Renal involvement in sarcoidosis is rare and more often related to calcium metabolism disorders or granulomatous interstitial nephritis, glomerulonephritis is exceptional. The two cases of renal failure reported in this article illustrate the gravity of this complication, whose treatment remains difficult.

Metabolic bone disorders are very common in the general population and untreated, they can cause a variety of neurologic symptoms. These diseases include osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency, Paget's disease, and alterations in calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium metabolism. Diagnosis is made through analysis of metabolic bone blood chemistries as well as radiologic studies such as dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, bone scans, and X-rays. Treatment options have advanced significantly in the past decade for osteoporosis and Paget's disease and mainly include antiresorptive therapy. New

Recommendations for calcium intakes during pregnancy and lactation differ around the world, reflecting the inadequacy of knowledge about calcium requirements in human reproduction. In theory, insufficient calcium supply during pregnancy and lactation could result in maternal bone loss, reduced breast-milk calcium secretion or impaired infant bone development. However, although calcium intakes vary widely, no specific problems associated with dietary calcium deficiency have been identified. Alterations in absorption, metabolism, and excretion may conserve calcium when requirements increase. Bon

Idiopathic hypercalciuria is a heterogeneous generalized disorder caused by various defects in calcium transport and increased urinary calcium excretion. The main etiopathogenetic factors are violations of vitamin D metabolism, changes in the sensitivity of calcitriol receptors and violations of the processes of calcium reabsorption in the proximal tubules and in the ascending knee of the Henle loop. This article presents a clinical observation of patient with idiopathic hypercalciuria, initially high levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the absence of hyperparathyroidism. Therapy with thiaz

Electrolyte, acid-base, and mineral metabolism disorders are among the most common and clinically significant problems experienced in internal medicine patients. Their development reflects disturbances in regulated homeostatic mechanisms involving the kidneys, bones, endocrine systems, and cellular ion transport. Disorders such as hyponatremia, hypernatremia, hypokalemia, hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, and abnormalities of calcium and phosphorus metabolism are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality when not promptly recognized and appropriately treated. Premenstrual syndrome afflicts millions of premenopausal women and has been described as one of the most common disorders in women. Research over the past few years suggests that a variety of nutrients may have an important role in the phase related mood and behavioral disturbances of the premenstrual syndrome. There is scientific evidence, at least for a few of these micronutrients, specifically calcium and vitamin D, supporting cyclic fluctuations during the menstrual cycle that may help explain some features of PMS. Ovarian hormones influence calcium, magnesium and vitamin D metabolism. Est

Disorders of the phosphocalcic metabolism are frequent in dialysis patients. Such disorders are difficult to treat and have negative impact on bone health, but also on cardiovascular mortality. Hyperphosphoremia is a strong predictor of cardiovascular mortality. New phosphate binders are now available in Belgium. A new molecule acting on the calcium receptor of the parathyroid glands is able to control secondary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism in dialysis patients. These new therapies, specific for dialysis patients, will be reviewed in this article.

Vascular calcifications are more frequent in dialysis patients than in the general population or in patients with cardiovascular disease and normal renal function. The reasons for this high incidence are multiple. They include traditional factors such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, and specific factors such as sodium overload, hyperomocysteinaemia, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress as well as disturbance of mineral metabolism. Specifically, hyperphosphataemia and the elevated calcium (Ca) x phosphate product have been associated with an increased risk for development of vascula

BACKGROUND: Lipid metabolism is a complex process that includes lipid uptake, transport, synthesis, and degradation. Trace elements are vital in maintaining normal lipid metabolism in the human body. This study explores the relationship between serum trace elements and lipid metabolism.
METHODS: In this study, we reviewed articles on the relationship between alterations in somatic levels of zinc, iron, calcium, copper, chrome, manganese, selenium, and lipid metabolism. In this systematic review and mate-analysis, databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastru

Microorganisms living on the surface and inside the human body play an important role in the physiological activities of the human body. The largest microecosystem in the human body is the gut microbiome. Calcium disorders are found in many diseases. For example, patients with chronic renal insufficiency present with secondary hyperparathyroidism, which is caused by a calcium imbalance in the body. In addition, calcium dysregulation may affect lipid metabolism in the liver through the calmodulator pathway, leading to cirrhosis, etc. Currently, a considerable number of probiotics have been prov

Eight autistic patients with steatorrhoea, hypocalciuria, and alleged behavioural improvements on gluten restriction, were fed ordinary diets plus 20 g gluten/day for 4 weeks. None of the patients had any significant change in body-weight or bowel habit as a result of gluten challenge, nor were any histological abnormalities detected on jejunal biopsy. The data suggest that the steatorrhoea and hypocalciuria seen in some autistic subjects cannot be accounted for by the presence of coeliac disease. Furthermore, these patients should not be confined to gluten-free diets, unless rigorous behaviou

Calcium ions (Ca2+) serve as universal second messengers regulating endocrine, neuronal, and metabolic processes. In children and adolescents, tight calcium signaling control is crucial for growth, hormone homeostasis, neuromuscular function, and neurodevelopment. Disruptions in Ca2+-dependent pathways-whether genetic, metabolic, or acquired-underlie a spectrum of pediatric endocrine diseases often presenting with neurological manifestations This review summarizes calcium's roles in hormone secretion, parathyroid and vitamin D metabolism, and neuronal excitability, and discusses monogenic and

Basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals include partially carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite, octacalcium phosphate, and tricalcium phosphate. They may form deposits, which are frequently asymptomatic but may give rise to a number of clinical syndromes including calcific periarthritis, Milwaukee shoulder syndrome, and osteoarthritis, in and around joints. Recent data suggest that magnesium whitlockite, another form of BCP, may play a pathologic role in arthritis. Data from the past year have provided further understanding of the mechanisms by which BCP crystals induce inflammation and degener

Loss of bone mineral content has been recognized as one of the chronic complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus, although its mechanism is not fully documented. A negative calcium balance due to both enhanced urinary calcium excretion and decreased intestinal calcium absorption has been occurred because of alteration of vitamin D metabolism and/or decreased parathyroid function. From the view point of bone cell metabolism, osteoblastic bone formation is suppressed by alternation of vitamin D metabolism, hypoparathyroidism, chronic hyperglycemia and insufficient insulin action. On the other ha

Calcinosis cutis is characterized by the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The syndrome is separated into five subtypes: dystrophic calcification, metastatic calcification, idiopathic calcification, iatrogenic calcification, and calciphylaxis. Dystrophic calcification appears as a result of local tissue damage with normal calcium and phosphate levels in serum. Metastatic calcification is characterized by an abnormal calcium and/or phosphate metabolism, leading to the precipitation of calcium in cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue. Idiopathic calcification
