Carrier and adjuvant properties of liposome-borne tumor-specific antigens.

The purpose of this study was to examine (1) the association of tumor extract proteins with phospholipid vesicles of varying physiochemical properties, and (2) the adjuvant and carrier properties of liposome-borne tumor antigens in the in vivo induction of an antitumor immune response. Cell surface antigens of the 3-methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma of C3H/HeJ mice, MCA-F, were extracted using 2.5% 1-butanol. Crude and electrofocused antigen preparations capable of eliciting a protective antitumor immune response were used to prepare liposome vaccines. The incorporation of extract protei

Sustainable Synthesis of Trimethylolpropane, a Biobased Polyol from Renewable Resources by an Integrated Process of Biotechnology and Chemical Reactions.

Trimethylolpropane (TMP) is an important industrial chemical used to produce various value-added chemicals and polymers. In this study, both biobased butyraldehyde and formaldehyde were produced by the incomplete oxidation of bio-1-butanol and biomethanol, respectively, and were then used to produce a biobased TMP. High selective incomplete oxidation of primary alcohol to aldehyde is a challenging process minimizing the corresponding carboxylic acid, a complete oxidation product. Guconobactor oxidans DSM 2343 was found to have high activity and selectivity for the oxidation of butanol to butyr

Thioflavin-T: A Quantum Yield-Based Molecular Viscometer for Glycerol-Monohydroxy Alcohol Mixtures.

Molecular rotor dye thioflavin T (ThT) is almost nonfluorescent in low-viscosity solvents but highly fluorescent when bound to amyloid fibrils. This unique property arises from the rotation of the dimethylaniline moiety relative to the benzothiazole moiety in the excited state, which drives the dye from an emissive locally excited state to a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer state. This process is viscosity-controlled, and therefore, we can use the quantum yield of ThT to assess the viscosity of the environment. In this study, we have investigated the quantum yield of ThT (φThT) in variou

Effect of hypnotics on mice genetically selected for sensitivity to ethanol.

It was previously shown that the rate of disappearance of blood ethanol was identical for two lines of mice selectively bred for differences in sleep-time after ethanol administration. The ED50 values for the loss of righting response with ethanol were significantly different at 3.64 g per kg for the SS line and 1.65 g per kg for the LS line. In the present study the mean sleep time is 367 sec for SS mice and 9342 sec for LS mice. The ED50 values remain essentially the same as previously reported. Unchanged LD50 values for ethanol, however, are not different at 4.8 g per kg for the SS and 4.5

Alcohol-induced biphasic inhibition of myosin subfragment 1 K-EDTA-ATPase.

Butanol-induced inhibition of K-EDTA-ATPase of myosin subfragment 1 proceeded by biphasic kinetics, consisting of rapid and slow inactivations. The extent of the rapid inactivation, which was estimated by extrapolating the process of slow inactivation to zero time of the incubation period, was saturated with butanol concentration. Recovery of activity by dilution in the rapid phase indicates that the rapid process is reversible. The slow inactivation was concomitant with a partial denaturation of the 50 kDa domain of S1, which was detected by limited tryptic digestion. Other alcohols (methanol

Temporary and selective anosmia in tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) caused by chemical treatment of the olfactory epithelium.

Tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) were trained to respond to two dissimilar odorants (i.e., cyclohexanone, dimethyl disulfide) but not to a third odorant (n-butanol). When the training criterion was met, the animals were anesthetized and given nasal lavages of saline or odorants in saline. Lavage with cyclohexanone decreased responding to cyclohexanone but not dimethyl disulfide, and vice-versa, in later behavioral tests. Likewise, ethyl acetoacetate lavage produced selective response decrements to cyclohexanone. Lavage with n-butanol had no effect on responding to presentations of either

Antibacterial and antifungal activities of Breynia cernua.

The Breynia cernua leaves, stem and root barks and heart-woods extracted with petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol and methanol gave fractions with varied level of antimicrobial activity. The best activity was exhibited by the methanol extract of the root bark followed by its butanol fraction. These were the only fractions exhibiting a good level of antifungal activity as compared to the standard. The dichloromethane fraction of the stem bark also demonstrated good activity.

Alcohols as reactive species modulators: Rethinking quenching in UV/chlorine process.

Alcohols are widely used as quenchers in UV/chlorine process currently to evaluate the roles of radicals, principally relying on the premise that they selectively react with target radicals (e.g., HO• and Cl•) without affecting other reactions. However, this study revealed several unrecognized alcohol-dependent phenomena in this system that clearly challenge this principle. Specifically, tert‑butanol inhibited chlorine decay (kobs = 0.14 min-1), whereas methanol, ethanol, and isobutanol accelerated it by 1.2-2.3 folds (kobs = 0.23-0.45 min-1). Mechanistic analysis indicated that alcohols quenc

Effects of constituents of Amomum xanthioides on gastritis in rats and on growth of gastric cancer cells.

In this study we investigated the effects of constituents of Amomum xanthioides (AX) on gastritis in rats and on the growth of human gastric cancer cells. The ethanol extract of Amomum xanthioides significantly inhibited HCl ethanol-induced gastric lesions and the growth of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylon). The ethanol extract of AX was further fractionated with hexane, chloroform, butanol and H20. Among these fractions, oral treatment with the butanol fraction at a dose of 350 mg/kg was the most effective at preventing HCl* ethanol-induced gastric lesions. In pylorus ligated rats, the butanol f

Studies on the effect of alcohols on the chiral discrimination mechanisms of amylose stationary phase on the enantioseparation of nebivolol by HPLC.

The chiral recognition mechanism of amylose CSPs has been described by achieving the enantiomeric resolution of (+/-)-nebivolol on Chiralpak AD and Chiralpak AD-RH columns with methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol as mobile phases at different flow rates. The energies of interactions of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and 1-butanol with both phases were calculated. The (+)-RRRS enantiomer eluted first when using methanol, ethanol and 1-propanol, while the elution order was reversed when using 2-propanol and 1-butanol as the mobile phases. It has been concluded that th

Bioassay-guided isolation of anti-inflammatory C-glucosylflavones from Passiflora edulis.

Passiflora edulis, commonly known as "maracujá", is widely cultivated in Brazil for the industrial production of juice. The species of Passiflora are popularly used as a sedative or tranquillizer, and also against intermittent fever and skin inflammation. In this study we evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of four sub-fractions and three isolated compounds from the butanolic fraction of P. edulis var. flavicarpa leaves, using the mouse model of pleurisy induced by carrageenan. The butanolic fraction obtained from an aqueous extract of P. edulis (50 and 100 mg/kg, I. P.) showed anti-infla

Antioxidant or pro-oxidant and glutathione transferase P1-1 inhibiting activities for Tamarindus indica seeds and their cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cancer cell line.

BACKGROUND: The multidrug resistance (MDR) of cancer cells is a major obstacle to cancer treatment. Glutathione S-transferase Pi (GSTP1-1) catalyzes the conjugation of glutathione with anticancer drugs and therefore reduces their efficacy. Phenolic compounds have the potential to inhibit GST P1-1 activity, which is a promising goal to overcome MDR and increase the efficacy of chemotherapy. RESULTS: Three fractions (dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol) were prepared from Tamarindus indica seeds to determine their phenolic and flavonoid properties as well as their antioxidant/pro-oxid

Protein Scaffold-Driven Enzyme Colocalization Combined with Glucose Derepression in Candida tropicalis Enables High-Level 1,2,4-Butanetriol Production.

1,2,4-Butanetriol is a crucial fine chemical intermediate for energetic materials, high-value-added chemicals, and pharmaceuticals; however, its microbial biosynthesis pathway is often hindered by intermediate accumulation and imbalanced metabolic flux. To overcome these challenges, Candida tropicalis was employed as the chassis, and a synergistic strategy integrating protein scaffold-driven enzyme colocalization with key enzyme engineering was developed to optimize the pathway from xylose. Stage-specific repression of xylose dehydrogenase (XylB) confirmed the growth inhibition caused by xylon
