Ovarian carcinosarcoma (OCS) is a rare and lethal gynecological cancer. The present study reports on the case of a 61-year-old post-menopausal female with abdominal distension who was detected to have a large OCS. The patient underwent cytoreductive surgery, including sub-extensive hysterectomy, bilateral adnexectomy, sigmoid colon and partial rectal resection, and lymph node dissection. Postoperative pathology of the bilateral adnexal masses revealed carcinosarcoma. The main components of the carcinoma included serous carcinoma and a small amount of squamous cell carcinoma. The sarcoma compon…

Carcinosarcomas are rare, aggressive tumors seldom found in the sinonasal region. They classically consist of sarcomatous spindle cell and carcinomatous squamous cell elements. A 61-year-old woman presented reporting right-sided nasal discharge and obstruction. Examination demonstrated a large right-sided nasal mass, from which a biopsy was taken. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass arising from the maxillary antrum and extending into the nasal cavity, ethmoid air cells, and frontal sinus. Right total maxillectomy with resection of the nasal tumour component was …

PURPOSE: Carcinosarcoma, also known as Spindle Cell Carcinoma (SpCC), is a rare type of malignant tumor. Generally, this type of pathology occurs in the urogenital tract, the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and mammary gland; in the larynx, SpCC represents only 2-3% of all malignancies. Due to its rarity, there is currently no generally acceptable treatment guideline for this disease. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature of SpCC of larynx and report epidemiologic, clinicopathologic and main therapeutic approaches for this entity.
METHODS: A systematic li…

FOXA1, a transcription factor essential for the binding of other transcription factors on chromatin, is associated with hormone receptor-associated cancers, such as breast and endometrial cancer. It is also considered an antagonist of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In endometrial cancer, FOXA1 is considered a tumor suppressor; in carcinosarcoma, one of the most aggressive and rare subtypes of endometrial cancer, thought to be derived through an EMT mechanism, FOXA1 has not been studied. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible expression of FOXA1 in carcinosarco…

Uterine carcinosarcoma (USC) is a rare, aggressive primary neoplasm of the Uterus that represents less than 5% of all uterine malignancies. It usually affects older females in their seventh decade. USC disproportionally affects black women more and it has a worse prognosis than other endometrial carcinomas. We present a case of uterine carcinosarcoma in a young Caucasian female who presented with vague symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and severe iron deficiency anemia.

We present an extremely rare case of carcinosarcoma with 4 different tumor components in an 88-year-old female. After a diagnosis of acute cholecystitis, we performed percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage in the patient without success, followed by a cholecystectomy and choledocholithotomy. The mass was a 60 × 25 mm polypoid lesion of the gallbladder identified histologically as a carcinosarcoma with adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma and chondrosarcoma components. The biliary-type adenocarcinoma portion exhibited acinar growth patterns with columnar …

Carcinosarcoma (CS) is a rare mixed mesodermal malignancy most commonly affecting the female reproductive organs, respiratory tract, head, and neck. Though infrequent, it may affect the gastrointestinal tract, most often the oesophagus and only very rarely the rectum. Histologically, it is composed of two distinct elements of epithelial and mesenchymal origin. Clinically, it is a very aggressive tumour with many patients presenting with metastatic lymph nodes or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis. Prognosis is poor despite intervention with the majority of patients dying within six mo…

Carcinosarcoma is a highly aggressive and infiltrative tumor. A finding of this tumor in a paranasal sinus is exceedingly rare. We describe the case of a 61-year-old man who presented with a mass on the left side of his face. The mass was excised via a total maxillectomy with a modified radical neck dissection. Histologic analysis identified a mixture of carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. Within 1 month of surgery, the patient developed a sternal metastasis, and he died within a short period of time. The aggressive nature of this tumor and its metastases demand early diagnosis and promp…

BACKGROUND: Carcinosarcomas, a malignancy consisting of squamous cell carcinoma with sarcomatous features, are extremely rare and aggressive tumor of the vulva. Including this case, there are 17 cases reported in the literature. Risk factors for this entity are poorly understood.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a rapidly growing primary vulvar carcinosarcoma developing in an 84-year-old woman. The patient had previously received pelvic radiation for a squamous carcinoma of the anal canal. The excised vulvar tumor showed a superficial squamous carcinomatous element, associated vulvar intr…

A 58-year-old man was referred to our hospital with dysuria and elevation of prostate specific antigen (38.0 ng/ml). Prostate surface was smooth and elastic hard on digital rectal examination. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) indicated irregular boundary and low echoic area of the prostate. Prostate biopsy specimen included the components of adenocarcinoma (Gleason score 9) and sarcoma. The tumor had extended to the rectum and metastasized to bilateral obturator lymph nodes and right ischial bone (cT4N1M1b). We started hormone therapy for the adenocarcinoma component followed by total pelvic exen

OBJECTIVE: To investigate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of ovarian carcinosarcoma and the diagnostic value of MRI.
METHODS: The MRI features of ovarian carcinosarcoma and clinical data of 5 patients with ovarian carcinosarcoma were reviewed. All the lesions were confirmed by surgery and pathological examination.
RESULTS: MRI of ovarian carcinosarcoma in the 5 cases all showed large tumor mass and heterogeneous high-intensity on T2-weighted images and low-intensity on T1-weighted images, with laminar or stripe-like enhancement. Hemorrhage and necrosis were also displayed in…

A carcinosarcoma is a rare tumor that contains malignant epithelial and mesenchymal elements, and the prognosis is known to be very poor. It is usually detected in the head or neck, the respiratory tract, and the female reproductive tract, but it is rarely found in the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the colon. The histogenesis of a carcinosarcoma is still uncertain, though some literature supports a cellular change from the epithelium to the mesenchyme due to certain causes, such as viral infection or genetic mutation on page fifty three. We experienced a case of a colonic carcinosarcom…

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have indicated that the risk associated with tamoxifen may be substantially higher for uterine malignant mixed müllerian tumors and uterine sarcomas.
CASE: We present 2 cases of ovarian carcinosarcomas in patients with a personal history of breast carcinoma who were treated for a prolonged period with tamoxifen.
CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, these 2 cases are the first to describe the possible association between ovarian carcinosarcomas and previous personal and familial history of breast carcinoma and\or prolonged use of tamoxifen. These cases may suggest that li…

Carcinosarcomas of the ureter are rare biphasic neoplasms, with distinct malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. To the authors' knowledge there have been only 12 cases reported in the literature. Primary cartilaginous tumors of the ureter are also rare tumors. Thus far there has been a single case report of an extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the ureter in the German literature. Herein a unique case is reported of ureteral carcinosarcoma in an 81-year-old woman presenting with gross hematuria in which the sarcomatous component had extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcomato…

BACKGROUND: Carcinosarcoma of the colon is a rare histopathological entity with uncertain histogenesis, that shows both epithelial and mesenchymal malignant differentiation. Carcinosarcoma rarely affects the gastrointestinal tract and only few cases are reported in the colon. Herein we describe a carcinosarcoma of the ascending colon, with morphological, ultrastructural and molecular analysis.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old man was hospitalised for asthenia, weight loss and iron-deficiency anaemia. The patient underwent colonoscopy and adenocarcinoma was diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy. A r…

Carcinosarcomas (CS) of the prostate are very uncommon neoplasms defined by the admixture of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. We describe here two new examples of CS in two patients aged 66 and 77 years, the first without previous history of prostate adenocarcinoma and the second with a 5-year history of acinar type prostate adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of CS was made on the cystoprostatectomy specimen in the first case and transurethral resection in the second case. Both biphasic tumours exhibited papillary areas of ductal differentiation and conventional adenocarcinoma in th…
