Psychosocial functioning in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and externalizing behavior problems.

PURPOSE: This study examines psychosocial functioning in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and/or externalizing behavior problems (EBPs) as compared to children with neither condition. METHODS: The longitudinal sample, drawn from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, included children who were 6 to 9 years old in Cycle 1 who were followed-up biennially in Cycles 2 and 3 (N = 3476). The associations between NDDs and/or EBPs, child and family socio-demographic characteristics and parenting behaviors (consistency and ineffective parenting), were examine

Lobar Brain Volume Associations With Brain-Age Gap in Canadian Special Operations Forces Breachers.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether military breachers show significant positive raw brain-age gap and to identify which intracranial-volume (ICV)-normalized lobar volumes best predict bias-corrected brain-age gap (BAGc). SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Eighty-five male (mean age 30.1 ± 4.5 years) Canadian Special Operations Forces (CANSOF) active breachers. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. MAIN MEASURES: T1-weighted MRI was processed using the Brain Structure Ages (BSA) pipeline to derive global brain age and lobar volumes. Raw brain-age gap was calculated as estimated age minus chronological age. BAGc was

Factors associated with change in moderate or severe symptoms of anxiety and depression in community-living adults and older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: Few are the longitudinal studies on the changes in moderate or severe symptoms of anxiety or depression (MSS-ANXDEP) from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. The aim was to study the change in MSS-ANXDEP and associated sociodemographic, economic, psychosocial, health behaviour and lifestyle, and clinical factors. METHODS: The current sample includes 59,997 adults aged ≥ 35 years participating in the 2018 and 2020 health surveys of the 5 established cohorts of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow's Health (CanPath). MSS-ANXDEP was based on a cutoff score ≥ 10 on the

Parental characteristics associated with childcare use during the first 4 years of life: results from a representative cohort of Québec families.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown that children growing up in socio-economically disadvantaged families have poorer cognitive scores than children growing up in more advantaged families, and that high-quality childcare services can reduce this gap. This effect may be attenuated, however, if disadvantaged families are less likely than better-off families to use childcare and if they use childcare of lower quality. The aim of this study was to identify factors related to parental decisions to use formal and informal childcare. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child

Brain Structure Among Middle-aged and Older Adults With Long-standing Type 1 Diabetes in the DCCT/EDIC Study.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are living to ages when neuropathological changes are increasingly evident. We hypothesized that middle-aged and older adults with long-standing T1DM will show abnormal brain structure in comparison with control subjects without diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: MRI was used to compare brain structure among 416 T1DM participants in the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study with that of 99 demographically similar control subjects without diabetes at 26 U.S. and Canadian sites. Assessments included

Association between change in BMD and fragility fracture in women and men.

Our objective was to estimate the relationship between longitudinal change in BMD and fragility fractures. We studied 3635 women and 1417 men 50-85 yr of age in the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study who had at least two BMD measurements (lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip, and trochanter) within the first 5 yr of the study and fragility fractures (any, main, forearm/wrist, ribs, hip) within the first 7 yr. Multiple logistic regression was used to model the relationship between baseline BMD, BMD change, and fragility fractures. We found that, among nonusers of antiresorptives, independ

Immunological and virological response to initial antiretroviral therapy among older people living with HIV in the Canadian Observational Cohort (CANOC).

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the adequacy of immunological recovery and virological suppression in response to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the growing population of older people living with HIV (PLWH), as treatment regimens become more effective and tolerable. METHODS: An interprovincial Canadian cohort of treatment-naïve PLWH who initiated ART after 1 January 2000 was used and age assessed in decades. Longitudinal absolute CD4 count response to treatment was modelled using generalized estimating equations. Cumulative incidence functions and proportional hazards models

Changes in Symptoms of Cannabis Use Disorder of Ontario Youth Across the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use increased among youth during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a lack of research examining whether there were lasting changes in cannabis use and, in particular, problematic cannabis use, across the pandemic. This is particularly important to examine among young adults because problematic cannabis use is associated with a greater likelihood of impaired neurodevelopment and adverse health outcomes. METHODS: The study was a longitudinal cohort survey of Canadian youth (n = 1579; 55% female; mean age 22 years) aged 16 to 30 residing in Ontario who reported cannab

Longitudinal evaluation of glomerular filtration rate across adolescence and early adulthood in youth with type 1 diabetes: associations with clinical and social risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The continuous evaluation of GFR among youth with T1D has traditionally been difficult during the transition to adult care given distinct pediatric & adult estimated GFR (eGFR) formulas recommended by clinical practice guidelines. We aimed to assess longitudinal trends in kidney function in type 1 diabetes from adolescence to early adulthood using updated eGFR formulae and to examine associations between eGFR and clinical as well as social factors over time in this population. METHODS: Clinical factors including age, sex, diabetes duration, insulin therapy, BMI and HbA1c in additi

Recent sex work and associations with psychosocial outcomes among women living with HIV: findings from a longitudinal Canadian cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Sex workers are disproportionately impacted by the HIV pandemic across global contexts, in part due to social and structural contexts of stigma and criminalization. Among women living with HIV, there is a dearth of longitudinal information regarding dynamics of sex work engagement and associated social and health outcomes. In order to better understand the social contexts and health needs of sex working women living with HIV, this study aimed to understand recent sex work prevalence and its longitudinal associations with stigma, psychosocial and clinical HIV outcomes among women

Longitudinal Prevalence of Financial Worry in a Cohort of Patients with Advanced Colorectal Cancer: A Secondary Observational Cohort Study.

IntroductionFinancial hardship during cancer treatment is common in privatised healthcare systems and has been extensively studied in cancer survivorship groups. The experience of financial concerns by people living with advanced, incurable cancer has been less frequently explored. This paper sought to describe the proportion of patients experiencing financial worry longitudinally, in a cohort with advanced colorectal cancer, in a publicly funded healthcare system.MethodsThis secondary analysis of a prospective, observational cohort study 'Palliative Care Early and Systematic (PaCES)' project,

Ethnicity Associations With Food Sensitization Are Mediated by Gut Microbiota Development in the First Year of Life.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing evidence supports the role of early-life gut microbiota in developing atopic diseases, but ecological changes to gut microbiota during infancy in relation to food sensitization remain unclear. We aimed to characterize and associate these changes with the development of food sensitization in children. METHODS: In this observational study, using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, we characterized the composition of 2844 fecal microbiota in 1422 Canadian full-term infants. Atopic sensitization outcomes were measured by skin prick tests at age 1 year and 3 years. The as

Exploring the mediating roles of physical activity and television time on the relationship between the neighbourhood environment and childhood obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the mechanisms by which neighbourhood environments influence childhood obesity is needed to facilitate the development of prevention strategies. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to identify the distinct types of neighbourhoods in which Canadian children reside and examine the extent to which physical activity and sedentary behaviour mediate the relationship between neighbourhood type and childhood obesity. METHODS: Baseline data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (1994/1995) were used for this study. Latent class analysis was us

Dimensions of care for dementia sufferers in long-term care institutions: are they related to outcomes?

OBJECTIVES: This study empirically examined whether dimensions of care cluster in special care units (SCUs) compared with non-SCUs. The relationship between SCU status plus separate measures of the dimensions of care and outcomes for dementia sufferers was then investigated. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Intermediate Care Facility Project. The sample (N = 510) included residents with dementia, aged 65 and older, in intermediate care facilities throughout the province of British Columbia. Canada. Longitudinal data included 6 outcomes: cognitive function, behavioral problems of agitation an

Effectiveness of prosthetic rehabilitation of children with limb deficiencies present at birth.

This study was performed to investigate the efficacy of prosthetic rehabilitation in children with congenital malformations, also to determine whether there were any factors related to family history and pregnancy which could have affected the formation of such deficiencies. Twenty-five (25) limb deficient children were provided with prostheses and received rehabilitation. A detailed family and pregnancy history was researched through the records. The ability of performing activities of daily living was scored on a four point scale. Thirteen (13) lower and 12 upper limb deficient children with

A randomized controlled trial of psychoeducation or cognitive-behavioral therapy in bipolar disorder: a Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety treatments (CANMAT) study [CME].

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder is insufficiently controlled by medication, so several adjunctive psychosocial interventions have been tested. Few studies have compared these psychosocial treatments, all of which are lengthy, expensive, and difficult to disseminate. We compared the relative effectiveness of a brief psychoeducation group intervention to a more comprehensive and longer individual cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention, measuring longitudinal outcome in mood burden in bipolar disorder. METHOD: This single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted between June 2002 and Septe

EXploring Patterns of Use and Effects of Adult Day Programs to Improve Trajectories of Continuing Care (EXPEDITE): Protocol for a Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Adult day programs provide critical supports to older adults and their family or friend caregivers. High-quality care in the community for as long as possible and minimizing facility-based continuing care are key priorities of older adults, their caregivers, and health care systems. While most older adults in need of care live in the community, about 10% of newly admitted care home residents have relatively low care needs that could be met in the community with the right supports. However, research on the effects of day programs is inconsistent. The methodological quality of studie
