Cellulose/Aminated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposite Aerogels for Oil Adsorption.

At present, the oil extraction and chemical industry and other industries produce a large amount of oily wastewater and organic sewage, and the world is suffering from oil spills and organic wastewater pollution. As a porous material, aerogels are promising in the field of oil adsorption. In this work, the nanocellulose/aminated multi-walled carbon nanotube (NC-MWCNT-NH2) nanocomposite aerogel with a high porosity of up to 97.80% is prepared by varying the weight percentage of MWCNTs-NH2, among which the nanocomposite aerogel with 0.1% weight percentage of MWCNTs-NH2 exhibits the best adsorpti…

Photothermal Catalysis of Cellulose to Prepare Levulinic Acid-Rich Bio-Oil.

As a carbon-neutral and renewable raw material, cellulose can be transformed into biomass fuels to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions. In view of harsh reaction conditions, low selectivity of product, and easy deactivation of the catalyst, this study studied the use of photothermal catalytic technology to convert cellulose into bio-oil rich in levulinic acid. It was discovered that a synergistic effect between heating and photocatalysis is present in cellulose degradation. Different metals were loaded on carbon nanotubes doped with titanium dioxide to prepare di…

Convenient Production of Photothermal Recycling Phosphorescent Materials from Cellulose and Lignin.

Developing recyclable room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) films using ultrafast fabrication techniques remains a critical yet challenging objective. With this research, we developed an RTP film (Cell-Lig) through ethanol-induced phase transition, achieving solid film formation within 1 s from ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [Bmim]Cl) solutions of cellulose and lignin. The phase transition also generated a confined rigid environment for Cell-Lig, activating thickness- and temperature-dependent green RTP emission from the incorporated lignin. Furthermore, red afterglow emis…

Nanoporous carboxymethyl cellulose aerogels with enhanced thermal insulation and mechanical toughness.

This study presents a facile method to fabricate nanoporous carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) aerogels with exceptional thermal insulation properties through metal ion cross-linking and supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) drying. The as-prepared aerogels exhibit remarkable characteristics, including low density (as low as 0.15 g cm-3), high specific surface area (up to 303 m2 g-1), high compression strength (stress of 17.31 MPa at 80 % strain), and low thermal conductivity (as low as 21.7 mW (m K)-1). The effects of varying CMC concentrations on the density, specific surface area, morphology, and…

Improving the bioactivity of cellulose acetate hemodialysis membranes through nanosilver modification.

The effectiveness and safety of hemodialysis can be hindered by protein accumulation, mechanical instability of membranes and bacterial infection during the dialytic therapy. Herein, we show that cellulose acetate membranes modified with the low-fouling polymers (namely polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyethylene glycol), followed by the in situ reduction of different densities of silver oxide(I) nanoparticles, can effectively address these limitations. These improvements comprise the enhanced resistance to the protein fouling, improved antimicrobial capabilities against S. aureus, increased selecti…

Regenerated Cellulose Films Coated with Waterborne Polyurethane with Enhanced Mechanical Properties.

Regenerated cellulose (RC) films with abundant sources and low processing costs are considered to be excellent biodegradable and recycled packaging materials. However, there is still a problem to be solved: the poor strength of RC films in the wet state. Polyurethane (PU) possesses excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this work, a PU coating is successfully introduced on the RC film surface via a facile surface engineering strategy, followed by plane hot-pressing process, and the RC@PU films are obtained. Notably, under wet conditions, RC@PU films show out…

Antimicrobial Activity of Amino-Modified Cellulose Nanofibrils Decorated with Silver Nanoparticles.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) conjugated with amino-functionalized cellulose nanofibrils (NH2-CNFs) were in situ-prepared by reducing silver ions with free amino groups from NH2-CNFs. The spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements confirmed the presence of non-agglomerated nanometer-in-size Ag NPs within micrometer-large NH2-CNFs of high (20 wt.-%) content. Although the consumption of amino groups during the formation of Ag NPs lowers the ζ-potential and surface charge of prepared inorganic-organic hybrids (from +31.3 to +19.9 mV and from 2.4 to 1.0 mmol/g at pH 7, respecti…

SCOBY Cellulose-Based Materials Hydrophobized Using Stearic Acid and Apple Powder.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a subject of interest for researchers due to its advantageous characteristics, including a straightforward manufacturing process, biocompatibility, and extensive modification potential. The hydrophilic nature of the material is beneficial in some applications, yet a limiting factor in others. This study aimed to develop BC-based materials with goFogureod moisture resistance. The modification of bacterial cellulose (BC) using apple powder, stearic acid, or a combination of these modifiers resulted in the formation of a range of materials, some of which had their surf…

Hydrophobic corn zein-modified cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films with antioxidant properties.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) can form strong biodegradable films; however, due to their hydrophilicity, moisture can degrade their mechanical and barrier properties. Corn zein (CZ) is a hydrophobic protein that when covalently linked with CNF films through peptide bonds, may improve their hydrophobicity. CZ was covalently linked to aminophenylacetic acid and aminobenzoic acid esterified CNF films which were then assessed for evidence of modification, hydrophobicity, mechanical properties, and antioxidant activity. Upon modification, an increase in hydrophobicity and an increase in antioxidant …

Precisely Printable Silk Fibroin/Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Alginate Bioink for 3D Printing.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting opens up many possibilities for tissue engineering, thanks to its ability to create a three-dimensional environment for cells like an extracellular matrix. However, the use of natural polymers such as silk fibroin in 3D bioprinting faces obstacles such as having a limited printability due to the low viscosity of such solutions. This study addresses these gaps by developing highly viscous, stable, and biocompatible silk fibroin-based inks. The addition of 2% carboxymethyl cellulose sodium and 1% sodium alginate to an aqueous solution containing 2.5 to 5% silk …

Hypersensitive Reaction of Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose Powder in Total Knee Arthroplasty.

The powdered form of oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC powder) is a widely used biodegradable hemostatic material in the field of surgery. There are several reports of its effectiveness and safety; however, excessive foreign body reactions remain a concern for surgeons in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A 70-year-old woman who underwent unilateral TKA using ORC powder to control perioperative blood loss exhibited a skin rash around her operated knee at six days postoperatively. These reactions were potentially hypersensitive to ORC powder. After receiving antiallergic medication for 18 days, …

Strongly-adhesive easily-detachable carboxymethyl cellulose aerogel for noncompressible hemorrhage control.

Hemostats that can strongly adhere to wound tissue and are easy to remove when stopping bleeding are favored for the control of noncompressible hemorrhage. Here, we prepared a citric acid (CA)-crosslinked and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) ester-activated carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-NHS) aerogel for noncompressible hemostasis. CA was used to crosslink CMC to form a strengthened structure. NHS ester was introduced to activate the adhesion of CMC-NHS aerogel to wound tissue and promoted blood coagulation through the formation of amide crosslinks between CMC and erythrocytes and free blood proteins.…

Optimizing ethyl cellulose-ethanol delivery towards enabling ablation of cervical dysplasia.

In low-income countries, up to 80% of women diagnosed with cervical dysplasia do not return for follow-up care, primarily due to treatment being inaccessible. Here, we describe development of a low-cost, portable treatment suitable for such settings. It is based on injection of ethyl cellulose (EC)-ethanol to ablate the transformation zone around the os, the site most impacted by dysplasia. EC is a polymer that sequesters the ethanol within a prescribed volume when injected into tissue, and this is modulated by the injected volume and delivery parameters (needle gauge, bevel orientation, inser…
