Thymoma is an epithelial neoplasm of the thymus, which commonly lies in the anterior mediastinum and, therefore, an intrathoracic origin is considered to be rare. This report presents a case of giant thymoma arising in the thoracic cavity. A 61-year-old male presented with a chronic cough and breathlessness. Chest CT revealed a well enhanced giant mass approximately 18 cm in diameter in the right thoracic cavity. FDG-PET showed that the SUVmax of the tumor was 5.0 in the center and almost 2.5 in the surrounding area. A trans- bronchial needle biopsy was performed to find atypical cells. Surger

A case is described of a 54 year old woman who had acute pericarditis with large exudative effusion accompanied by severe right and left ventricular failure. The patient was finally diagnosed with carcinoid heart disease from an ovarian carcinoid teratoma. She was treated with octreotide--a somatostatin analogue--followed by radical surgical resection of the neoplasm. At one year follow up only mild carcinoid tricuspid regurgitation remained. Only 16 cases of carcinoid heart disease from an ovarian primary have been described in literature. Moreover clinically manifest acute, nonmetastatic per

The authors report 4 cases of pseudo-myasthenic syndrome followed with EMG for a period varying from a few months to 4 years. They go over the electrophysiological points which led to the diagnosis: small amplitude of the muscle potential evoked by simple shock and, in particular, the phenomenon of potentiation which may reach 2000 p. 100 during repetitive stimulation at high frequencies. Study of the behaviour of the muscle potential during ischaemia, which was carried out twice, showed an absence of fatigue of the potential which may be considered a sign of disturbance at the muscle level of

Tracheo-bronchial glomus tumours are rare, usually benign tumours of modified smooth muscle cells. They commonly present as non-specific respiratory symptoms of cough, dyspnoea or haemoptysis. Generally, glomus tumours are benign, but extension beyond the bronchial wall into surrounding soft tissues has been described. Surgical treatment remains the treatment of choice for tracheo-bronchial glomus tumours. Endobronchial therapy should be considered in patients unfit for surgical excision. We describe a patient with a glomus tumour of the left main bronchus, who presented with mediastinal shift

Mycobacterium tuberculosis produces two distinct types of disease: primary and post primary tuberculosis. We recently reported that post primary tuberculosis begins in immunocompetent adults as an endogenous lipid pneumonia that abruptly undergoes necrosis to produce cavities. Obstruction of bronchi by endobronchial tuberculosis is a consistent finding in developing post primary tuberculosis. This paper reports a case of obstructive pneumonia caused by cancer that underwent rapid necrosis to produce a cavity that was similar to those produce by tuberculosis. Analysis of this case with the rele

OBJECTIVE: It is important to distinguish endobronchial metastases (EBM) from both primary lung cancers and benign lesions, as treatment will differ. The clinicopathological characteristics of EBM cases were documented to see whether any distinguishing features exist.
METHODOLOGY: Histological cases diagnosed as EBM in the pathology laboratory of a tertiary hospital were re-evaluated. Symptoms, primary tumour sites, recurrence interval, radiological and bronchoscopic features, and histopathological properties were assessed.
RESULTS: There were 18 cases (eight female, 10 male) with EBM. All w

Pediatric tracheobronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), also called pulmonary MEC, is a rare malignant primary lung neoplasm that is typically found in the large airways. Patients may present with symptoms such as cough, pneumonia, fever, hemoptysis, dyspnea, wheezing, chest pain, weight loss, and fatigue. These nonspecific symptoms (or lack of symptoms in some cases) often result in a delayed diagnosis. Chest CT typically demonstrates findings consistent with bronchial obstruction and diagnosis is made via histopathology. Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment and children often h

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare neoplasm in children. Nonspecific symptoms such as hemoptysis may delay diagnosis because they are confused with other respiratory diseases.
CLINICAL CASE: A 9-year-old male patient presented recurrent episodes of cough and hemoptysis. The patient had two similar episodes associated with wheezing in previous months and was treated as an asthma attack. Radiological studies and bronchoscopy reported a lung mass obstructing the left main bronchus, causing atelectasis and involvement of the left lung. Transthoracic biopsy was positive for a

We present an incidentally discovered, unusual case of pulmonary bronchial mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma associated with massive crystal storing histiocytosis in a 69-year-old woman. The neoplastic process was masked by large numbers of epithelioid and spindled histiocytes containing crystalline material. Histochemical stains showed intracytoplasmic crystals and immunoperoxidase staining confirmed the histiocytic nature of the swollen cells. Electron microscopy demonstrated the characteristic appearance of immunoglobulin crystals. Lymphoepithelial lesions were identified on immuno

If clinical course changed rapidly and the patient had fever, cough and dyspnea, then, opportunistic infection should be considered at first. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), brushing and trans- bronchial biopsy (TBLB) will give most of informations. If the patient had hypoxemia, high, flow O 2 (even pu

A 13-year-old girl was referred to our hospital for chest pain and atelectasis of left upper lobe on chest X-ray film. Bronchoscopy revealed an endobronchial tumor obstructing left main bronchus. Left upper lobectomy with bronchoplasty was performed. The tumor was a polyp 34 x 17 x 17 mm in size and obstructed left main bronchus. Histologically the tumor was a low-grade malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma with malignant pleural effusin. The patient has been well and free of recurrence for 8 years postoperatively.

The current WHO classification of lung tumors recognizes bronchial typical carcinoid as low-grade neuroendocrine tumors. These tumors grow slowly but can metastasize to regional nodes (4 to 20%) and more rarely to extrathoracic sites. Symptoms are usually related to local compression and obstruction of the bronchial tree. Paraneoplastic syndrome can be present (carcinoid syndrome, Cushing's syndrome, acromegaly). Preoperative diagnosis is usually obtained with bronchoscopic biopsy. Computed tomography and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy are useful in the preoperative staging. Only selected

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 42-year-old woman, a smoker for many years, had suffered from dry cough for some time. She was admitted because of haemoptyses, the first one month previously. Physical examination was unremarkable.
INVESTIGATIONS: Chest radiography in two planes showed no abnormality. Computed tomography revealed a space-occupying lesion adjacent to the right main bronchus, strongly suspicious of a central bronchial carcinoma. Bronchoscopy showed a smoothly circumscribed tumour in the upper lobe bronchus which almost occluded its lumen. Multiple biopsies failed to establish t

Bronchial carcinoids develop metastases approximately in 22 per cent of cases. Metastases can develop in all anatomical forms of the growth. Histologically, metastasizing tumors may be of a different structure: a) typical histoarchitectonics and cytology; b) atypical histoarchitectonics but without cell atypism; c) typical histoarchitectonics associated with cytologic atypism; d) histoarchitectonic atypism associated with cytologic atypism. There is no dependence between an anatomical form of the growth and histological structure. But secondary changes in the lung are directly dependent on the

A 65-year-old man, diagnosed with bronchus cancer metastasized to the brain and lymph nodes, was seen at the emergency department. He complained of 'an airy feeling' within the left side of his thorax. Imaging revealed a pneumopericardium, probably caused by a fistula between the primary tumour and the pericardium.
