Tuberculosis in cattle is a chronic infectious-contagious disease characterized by the development of nodular lesions (granulomas) in mainly the lungs and regional lymph nodes. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, an acid-fast bacillus (AFB). Tuberculosis in the central nervous system is a rare condition in cattle. Herein, we describe the clinical and pathological findings of six neurotuberculosis cases in cattle diagnosed in Southern Brazil. The average age of the cattle affected was 12 months, and they varied in breed and sex. The clinical history ranged from 5 to 30 days and …

BACKGROUND: Reports on Sarcocystis-infection of cattle are outdated or lacking in many European countries, including those in the Central-Eastern part of the continent. Therefore, to assess the prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. among bovids in Hungary, a countrywide survey was initiated. In addition, fulminant deaths of four cattle, that showed clinical signs and post mortem lesions resembling acute sarcocystiosis ("Dalmeny disease"), were investigated.
METHODS: During the countrywide survey individual heart and oesophagus samples were collected at slaughterhouses from 151 beef cattle and from 1…

This paper describes the demise of rinderpest, focussing on the 20th Century and especially the period of the Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme, before proceeding to describe the process of accreditation of rinderpest freedom which is now virtually complete.

Wildlife serves as a source and a target for some infectious diseases of cattle. This article covers characteristics of the pathogens, Brucella abortus, Mycobacterium bovis, and bovine viral diarrhea virus; host species behavior; and external factors that influence the introduction, maintenance, and spread of infectious agents between wildlife and cattle.

Arthropod ectoparasites are the most ubiquitous life forms affecting ruminant animals and commonly affect the daily activity and health status of ruminants. This article describes the phenology of several important ectoparasites of livestock and small ruminants, and delineates some general control and management strategies for protecting domestic ruminants.

Ultrasonography is an ideal diagnostic tool for investigating gastrointestinal disorders in cattle. It is performed on standing non-sedated cattle using a 3.5 MHz linear transducer. In animals with traumatic reticuloperitonitis, inflammatory fibrinous changes, and abscesses can be imaged; however, magnets and foreign bodies are difficult to visualize because of the gas content of the reticulum. Ultrasonography can be used to assess the size, position and contents of the abomasum. Percutaneous ultrasound-guided abomasocentesis can be performed to evaluate the nature and chemical composition of …

Complex inter-relationships exist between certain micronutrients, immune function and disease resistance in cattle. Several micronutrients have been shown to influence immune responses. The relationship between deficiencies of some micronutrients and disease resistance is less clear. A number of studies have indicated that Cr supplementation may improve cell-mediated and humoral immune response as well as resistance to respiratory infections in stressed cattle. With respiratory-disease challenge models Cr generally does not affect disease resistance. Deficiencies of Cu, Se, vitamin E and Co in…

The transport of farm animals has been the subject of much research in recent years. This paper reviews the recent scientific literature pertinent to the road transport of cattle. The state of knowledge is summarised and recommendations for best practice based upon this are given. Areas which require further work are also identified.

The cases of neurological diseases at the Institute of Animal Neurology, University of Berne, from 1985-1994 were assessed. During this period 532 cattle with neurological symptoms were examined. After 1980 differential diagnostic investigation of rabies negative brains were not pursued anymore and the number of examined cattle brains had declined to 25-30 per year. With the occurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in 1990 in Switzerland the number of cattle brains examined has increased to 75-80 yearly. The most frequently diagnosed neurological diseases found are BSE, followed by…

Gastrointestinal mycosis was diagnosed in 73 lesions of 32 cattle without a history of engorgement, and tissues of 29 animals were examined histopathologically. The omasum was the target organ for infection, followed by the rumen and reticulum. Acute necrohemorrhagic lesions dominated, with infiltration of neutrophils and thrombosis. The etiologic diagnosis was accomplished by indirect immunohistochemical staining of fungal elements with a panel of mono- and polyclonal antibodies raised against fungal antigens. Aspergillosis and zygomycosis were diagnosed in one or more organs of 11 (34.4%) an…

Three cases of bovine protozoal abortion at three different dairy farms are reported. Multiple abortions had occurred, on two farms, and a sporadic abortion on the third farm. Histopathological examination of foetal tissues revealed a distinctive multifocal necrotising encephalitis as well as focal inflammatory lesions in the myocardium, liver, kidney and lung. In one foetus protozoal tissue cysts were found in the brain and individual and clustered tachyzoites were seen in brain, and lung. In another foetus a cluster of tachyzoites was seen in a section of a placentoma. Immunohistochemically,

Cardiac diseases of cattle may involve valvular structures, myocardium, pericardium, or blood vessels and are manifested by the clinical signs of cardiac dysrhythmias, cardiac murmurs, generalized edema, muffled heart sounds, jugular venous distention, jugular venous pulsations, pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, or ascites. Digoxin, quinidine, and furosemide can be used effectively to control signs of CHF and cardiac arrhythmias. Combination antimicrobial therapy can be successful for cows with infective endocarditis and thrombophlebitis. Pericardial fluid drainage may temporarily improve cat…

The first occurrence of "Hyena disease" in cattle in Finland is described. The affected beef bulls consumed very high doses of vitamins A, D and E. Some of them developed to "Hyena" bulls and some to "Hyena/dwarf"-bulls. The radiological signs in the skeleton were similar to those which can occur in connection with vitamin A and D overdoses.
