The existing evidence on the association of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is limited and mixed. Moreover, no epidemiological studies have been conducted to comprehensively investigate this association in China. Hence, we performed a nationwide prospective cohort study to address these issues. Our study included 477,126 adults without a history of CVD. Participants were recruited from 10 diverse areas in China during 2004-2008, and followed up through December 31, 2016. Adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for CVD incidence was calculated using Cox regres

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dengue is a major arboviral disease in tropical and subtropical regions, traditionally regarded as an acute, self-limiting illness. However, emerging evidence suggests that its consequences may extend beyond the acute phase, especially involving the cardiovascular system. Reported manifestations include major adverse cardiovascular events, arrhythmias, thromboembolic complications, subclinical myocardial dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction, and vascular changes. Evidence remains fragmented due to variation in study designs, population characteristics, outcome definitions,

As COVID-19 transitions to an endemic stage, its long-term impacts on health, particularly cardiovascular disease (CVD), remain significant. While prior studies have focused on cardiovascular complications following SARS-CoV-2 infection, the question of inherent cardiovascular risk associated with genetic predisposition to COVID-19 has been less explored. This study investigates whether individuals genetically predisposed to COVID-19 may also be at higher risk for CVD, independent of actual infection. Using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis with data from pre-pandemic, SARS-CoV-2-naive pop

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at an increased risk of severe complications and death from community-acquired pneumonia such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Previous studies suggest that acute infection heightens the short-term risk of cardiovascular events.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) during the acute phase of S pneumoniae infection in patients with COPD.
METHODS: We conducted a self-controlled case series study in patients with COPD and a positive lower respiratory tract or blood culture

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are risk factors for severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular complications. The burden of RSV disease among adults with CVD is not yet fully understood and evidence remains to be consolidated through a systematic approach. Covering the publication period from January 1, 2000 to November 28, 2023, this systematic literature review documented RSV disease burden among adults ≥18 years with CVD including heart failure (HF), ischemic heart disease (IHD), and non-specified CVD. Relevant publications were ret

ABSTRACTScrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, often involves multiple organs, but its cardiovascular (CV) sequelae in survivors remain under-researched. This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) spanning 2010-2015 to assess CV risks among scrub typhus survivors. Excluding those with prior CV events, we focused on outcomes such as acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure hospitalization (HFH), strokes, new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF), aortic aneurysm or dissection, venous thromboembolism (VTE), and CV death. OBJECTIVES: To our knowledge, there is no systematic review examining CVD risks after a SARS-CoV-2 infection over time, while also taking into account disease severity. All evidence on the risk for pulmonary embolism (PE), myocardial infarction (MI), ischaemic stroke (IS), haemorrhagic stroke (HS), and arterial thrombosis following infection was evaluated.
METHODS: The protocol was registered with PROSPERO. We searched Pubmed, Embase, MedRxiv and screened the titles/abstracts and full texts. We extracted the included studies, assessed their quality, and estimated pooled risks by time after in

INTRODUCTION: Despite advancements in Cytomegalovirus (CMV) management, its impact on graft function, mortality, and cardiovascular (CV) health of organ transplant recipients (OTR) remains a significant concern. We investigated the association between CMV infection and CV events (CVE) in organ (other than heart) transplant recipients.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed and EMBASE, including studies that reported on CMV infection or disease and post-transplantation CVE. Studies of heart transplant recipients were excluded.
RESULTS: We screened 3875 abstracts and

Despite effective antiretroviral therapy, HIV co-morbidities remain where central nervous system (CNS) neurocognitive disorders and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-pathology that are linked with myeloid activation are most prevalent. Comorbidities such as neurocogntive dysfunction and cardiovascular disease (CVD) remain prevalent among people living with HIV. We sought to investigate if cardiac pathology (inflammation, fibrosis, cardiomyocyte damage) and CNS pathology (encephalitis) develop together during simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection and if their co-development is linked with mo

Since the very beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in early 2020, it was evident that patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) were at an increased risk of developing severe illness, and complications spanning cerebrovascular disorders, dysrhythmias, acute coronary syndrome, ischemic and non-ischemic heart disease, pericarditis, myocarditis, heart failure, thromboembolic disease, stroke, and death. Underlying these was excessive systemic inflammation and coagulopathy due to SARS-COV-2 infection, the effects of which also continued long-term as evidenced by post-COVI

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first reported in Wuhan, China, in late December 2019. Since then, COVID-19 has spread rapidly worldwide and was declared a global pandemic on 20 March 2020. Cardiovascular complications are rapidly emerging as a major peril in COVID-19 in addition to respiratory disease. The mechanisms underlying the excessive effect of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on patients with cardiovascular comorbidities remain only partly understood. SARS-CoV-2 infection is caused by binding of the viral surface spike (S) protein to the h

Combined antiretroviral therapy has improved quality and life expectancy of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, this therapy increases oxidative stress (OS), which in turn causes alterations in lipid and carbon metabolism, kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The Klotho gene has been implicated in cardiovascular risk increase. Klotho protein expression at X level decreases the risk of heart disease. HIV-positive people usually present low plasma levels of Klotho; thus, contributing to some extent to an increase in cardiovasc

BACKGROUND: Although combined antiretroviral therapy has substantially improved the prognosis of people living with HIV (PLHIV), mortality remains higher compared to the general population, mainly due to higher prevalence of non-HIV-related comorbidities, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We assessed the prevalence of CVD risk and its contributing factors in adult PLHIV versus general population controls in Greece.
SETTINGS: Cross-sectional comparison of PLHIV (Athens-Multicenter-AIDS-Cohort-Study; AMACS) versus general population controls (National health examination survey; EMENO).

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with cardiovascular complications, including acute cardiac injury, heart failure, and cardiogenic shock (CS). The role of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) in the event of COVID-19-associated cardiovascular collapse has not been established. We reviewed the existing literature surrounding the role of VA-ECMO in the treatment of coronavirus-related cardiovascular collapse. COVID-19 is associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular complications compared with previous coronavirus outbreaks (Severe Acute Respir

Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has become the pandemic of the new century. About 36.9 million people are living with HIV worldwide. The introduction of antiretroviral therapy in 1996 has dramatically changed the global landscape of HIV care, resulting in significantly improved survival and changing HIV to a chronic disease. With near-normal life expectancy, contemporary cardiac care faces multiple challenges of cardiovascular diseases, disorders specific to HIV/AIDS, and those related to aging and higher prevalence of traditional risk factors. Non-ischemic cardiovascular dis
