The neurologic complications of varicella-zoster (VZ) virus infections are manifested as zoster with or without CNS involvement, encephalomyelitis, or ocular involvement. Usually the association of VZ virus in these conditions has been determined by finding VZ antibodies in the serum. In a few instances, VZ antibodies have been detected in the CSF. We report two cases of VZ virus infection followed by neurologic complications involving the CNS in which VZ antibodies were present in the CSF. These two cases underscore the need and value of determining the presence of VZ antibodies in the CSF in

The incidence of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas on 2150 patients subjected to intracranial supra and subtentorial operations for non-traumatic lesions is reported. This incidence is higher in patients operated for posterior fossa lesions (3.7%) than in those operated for supratentorial lesions (0.94%) and among these is more frequent for frontal localizations. Finally therapeutical methods used for controlling this type of complication are reported.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of encephalitis involves identifying signs of neuroinflammation, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pleocytosis. However, an absence of CSF pleocytosis in encephalitis has been described, most notably in autoimmune encephalitis. We examined clinical characteristics and outcomes associated with the absence or presence of CSF white blood cell pleocytosis (≥5 cells/µL), to inform timely diagnosis and management of encephalitis.
METHODS: This retrospective study compares initial CSF profiles in 597 adult patients with all-cause encephalitis.
RESULTS: Of the 597 patie…
