Synchronous occurrence of lobular breast carcinoma and granulosa cell tumor of ovary mimicking metastatic lobular breast carcinoma.

Breast cancer is one of the main sources of ovarian metastasis. Diffuse sheet of lobular carcinoma cells can strongly mimic granulosa cell tumor (GCT) which itself is a rare ovarian neoplasm constituting <5% of all the ovarian neoplasms. A 55-year-old female presented with a painful lump in the right breast associated with nipple discharge for 4 months, which on radiological and cytological findings was suspicious of an epithelial malignancy. During routine work-up, a solid-cystic lesion in the left ovarian adnexa was identified. The patient underwent right modified radical mastectomy along wi

Synchronous primary breast angiosarcoma with invasive ductal carcinoma.

Primary angiosarcoma (PAS) of the breast is an extremely uncommon variant of breast malignancies. Highly aggressiveness and dismal prognosis characterize this endothelial neoplasm. We report here an unusual case of PAS of the breast occurring in a 46-year-old woman associated with concurrent bilateral invasive ductal carcinoma and ovarian metastases.

Male breast cancer: 6-year experience.

AIM: Breast cancer in men is a very rare neoplasm accounting 1% of all breast cancer with an incidence ratio of 1:100 of men to women and about 1% of all malignancies in men. On the basis of the literature review the authors tried to determine the main characteristics of this rare neoplasm in terms of epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and survival. METHODS: The authors report the experience of the Breast Unit of the San Giovanni Addolorata Hospital in Rome, where 4 cases of male breast cancer were observed and treated over 784 breast cancers. RESULTS: All tumours were ductal carc

Recurrent Myopericytoma of the Breast Mimicking Phyllodes Tumour: A Diagnostic and Management Challenge.

BackgroundMyopericytoma is a rare perivascular neoplasm typically found in the extremities, with only a single previous case report in breast.Case PresentationWe describe a 37-year-old woman presenting with a recurrent left breast mass, initially suspected to be a phyllodes tumour based on clinical and radiological features. Histologic examination revealed a spindle cell neoplasm with concentric perivascular growth, focal necrosis, brisk mitotic activity, and tumour infiltration into the adjacent breast. Immunohistochemistry confirmed positivity for smooth muscle actin and vimentin with a Ki-6

Bilateral orbital metastases from breast carcinoma. A case of false pseudotumor.

OBJECTIVE: To inform clinicians of a metastatic orbital neoplasm that frequently masquerades as an orbital inflammatory syndrome and to stimulate thought regarding this neoplasm's fundamental pathobiology specific to its orbital involvement. DESIGN: Interventional case report and literature review. PARTICIPANTS: A 47-year-old woman with an acquired, bilateral, diffusely infiltrative orbital process is described. INTERVENTION: The clinical and radiographic features of the patient's orbital process are reported. The review of two prior fine-needle aspiration biopsy specimens failed to reveal

Benign tumor mimicking cancer in breast: a case report.

Breast granular cell tumor (BGCT) is a rare neoplasm that typically presents as a benign lesion but is frequently misdiagnosed as breast can … sis of BGCT. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for developing appropriate treatment plans for breast neoplasms. Given the unique characteristics and rarity of these tumors, clinicians, radiologists and pathologists should remain vigilant and consider the possibility of BGCT in the differential diagnosis.

High constant incidence rates of second primary neoplasms.

The incidence of contralateral breast cancer is high and constant with age, around five per 1000 women who had a primary breast cancer. For other neoplasms, the pattern of incidence of second primary neoplasms with age is less known, particularly as for only a few neoplasms the site of origin is not totally removed, and hence remains at risk of a second primary. Using the dataset from the Cancer Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud, we show that the incidence of second neoplasms is constant with age also after oral and pharyngeal, colorectal cancers, cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) and basa

Synchronous presentation of invasive ductal breast carcinoma metastasis and ovarian granulosa cell tumor with literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Synchronous tumors involving the ovary are rare, particularly the coexistence of an ovarian granulosa cell tumor (GCT) and a metastatic ductal breast carcinoma within the same adnexa. While GCTs represent only 1–2% of all ovarian neoplasms, ovarian metastases from breast cancer account for up to 40% of secondary ovarian tumors, with a known predilection for invasive lobular subtypes. The synchronous occurrence of metastatic ductal carcinoma and a primary GCT remains exceptionally uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 45-year-old woman referred because of with a Lum

Bilateral Myeloid Sarcoma of the Breast: A Case Report With Radiological and Pathological Correlation.

Myeloid sarcoma is a solid extramedullary mass of immature myeloid cells, often in patients with myeloid leukemia. Myeloid sarcoma of the breast is extremely uncommon, and bilateral involvement is even rarer. Myeloid sarcoma of the breast can mimic primary breast cancer, lymphoma, and other neoplasms. Differentiation between myeloid sarcoma and primary breast malignancy is imperative, as management and treatment are drastically different. We present a case of myeloid sarcoma of both breasts in a 63-year-old female with relapsed acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a personal history of ovarian ca

The transcription factor LMO2 is a robust marker of vascular endothelium and vascular neoplasms and selected other entities.

The transcription factor LMO2 is involved in vascular and hematopoietic development and hematolymphoid neoplasia. We have demonstrated that LMO2 is expressed nearly ubiquitously in native and neoplastic vasculature, including lymphatics. LMO2 reactivity is otherwise virtually absent in nonhematolymphoid tissues except in breast myoepithelium, prostatic basal cells, and secretory phase endometrial glands. Vasculature is LMO2- in adult and fetal heart, brain of older adults, hepatic sinusoids, and hepatocellular carcinoma. LMO2 is uniformly expressed in benign vascular and lymphatic neoplasms an

Multicentric glioblastoma multiforme in a patient with BRCA-1 invasive breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Germline mutations in BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 significantly increase the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers, and are also associated with an increased incidence of primary cancers at other sites. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman previously treated for ductal adenocarcinoma of the breast with BRCA-1 who subsequently was diagnosed with multicentric glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in the right temporal and right occipital lobes. We briefly discuss the incidence of BRCA-1 mutations in breast cancer as well as other primary neoplasms and

Fibroadenoma Arising in Axillary Ectopic Breast Tissue. A Diagnostic Challenge.

Ectopic or accessory breast tissue may occur in primitive embryonic milk lines or locations other than the milk line. The same pathology arising in breast tissue may occur less frequently in ectopic breast tissue. Fibroadenomas rarely occur in ectopic breast tissue, with less than 50 reported cases in the English literature, despite being the most common benign breast neoplasms. Diagnosing fibroadenoma in ectopic breast tissue can be challenging due to the lack of clinical suspicion and the atypical findings in imaging studies. Treatment consists of surgical excision. In this manuscript, we pr…

Primary spindle cell sarcoma of the breast masquerading as necrotizing fasciitis.

Breast sarcomas are rare neoplasms arising from the few epithelial elements of the gland. It represents much <1% of all breast cancer. Of the heterogeneous group of sarcomas, the more common subtypes include spindle cell sarcoma. The main risk factor for the development of breast sarcomas is previous radiation therapy following breast-conservation surgery for breast cancer or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We report on an idiopathic presentation of spindle cell sarcoma in an otherwise healthy middle-aged woman. An emphasis is made on the rare occurrence of lymphatic metastasis. We discuss our recomme

Plasmacytoma in the breast with axillary lymph node involvement: a case report.

Plasmacytic tumors in the breast are extremely rare neoplasms that can mimic mammary adenocarcima. A literature review revealed approximately 43 reports worldwide of plasmacytic tumors in the breast since 1928, the majority with a synchronous diagnosis of multiple myeloma. We discuss management of a 78-year-old man with plasmacytoma in the breast who underwent a left total mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. This report characterizes the histologic and immunochemical characteristics of plasmacytoma in the breast and reviews the consensus on treatment. This could be the first recorde

Selected diagnostic problems in neoplastic dermatopathology.

CONTEXT: Selected cutaneous neoplasms share features with benign counterparts or have subtle morphologic features that could be overlooked by the pathologist. OBJECTIVE: To present clues to the diagnosis of potentially deceptive malignancies, including desmoplastic malignant melanoma, nevoid malignant melanoma, subcutaneous lymphoma, metastatic breast carcinoma, and epithelioid sarcoma. DATA SOURCES: Published literature and personal experience. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of commonly misdiagnosed cutaneous neoplasms will help the general surgical pathologist avoid these potential pitfalls in ne

Primary Mucinous Carcinoma of Skin: A Rare Cutaneous Neoplasm. Clinicopathologic Features, Differential Diagnoses, and Review of Literature.

Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin (PMCS) is a rare malignant neoplasm of sweat gland origin, with an incidence of 0.07 per million. Histologically, it may be difficult to differentiate it from metastatic mucinous carcinomas of the skin. A case of PMCS is reported here in a 59-year-old woman who presented with a lesion on the right lower eyelid. Histological examination revealed features of mucinous adenocarcinoma. The main differential diagnosis was metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma; however, the lack of colorectal and lung markers and the presence of focal in situ components were consis

Merkel cell carcinoma, melanoma, metastatic mimics of breast cancer.

Merkel cell carcinoma and melanoma can each occur primarily in breast skin, or metastasize to the breast. The breast is a rare site of metastasis of essentially any and every type of tumor, including carcinomas, sarcomas, and hematolymphoid neoplasms, and 10-30% of breast metastases may represent the initial presentation of disease. Although metastases generally recapitulate histologic features of the primary tumor, they are diagnostically challenging given their rarity and morphologic overlap with breast carcinoma, including special types of breast cancer. Histologic clues may include lack of

ACTH-secreting carcinoma of the breast.

We report a case of ACTH-secreting carcinoma of the breast. Membrane-bound secretory granules were seen within the cancer cells electron microscopically. Cytoplasmic granules reacting immunochemically to anti-ACTH antisera were seen on light microscopy. Breast cancers have been shown to secrete calcitonin, parathyroid hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin, and norepinephrine in addition to ACTH. This suggests either the presence of neuroendocrine cells in the breast as a source of such neoplasms, as in the lung, or genomic derepression during neoplastic transformation.
