TEMPO-oxidised cellulose nanofibrils from bacterial cellulose: how the cellulose source influences the gelation mechanisms.

TEMPO-oxidation of cellulose is used to form water-dispersible, negatively-charged nanofibrils. It is known that the type of cellulose source influences the yield of TEMPO-oxidation, the number of carboxylate groups and the crystallinity index. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate its influence on water-based formulations. Dispersions of TEMPO-oxidised bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (OBCNFs) in aqueous suspensions were studied using both small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and rheology as a function of nanofibril concentration and addition of NaCl or sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and the res

Acute anaphylactoid reactions during hemodialysis in France.

A retrospective survey of anaphylactoid reactions during dialysis in France was conducted. In 52 of 112 hemodialysis units surveyed 111 patients who had suffered one or more anaphylactoid reactions during dialysis were identified. According to the Hamilton/Adkinson classification, in 31 patients reactions were minor, in 54 patients moderate, and in 26 patients severe. Four patients died of their reactions. A preponderance of reactions (75 and 11%) occurred with cuprammonium cellulose hollow-fiber and plate dialyzers, respectively. Severe dialyzer reactions were found to occur more frequently a

Direct carotid sinus approach to treatment of bilateral carotid-cavernous fistulas. Case report.

The authors present a patient with a complex vascular malformation composed of bilateral spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistulas (CCF's). The abnormality was supplied on the right side by the right external carotid artery (ECA) and the right internal carotid artery (ICA), and on the left side only by the left ICA. There was also an arteriovenous communication between the right ECA and the lateral sinus. Surgical embolization of both cavernous sinuses with oxidized cellulose was achieved on one side by direct puncture and on the other through one of its venous affluents, successfully occluding b

Insight into stability of dithiocarbamate-modified adsorbents: Oxidation of dithiocarbamate.

We previously reported that monoalkyl dithiocarbamate-modified cellulose (DMC) exhibited excellent adsorption performance for arsenite (AsIII), cadmium (CdII), lead (PbII), gold (AuIII), silver (AgI), platinum (PtIV), and palladium (PdII). However, its adsorption capability for AsIII decreased by 96.4% after two weeks of storage at 40 °C under an air atmosphere. This decrease in adsorption ability could occur for other metals that dithiocarbamates can extract. In this study, we investigated the adsorption performance of DMC for various metals before and after storage and proposed a possible me

The Turkish delight: a pliable graft for rhinoplasty.

In nose surgery, carved or crushed cartilage used as a graft has some disadvantages, chiefly that it may be perceptible through the nasal skin after tissue resolution is complete. To overcome these problems and to obtain a smoother surface, the authors initiated the use of Surgicel-wrapped diced cartilage. This innovative technique has been used by the authors on 2365 patients over the past 10 years: in 165 patients with traumatic nasal deformity, in 350 patients with postrhinoplasty deformity, and in 1850 patients during primary rhinoplasty. The highlights of the surgical procedure include ha

Impact of cellulose nanofibrils in biopolymer based-oleogels designed for curcumin encapsulation and 3D-printed food applications.

This study investigated the effects of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and TEMPO-oxidized CNF (T-CNF) on improving the physicochemical properties, stability, and controlled release characteristics of biopolymer (BP)-based oleogels designed for curcumin encapsulation and 3D-printed food applications. Incorporation of CNF and T-CNF to BP-based oleogels (pectin, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), alginate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC400), and methylcellulose (MC400)) resulted in a structural change from a disordered network to a highly interconnected fibrous structure, thereby enhancing oil reten

Preparation of a squaraine-bounded cellulose derivative for photocurrent generation system.

A regio-selectively squaraine (SQ)-bounded cellulose derivative (4) with a degree of substitution of SQ (DSSQ) of 0.55 was prepared from 6-O-(4-methoxytrityl) cellulose (1) by three reaction steps in 77% total yield. Lauryl SQ carboxylate (8) was also prepared as a reference sample. The photostability of SQ moieties of compound 4 in CHCl3 was not improved when compared with SQ-COOH (7), but that of SQ moiety of compound 8 was improved unexpectedly. The Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer films 4B and 8B on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode were successfully prepared from compounds 4 and 8 by a verti

A glucose oxidase-powered multi-responsive composite hydrogel with a cascade-amplified antibacterial response for wound dressing.

The complex microenvironment of wounds, characterized by hyperglycemia and bacterial infections, significantly impedes the healing process, thereby necessitating the development of highly effective bio-composite wound dressings. Herein, a recombinant glucose oxidase (GOD)-based cascade catalytic MIL@GOD was fabricated and encapsulated within a carbohydrate-rich dual-network hydrogel matrix composed of carboxyethyl chitosan (CECS) and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and mechanically reinforcing oxidized bacterial cellulose nanocrystals (OxBCNC) to construct a multi-responsive and cascade-amplifi

The Effect of Copper Nanoparticles and a Different Source of Dietary Fibre in the Diet on the Integrity of the Small Intestine in the Rat.

The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis regarding the effect of recommended (6.5 mg/kg) or enhanced (13 mg/kg) level of CuNPs in the diet in combination with different types of dietary fibre-cellulose (control), inulin, pectin or psyllium-on selected biological parameters of intestinal integrity in rats. Rats were randomly divided into 10 groups. The first two groups were fed a control diet that contained cellulose, and a mineral mixture with standard or enhanced content of CuCO3. Experimental groups were fed a diet supplemented with CuNPs (6.5 or 13 mg/kg) and combined with differen

Caffeine increases whole-body fat oxidation during 1 h of cycling at Fatmax.

PURPOSE: The ergogenic effect of caffeine on exercise of maximum intensity has been well established. However, there is controversy regarding the effect of caffeine on shifting substrate oxidation at submaximal exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acute caffeine ingestion on whole-body substrate oxidation during 1 h of cycling at the intensity that elicits maximal fat oxidation (Fatmax). METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, and counterbalanced experiment, 12 healthy participants (VO2max = 50.7 ± 12.1 mL/kg/min) performed two acute experimental trials after inges

Unusual lymphadenopathy diagnosed by endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration.

Oxidized cellulose, used as hemostatic in thoracic surgery, may cause in some cases foreign body reactions, and simulate other diseases. We report the case of a 39-year-old man operated on a middle lobe lobectomy for atypical carcinoid. The follow up chest-CT showed enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes, so endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration was performed suspecting recurrence of the tumor. The cytology results showed amorphous fragments such as foreign body reaction secondary to Pahacel®, used as hemostatic during the surgery. A few days later, the patient was re-oper

A case of spontaneous rupture of a uterine superficial varicose vein in midgestation.

A 25-year-old gravida two, nulliparous pregnant woman complained of a sudden onset of severe pain in the right lateral abdominal area and went to hospital at 28 weeks and 5 days' gestation. Since cyclic uterine contractions were observed, a diagnosis of preterm labor was made and tocolysis was carried out by the continuous venous infusion of ritodorine. She was transferred to Hamamatsu University Hospital and an emergency cesarean section was carried out due to non-reassuring fetal status. A hemoperitoneum of 850 mL was observed in the peritoneal cavity and an immature male baby weighing 1140

Homogenous catalysis and heterogenous recycle: Cellulose-supported acetylacetonate ion pair catalyst for cycloaddition of carbon dioxide to epoxide.

Designing catalysts that operate homogeneously during reactions while allowing heterogeneous recovery remains a significant challenge in carbon dioxide utilization. We developed a bifunctional cellulose-supported organocatalyst composed of an acetylacetonate anion and a protonated organic base for the cycloaddition of CO₂ with epoxide (CCE) reactions. 3-Acetylacetonate group was regioselectively anchored to C-6 position on cellulose backbone, then converted to acetylacetonate carbanion ion pair catalyst. An optimal cellulose-supported ion pair catalyst containing acetylacetonate carbanion (aca

Cellulose-Binding Electron-Transfer Cytochrome Composing AA8 and CBM104 from the Wood-Rotting Fungus Armillaria tabescens.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are activated by electrons supplied from external redox enzymes. Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) and pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)-dependent pyranose dehydrogenase (PDH) are electron donors to LPMOs. CDH and PDH each consist of two domains: a catalytic domain that oxidizes substrates to extract electrons, and an AA8 domain that receives and transfers these electrons to LPMOs. Although non-catalytic AA8 proteins comprising only an AA8 domain and a cellulose-binding module have been reported, their electron donors and physiological roles remain largely

One-Pot Synthesis and Electrospinning of Cellulose Derivatives Bearing Pseudo-Peptide Pendants via Ugi Four-Component Reaction for Functional Nanofiber Fabrication.

The one-pot synthesis and electrospinning of cellulose derivatives bearing pseudo-peptide pendants, which are expected to serve as novel chiral recognition materials, are reported. Ugi four-component reactions (U-4CRs) involving carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), formaldehyde, a glycine-based isocyanide (ethyl isocyanoacetate), and six different amino acid methyl esters as the carboxylic acid, aldehyde, isocyanide, and amine components, respectively, were employed to introduce pseudo-peptide pendants onto the cellulose backbone. The reactions proceeded successfully under weakly acidic conditions (

Influence of Cellulose Particles on Streptomyces spp. Growth, Morphology, and Metabolite Spectrum.

Filamentous soil bacteria of the genus Streptomyces are a major source of bioactive natural products, including antibiotics. However, their industrial cultivation is complicated by complex morphologies ranging from dispersed mycelia to dense pellets, which are closely linked to productivity. Microparticles, such as talc or aluminium oxide, are commonly added to modulate macromorphology, yet their effects across diverse Streptomyces species remain insufficiently characterized. Here, we systematically evaluated the impact of cellulose particles on growth, morphology, and metabolite production in

A mechanistic study on the alleged cellulose cross-linking system: Maleic acid/sodium hypophosphite.

A combination of maleic acid and sodium hypophosphite as a durable press finishing agent has been reported as a safer but equally effective alternative to conventional formaldehyde-based cross-linking agents for applications in cellulose-based fiber and textile finishing. However, the mechanistic details of this system have not yet been fully elucidated to allow optimization of the conditions. Effective cross-linking treatment requires high curing temperatures of ≥160 °C, which enhances oxidative and thermal degradation of cellulose. In this work, the sequential steps of the cross-linking mech

PEO/cellulose composite paper based triboelectric nanogenerator and its application in human-health detection.

Recently, cellulose paper based triboelectric nanogenerators (CPTENGs) has gained widely attention due to the development of wearable, green and miniaturized electronic products. Modification of cellulose fibers or paper is a feasible method to improve the output performance of CPTENGs, however, the simple and effective routes to improve the triboelectric property of cellulose paper still remain a challenge. Herein, we report a simple method to prepare PEO/cellulose composite paper (PEO/CCP) via mixing polyethylene oxide (PEO) with cationic cellulose fibers. Benefiting from amino groups and PE
