The rare phenomenon of gross intra-abdominal bleeding due to hepatic metastasis was seen in a young male who a short time before had undergone orchiectomy because of embryonal cell carcinoma. Following laparotomy, 4 liters of fresh blood were drained from the peritoneal cavity and the left lobe of the liver, containing a single large metastasis, was removed. It is stressed that when no other cause of such haemorrhage can be found in a patient known to have had malignancy, the possibility of bleeding from a metastasis should be considered and appropriate measures taken.

A 30 year old man with metastatic embryonal carcinoma became hypertensive during vinblastine, bleomycin, and cisplatin therapy. Three months after completion of therapy, accelerated hypertension occurred (blood pressure 210/140 mm Hg). Twenty pediatric patients with malignant disease were studied by whole body gallium scans. Seven had Hodgkin's disease, five had soft tissue sarcomas, three had neuroblastomas, two had Wilm's tumors, and one each had a hepatoblastoma, embryonal cell carcinoma, and sacrococcygeal teratoma. Of 50 sites studied, there was a true positive result in 17%, and in 58% there were false negative results. The method served best in patients with Hodgkin's disease, where the true positive rate was 64%. In no instance did the gallium scan affect the clinical management of a patient.

Most models suggest that the cell of origin of papillary carcinoma is the mature thyroid follicular epithelial cell. The mediastinum is the host for a number of relatively unusual primary neoplasms, as well as a frequent recipient of metastatic tumors. From the perspective of fine-needle aspiration cytomorphology, several distinct patterns are yielded. Yolk sac tumors were induced in fetectomized rats by displacement of the visceral yolk sac outside the uterus with or without injection of murine sarcoma virus (MSV) into the placenta. Twelve children with malignant sacrococcygeal teratoma containing embryonal carcinoma, were treated at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 1971 and 1980. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was performed in two cases of intra-abdominal tumors, one from retroperitoneal lymph nodes and one from a cryptorchid testis. A case of a malignant undifferentiated germ cell tumor in situ of an undescended testis diagnosed by needle biopsy is described.
