We present a highly unusual case and histological images of a patient who underwent complete resection of a perforated caecal adenocarcinoma caused by angiodestruction of the proximal vasculature by a distinct acute myeloid infiltrate. Both tumours were removed in their entirety at one visit to theatre and the patient remains well and in remission 18 months later.

Colonoscopy was performed on a 54-year-old man with occult melena in our hospital. A submucosal tumor with a maximum diameter of 5cm was detected in the cecum. The tissue of the submucosal tumor was not obtained by endoscopic biopsy, and tumor diagnosis could not be confirmed by this method. A large, hypodense, cystic structure extending below the inferior wall of the cecum was revealed by computed tomography (CT). Because the tumor was too large to be a benign tumor, we were able to conclude it was malignant. After receiving informed consent from the patient, laparoscopic right colectomy was

The distribution of regional lymph node metastases in carcinomas of the cecum, ascending colon, and transverse colon follows the vascular distribution in the ileocolic mesentery, ascending mesocolon, and transverse mesocolon. The location of these metastatic nodes can be recognized on CT scans when the anatomy of the vessels in the ileocolic mesentery and mesocolon is well understood. This knowledge is important in the preoperative staging of carcinomas of the colon for curative surgery and in the early detection of recurrent nodal disease after curative surgery.

Appendicitis can occur rarely in association with carcinoma of the caecum, particularly in the elderly. If this possibility is not appreciated and thorough laparotomy is not carried out at the time of initial surgery, an early malignant lesion may go unrecognised. In this situation, if appendicectomy is performed, it will need to be revised to a right hemicolectomy at a later date. Survival chances are then affected adversely due to the possibility of early dissemination of malignant disease through the breaching of intestinal integrity and tumour cell spillage. Two cases are reported where ca

Intestinal tuberculosis (TB) has 3 main forms: ulcerative, hypertrophic or ulcerohypertrophic, and fibrous stricturing. In the ulcerative form, barium examination reveals thickened folds, spasticity, and shallow ulcers involving the cecum and terminal ileum. Computerized tomography shows preferential thickening of the ileocecal valve and medial wall of the cecum as well as a few small regional nodes. In the hypertrophic or ulcerohypertrophic form, a hyperplastic reaction is seen in the exophytic masses around the ulcerated lumen on computed tomography. An inflammatory mass that extends into ad

In this study, presurgical gamma camera imaging and an intraoperative gamma detection probe were used in 12 consecutive patients 6 to 22 days after infusion with indium 111-labeled anticarcinoembryonic antigen monoclonal antibody (111In-MoAb). In three of 11 patients who underwent laparotomy, clinical management was affected by the probe findings: localization of occult retroperitoneal disease, identification of an occult cecal lesion, and localization of residual disease at a site of local recurrence. Of all intra-abdominal lesions seen using any method, the probe identified 18 (86%) of 21, c

Mucocele of the appendix is an uncommon condition characterized by luminal distension and accumulation of a mucoid material. Occasionally, it can be caused due to malignancy like cystadenocarcinoma, and the preoperative diagnosis of which is very rare. We report a case of a 64-year-old lady presenting with intermittent abdominal pain diagnosed on ultrasonography as a mucocele where preoperative (18)F-flurodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (FDG PET/CT) findings raised a strong suspicion of malignancy. FDG PET/CT findings brought about a change in therapeutic plan

Appendiceal intussusception is an uncommon pathologic condition. We report herein a case of appendiceal intussusception induced by appendiceal carcinoma. A 76-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because of epigastric pain. CT scan showed multiple concentric ring sign in ascending colon and enhanced tumor in transverse colon. Colonoscopy showed invagination of polypoid lesion which was pushed back to cecum endoscopically. Laparoscopy-assisted ileocecal resection with regional lymph node dissection was performed for cecal cancer. During surgery, the appendix was found to be inverted complete

Neoplastic diseases may be complicated by rheumatic diseases or may be occur with them. Dermatomyositis/polymyositis and polymyalgia rheumatica are described as paraneoplastic syndromes. We report a case with proximal muscular weakness as only symptom of colon cancer in the absence of other symptoms and laboratory abnormalities, and we discuss the nosological classification as a possible atypical form of polymyositis.

We report the clinicopathological findings of the first case of angiomyxolipoma of the colon. A 15-year-old female presented with acute abdomen. She was admitted as a case of intestinal obstruction and a palpable mass per rectum. Intraoperatively, intussusception of the cecum into the ascending and transverse colon was found. After reduction, a large polypoidal globular and soft mass, which was pedunculated, was felt in the transverse colon. Histological examination of the resected specimen revealed a tumor mass ari- sing from the submucosa of the colon, showing a branching filiform pattern. A
