[Campylobacter fetus endocarditis: a case report].

Campylobacter are known to be a cause of enteritidic infections but Campylobacter fetus is more often a cause of systemic infections, mainly in fragilized patients. We report a C. fetus endocarditis. The prognosis seemstobe improved by a prolonged betalactam antibiotic treatment.

Campylobacter polysaccharide capsules: virulence and vaccines.

Campylobacter jejuni remains a major cause of bacterial diarrhea worldwide and is associated with numerous sequelae, including Guillain Barré Syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, reactive arthritis, and irritable bowel syndrome. C. jejuni is unusual for an intestinal pathogen in its ability to coat its surface with a polysaccharide capsule (CPS). These capsular polysaccharides vary in sugar composition and linkage, especially those involving heptoses of unusual configuration and O-methyl phosphoramidate linkages. This structural diversity is consistent with CPS being the major serodeterminant…

Bloodstream infection caused by Campylobacter lari.

We describe a case of bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by Campylobacter lari in a 58-year-old man diagnosed with lumbar pyogenic spondylitis. Anaerobic blood cultures, taken on the day of admission and on hospital day 4, were positive after 30 h of incubation, although no bacteria were detected by Gram staining. After subculture on 5 % sheep blood agar for 2 days at 35 °C in a 5 % CO2 environment, capnophilic, curved, gram-negative bacteria were recovered. The bacteria were identified as C. lari using a combination of phenotypic identification methods and partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Th…

Purulent pleurisy caused by Campylobacter lari.

An 80-year-old debilitated patient developed purulent pleurisy caused by a Campylobacter lari isolate. The patient underwent surgical drainage and received antibiotic therapy with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and ofloxacin. Antibiotic susceptibility data showed that the isolate was fully sensitive to clarithromycin, tetracycline, aminoglycosides. and ciprofloxacin. Imipenem and amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid were the most active beta-lactam agents.

Bovine diarrhea associated with Campylobacter hyointestinalis.

An enteric disease affected 16 ruminating calves. The disease was characterized by a nonspecific, mild to severe diarrhea and wasting. Two calves died during the course of disease. C. hyointestinalis was isolated from 12 to 14 calves. The antibody titers of affected calves to C. hyointestinalis varied from 1:20 to 1:160. The disease was successfully treated with chloramphenicol.

Granulomatous gastritis associated with Campylobacter pylori.

Three cases of granulomatous inflammation in gastric biopsies showing Campylobacter pylori infestation are described. This type of reaction to Campylobacter pylori has not previously been described, and occurred in 1.1% of gastric biopsies containing Campylobacter-like organisms (CLO), in this series of all gastric biopsies submitted for histological examination during one year. Two other cases each showed a mucosal granuloma: one was a patient with Crohn's disease and the other had foreign body giant cells in a biopsy of the edge of a healing gastric ulcer. Each of our three CLO-positive case…

[Campylobacter pylori colonization and gastroduodenal pathology].

355 patients suffering from dyspepsia with an endoscopic pathological picture were examined. Campylobacter pylori was sought histologically and by culture. Histological and cultural results were compared. There were no bacteria on the gastric mucosa of 46 patients who had no histopathological evidence of lesions. Cultural studies were performed in 40 cases on endoscopic instruments used during the examination, before and after standard sterilization. Campylobacter pylori was found on the gastric mucosa of 224 patients (63.09%); 91.93% with duodenal ulcer; 71.87% with gastric ulcer; 54.23% with…

[Campylobacter pylori, gastritis and peptic ulcer].

In the course of routine gastroduodenoscopic examination of 218 patients bioptic mucosal specimens were examined bacteriologically for the presence of Campylobacter (C.) pylori. The organism was isolated from 52 out of 53 patients (98%) with duodenal ulcer, 7 out of 9 with gastric ulcer (78%), 24 out of 31 with mucosal erosions (77%), 10 out of 10 with duodenitis (100%), 16 out of 16 with chronic active gastritis (100%) and from 40 out of 73 patients (55%) with inactive chronic gastritis. By contrast, all specimens from 26 patients with endoscopically and histologically normal mucosa were nega…

Campylobacter infection masquerading as ulcerative colitis.

A 24-year-old woman noted erythematous tender nodules on her extremities and temporal areas while being treated for Campylobacter-positive colitis. Histologic examination showed groups of inflammatory cells in the subcutaneous tissue and dermis around pilosebaceous follicles and sweat glands. The diagnosis of nonspecific, chronic dermatitis and panniculitis was made. The cutaneous lesions improved with the administration of tetracycline, Azulfidine, and adrenocorticotropic hormone, after which a negative culture for Campylobacter was obtained. Campylobacter colitis may stimulate ulcerative col…

Erythromycin-resistant Campylobacter infections in Thailand.

Erythromycin therapy was compared with no treatment in a prospective trial of acute diarrheal disease among 100 infants in an orphanage in Bangkok. Within 24 h of the onset of diarrhea, 50 children received erythromycin ethylsuccinate (40 mg/kg per day) in four divided doses for 5 days. Campylobacter jejuni isolated from 31, Campylobacter coli isolated from 21, and Shigella spp. isolated from 21 of 100 children were the most commonly recognized pathogens; use of a sensitive, nonselective method substantially increased Campylobacter isolation. Treatment with erythromycin had no effect on the du…

Campylobacter pyloridis, gastritis, and peptic ulceration.

Campylobacter pyloridis is a spiral bacterium which was seen by histopathologists several years before it was cultured in 1982 in Perth, Western Australia. It has unique cellular fatty acids, predominantly tetradecanoic acid and cis-11, 12 methylene octadecanoic acid. It also has a unique ultrastructure which is different from that of other campylobacters. C pyloridis possesses a powerful urease enzyme and produces large amounts of extracellular catalase. Both these features may be important virulence factors, allowing it to occupy a protected niche in the stomach below the mucus layer but abo…

Fatalities associated with Campylobacter jejuni infections.

Although Campylobacter jejuni is now recognized as a common cause of gastroenteritis, fatalities associated with this infection in the United States have not been previously reported. Two fatalities associated with C jejuni infections occurred over a two-year period in the Denver metropolitan area. The first case was in a previously healthy 26-year-old woman who died following a two-day diarrheal illness. The second case was in a 69-year-old diabetic woman who died 19 hours after developing a gastrointestinal tract illness one day following hospital discharge for an orthopedic procedure. Both …
