy in simple breast cysts.

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of single-session ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol sclerotherapy in simple breast cysts. METHODS: From January 2002 to January 2014, 35 simple breast cysts (mean volume, 8.2 mL; range, 4-33 mL) in 28 females (mean age, 39 years) were evaluated. In a single session, all cysts were aspirated using 20G needles, refilled with 99% ethanol (90% of the volume of the aspirated fluid), and reaspirated completely after 10 minutes of exposure under ultrasound guidance. Follow-up ultrasonography examinations were performed at one week, one month, thre…

FDG uptake in unilateral breast related to breastfeeding practice in a patient of pulmonary hydatid cyst.

Unusual FDG uptake in unilateral breast on FDG PET study in a 32-year-old lactating woman with recent diagnosis of left upper lobe hydatid cyst is described. The FDG PET study demonstrated uptake in the periphery of the lesion corresponding to the hydatid cyst. In addition, there was an unusually intense FDG tracer uptake in the right breast. She was questioned about her breastfeeding practice in view of the unilateral uptake, and she gave a history of feeding her child from the right breast only. This case gives insight into the fact that there is differential glucose transporter activity in

[Electrophoretic patterns of lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes in fluid from 261 benign breast cysts].

BACKGROUND: Some groups have described the presence of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and certain isoenzymes in breast cyst fluids, but their clinical usefulness is unknown. We have studied the behavior of LDH isoenzymes in benign breast cysts fluids with the aim of understand their clinical meaning. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: The study group included 261 benign breast cyst fluids classified, according to the Na+ / K+ ratio, as follows: type I (Na+ / K+ >/= 3): 188, and type II (Na+ / K+ > 3):73. The electrophoretic LDG isoenzymes analysis was carried out with the PARAGON system and the Appaise Junior…

Impalpable breast cysts: utility of cytologic examination of fluid obtained with radiologically guided aspiration.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the utility of cytologic analysis of fluid obtained from impalpable breast cysts by means of radiologically guided aspiration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the reports of cytologic examinations of fluid obtained with sonographically or mammographically guided aspiration of 660 impalpable breast cysts in 583 women during 3 1/2 years. RESULTS: No malignant cells (541 cysts) or insufficient cellular material (86 cysts) was seen with cytologic examination of 95% of the aspirates. Atypical cells were seen with cytologic examination of fluid from…

[Stereotaxic fine-needle aspirations of clinically latent breast cysts: an efficient and neat procedure].

The purpose was to evaluate the interest of stereotaxic fine-needle aspiration for round opacities when the ultrasound and echoguided punctures are inefficient; especially when women are under menopausal hormonal replacement therapy. Sixty stereotactic guided fine-needle aspirations detected by mammography have been performed between january 1990 and august 1996. The stereotaxic procedure is performed with a DMR unit (GE with Stereotix II). Stereotaxic views are done to verify needle position. After aspiration, cytologic examination is realised. Cystic fluid was always obtained and cytologic e

A novel ultrasonic technique for differentiating cysts from solid lesions: preliminary results in the breast.

The feasibility of a new ultrasonic technique to distinguish cysts from solid lesions is explored. High intensity pulses are used to induce acoustic streaming in cyst fluid, and this motion is detected using Doppler techniques. Acoustic streaming cannot be generated in solid lesions, therefore, its detection would indicate a cyst. In six of seven breast cysts motion was clearly generated and detected in vivo. Ultrasonic pulses with intensities up to 4.4 W cm-2 (I(spta) in water) were focused on the cysts for 10 s. Lesion diameters ranged from 0.6 to 2.5 cm; induced flow velocities were less th…

Paragonimiasis in a cystic breast mass: case report and implications for examination of aspirated cyst fluids.

We report a case of paragonimiasis diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration of a breast mass in a middle-aged Korean female with a history of bre … false negative diagnosis in the rare instance of a parasitic cyst. While microscopic examination of breast cyst fluid is probably not warranted in every patient, it may be useful in patients at risk for unusual cystic lesions, especially if clinical and mammographic signs of fibrocystic change are absent.

Mycobacterium avium complex presenting as an infected epidermal inclusion cyst of breast: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), including Mycobacterium intracellulare, are opportunistic pathogens mostly affecting immunocompromised individuals. Cutaneous involvement is rare and can mimic other diseases. Epidermal inclusion cysts (EICs) are benign and uncommon in the breast. MAC infection within an EIC is extremely rare and complicates diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old immunocompetent woman presented with a painful, progressively enlarging right breast mass over six months. Examination revealed an erythematous swelling with draining sinus. Imaging suggested an

Relationship between basic fibroblast growth factor and transforming growth factor-beta 2 in breast cyst fluid.

Women with "apocrine" breast cysts (usually having intracystic Na/K < 3) may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than women with breast cysts lined by flattened epithelium (usually having intracystic Na/K > 3). In this study the concentrations of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), a potent mitogen, and transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-beta 2), which exerts a growth inhibitory effect on epithelial cell types, were measured in breast cyst fluid and their relationship studied. Both growth factors were measured by "sandwich" enzyme immunometric assays. The concentrations of bo…

Giant sized epidermal inclusion cyst of the breast initially mimicking a large fibroadenoma or phyllodes tumor.

Epidermal inclusion cysts are formed by inclusion of keratinizing squamous epithelium within the dermis, resulting in a cyst filled with lamellated keratin. These benign cysts are usually very small and intradermal subcutaneous lesions. They can occur anywhere in the body although they are more common on the face, trunk, neck, extremities and scalp. Only a few cases of epidermal cysts of the breast have been reported in the literature. An epidermal inclusion cyst of the breast can result in several problems, even if the size is unusual. We encountered a case of a giant sized epidermal inclusio
