Bone cancer pain model in mice: evaluation of pain behavior, bone destruction and morphine sensitivity.

The primary aim of the study was to correlate pain development during bone cancer growth with objectively obtained tumor-induced changes in bone morphology. Additionally morphine sensitivity of this bone pain was evaluated. Mice were injected into the femur with osteolytic NCTC2472 cells, and behaviorally followed during a 3-week period. During the observation period increasing pain behavior was observed in tumor-bearing animals. Tumor mice exhibited spontaneous and movement-evoked lifting, the latter evoked through non-noxious palpation of the tumor. Limb use during forced ambulation on a rot

Intrathecal morphine delivery at prepontine cistern to control refractory cancer-related pain: a case report of extensive metastatic and refractory cancer pain.

BACKGROUND: Extensive metastatic and refractory cancer pain is common, and exhibits a dissatisfactory response to the conventional intrathecal infusion of opioid analgesics. CASE PRESENTATION: The present study reports a case of an extensive metastatic esophageal cancer patient with severe intractable pain, who underwent translumbar subarachnoid puncture with intrathecal catheterization to the prepontine cistern. After continuous infusion of low-dose morphine, the pain was well-controlled with a decrease in the numeric rating scale (NRS) of pain score from 9 to 0, and the few adverse reaction

Non-cancer pain clinic in three English prisons: understanding prisoner needs and prescribing practice in relation to chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP).

PURPOSE: Prisoner access to opiate-based analgesics and gabapentinoids is a concern to prisons through illicit trading. The purpose of this paper is to describe patient needs following introduction of nine pilot chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) clinics for chronic pain in three prisons (two male and one female) in the South of England. The study evaluated the effectiveness of this model and assessed the wider practical implementation issues. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Clinical notes were reviewed for 63 consultations, anonymised and recorded for secondary analysis. FINDINGS: Alongside CNCP,

The Abbey Pain Scale: not sufficiently valid or reliable for assessing pain in patients with advanced cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced cancer can be unable to verbalize their pain. The Abbey Pain Scale (APS), an observational tool, is used to assess pain in this setting, but has never been psychometrically tested for people with cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the validity, reliability, and the responsiveness of the APS to opioids for patients with advanced cancer in a palliative oncology care setting. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with advanced cancer and poor performance status, drowsiness, unconsciousness, or delirium, were assessed for pain using a Swedish translation of th

Validation of the Korean version of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale in patients with chronic non-cancer pain.

PURPOSE: Pain catastrophizing often has been measured using the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS). Studies of the PCS nearly consistently support its three-factor structure (i.e., helplessness, magnification, and rumination) and satisfactory psychometric properties across different countries and languages. This study aimed to assess the generalizability of the three-factor structure of the PCS to Korean patients with chronic non-cancer pain and to investigate reliability, measurement error, and construct validity of a Korean version of the PCS (K-PCS). METHODS: A total of 182 patients with chr

Integrated models of palliative medicine and pain management for the treatment of cancer-related pain: a review.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Cancer-related pain remains one of the most common and distressing symptoms experienced by people with cancer. Increasing cancer prevalence, longer survival, and greater symptom complexity have highlighted the limitations of traditional, fragmented approaches to cancer pain management. This review examines contemporary models of integrated palliative medicine and pain management services, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary care pathways and interventional pain techniques. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature supports the earlier integration of palliative medici

Cancer-Induced Neuropathic Pain: Clinical Features and Treatment Options.

Cancer-induced neuropathic pain results from tumor or treatment-induced damage to the somatosensory system. Manifesting as burning, shooting, or electric-like sensations, it is challenging to control and can significantly reduce the quality of life. Effective management requires a multimodal approach, using adjuvant analgesics such as anticonvulsants or antidepressants alongside standard therapies. This condition often persists after cancer treatment and necessitates ongoing assessment to determine therapeutic response and adjust interventions for optimal patient comfort and function.

Role of TRP Channels in Cancer-Induced Bone Pain.

The burden of cancer is growing in almost every country. Bone metastases significantly affect the prognosis and lead to an increase in mortality and morbidity. The management of cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP) still shows various unmet needs. Opioid use is burdened by a number of possible side effects. Moreover, recent progresses in cancer treatment significantly increased the life expectancy of cancer patients, even those with metastatic disease. In this narrative review, we reported the main findings regarding TRP channel function in cancer pain models. TRP cation channels play a key role in

Providers' Barriers to Buprenorphine Prescribing for Cancer-Related Pain.

BACKGROUND: Full-agonist opioids are standard for treating cancer-related pain. However partial-agonist opioids (e.g., buprenorphine) are promising treatments with fewer side effects and a stronger safety profile. However, it is unclear how oncology and palliative care providers (Medical Doctors, Advanced Practice Providers, etc.) perceive prescribing of buprenorphine for cancer-related pain. METHODS: Participants (N = 42; 50% oncology) at a single healthcare system with multiple hospitals completed a one-time web-delivered survey assessing reported opioid prescribing patterns and barriers to

Neurosurgical Techniques for Chronic Pain in Adult Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a prevalent and often undertreated issue for adult cancer survivors, lasting well beyond the completion of curative treatment or during prolonged maintenance therapy. Historically, pain management in this population has followed strategies similar to those used for active cancer pain - primarily systemic opioids - despite the long-term risks of functional decline, endocrine disruption, and misuse during periods of survivorship that may span decades. SUMMARY: This review examines the evolving role of neuromodulatory and functional neurosurgical interventions for chr

Buprenorphine for Cancer Pain: Results from a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine may be safer and better-tolerated than full mu opioid receptor (MOR) agonists. Whether it effectively controls cancer-related pain is unclear. A prior review (Cochrane 2015) did not support prioritizing buprenorphine over full MOR agonists for cancer-associated pain. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: We conducted an updated systematic review of buprenorphine's effect on cancer- related pain including both new studies and additional study designs. Procedures/data/observations: We searched Cochrane, OVID Medline, EMBASE, EBSCO and Web of Science for studies published in any language

Integrative Medicine for Cancer-Related Pain: A Narrative Review.

Cancer-related pain (C-RP) is a prevalent and debilitating concern among patients with cancer, with conventional treatments limited in their ability to provide adequate relief, and by the adverse effects associated with their use. Complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) modalities have been shown to be potentially effective and safe for the treatment of pain and related symptoms, when used in conjunction with conventional medications and under medical supervision. An increasing number of oncology centers provide CIM within their conventional supportive and palliative care service, in an "

Targeting TRPV1 for Cancer Pain Relief: Can It Work?

Chronic intractable pain affects a large proportion of cancer patients, especially those with metastatic bone disease. Blocking sensory afferents for cancer pain relief represents an attractive alternative to opioids and other drugs acting in the CNS in that sensory nerve blockers are not addictive and do not affect the mental state of the patient. A distinct subpopulation of sensory afferents expresses the capsaicin receptor TRPV1. Intrathecal resiniferatoxin, an ultrapotent capsaicin analog, ablates TRPV1-expressing nerve endings exposed to the cerebrospinal fluid, resulting in permanent ana

Pharmacologic Management of Cancer-Related Pain in Pregnant Patients.

Despite being an essential part of whole-person care, patients with cancer often experience complex and under-treated pain. Managing cancer-related pain in patients who are also pregnant compounds the challenge for adequate pain management, as studies have largely excluded this population. Therapy for pain management should be guided by the cause and mechanism of pain. The objective of this review is to provide clinicians with an understanding of pain experienced by pregnant patients with cancer and medications that may be used to help manage cancer-related pain. Nociceptive pain results from

Interventional pain management in cancer patients-a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Pain is the most prevalent symptom in cancer patients. To improve pain care, World Health Organization (WHO) Pain ladder was introduced in 1986 as a template for choosing pain medications in oncological settings. Since then, advancements in oncological treatments have improved the survival of cancer patients, requiring prolonged analgesia in various treatment stages. Additionally, there have been newer challenges in pain management with opioid epidemic and associated opioid use disorders. This has shifted the focus from WHO Pain Ladder and brought new importance to the rapidly evol

Perioperative Pain Management and Cancer Outcomes: A Narrative Review.

Cancer-related pain is one of the most common and incapacitating symptoms for cancer patients. Cancer pain can be caused by diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, side effects and toxicity from therapy, or the cancer itself. Uncontrolled cancer-related pain is associated with inadequate quality of life and reduced functional status. Optimal pain management during the perioperative period requires a tailored approach. Interventions that are recommended for the management of acute surgical pain include regional anesthesia, local anesthetic infusions, non-opioid analgesics (ketamine, dexmedetomidi
