Biomimetic MCC950-loaded cerium-layered double hydroxide nanoparticles for targeted treatment of Type 1 diabetes in streptozotocin-induced mice.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The destruction of β-cells in type 1 diabetes is driven by signalling cascades that ultimately lead to cell apoptosis. Both activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) act independently and synergistically to promote β-cell apoptosis and accelerate disease progression. Therapeutic approaches that concurrently inhibit NLRP3 activation and oxidative stress may therefore hold promise for preventing or slowing type 1 diabetes development and/or progression. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: This study developed a targeted nanotherape

Coordination-driven self-assembly of antioxidative and anti-inflammatory cerium-luteolin nanoparticles for effective treatment of ocular alkali burns.

Ocular alkali burns are a severe ophthalmic emergency characterized by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), persistent inflammation, and corneal neovascularization, often resulting in visual impairment. We develop novel hybrid nanoparticles (CEL NPs) through coordination-driven self-assembly of Ce3+, ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL), and luteolin (Lut) to achieve synergistic ROS scavenging and anti-inflammatory effects. CEL NPs protect human corneal epithelial cells and macrophages from oxidative stress and apoptosis in vitro. CEL NPs also suppress inflammatory responses by inhibiting t

Alpha-MnO2 catalyst with high formaldehyde oxidation and moisture resistance by joint cerium modification and phosphoric acid post-treatment.

Moisture is one prevalent interfering component during toxic formaldehyde treatment. Herein, Ce0.2Mn-P was synthesized through Ce incorporation and H3PO4 post-treatment, thereby enhancing the activity and water tolerance of α-MnO2. Removal efficiencies for ∼315 mg/m3 formaldehyde are ∼52 %, ∼54 %, ∼88 % and ∼85 % over MnO2, MnO2-P, Ce0.2Mn and Ce0.2Mn-P, respectively. Various analyses have shown that Ce modification is the primary factor enhancing catalytic oxidation. Besides, under two humidities (1.8 and 3.0 vol%), the inactivation rate of Ce0.2Mn-P is below 20 %, which was much lower than t

Scavenging Reactive Oxygen Species by Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Prevents Death in a Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma Preclinical Mouse Model.

Cancer cell survival and proliferation are correlated with increased metabolic activity and consequent oxidative stress, driving metabolic shifts that interfere with the immune response to malignant cells. This is the case of high-energy-demanding angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL), a highly aggressive cancer with poor survival rates, where malignant CD4+ PD-1high T cells show increased mitochondrial activity and Reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Here, we report that administration of ROS scavenging cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles in an AITL preclinical mouse model leads to

ROS scavenging and immunoregulative EGCG@Cerium complex loaded in antibacterial polyethylene glycol-chitosan hydrogel dressing for skin wound healing.

The elevation of oxidative stress and inflammatory response after injury remains a substantial challenge that can deteriorate the wound microenvironment and compromise the success of wound healing. Herein, the assembly of naturally derived epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and Cerium microscale complex (EGCG@Ce) was prepared as reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger, which was further loaded in antibacterial hydrogels as wound dressing. EGCG@Ce shows superior antioxidation capacity towards various ROS including free radical, O2- and H2O2 through superoxide dismutase-like or catalase-mimicking

Effect of cerium oxide on physical, structural, and spectroscopic properties of tellurium-borate glasses for cool greenish light emitting devices.

This investigation is to explore how CeO2 affects the physical, structural, and spectroscopic characteristics of tellurium soda-borate glasses for potential applications in optoelectronics. The conventional melt quenching technique was used to produce the necessary glasses by adding different amounts of CeO2 to the components of the tellurium soda-borate glasses. The non-crystalline nature of the samples was validated by the X-ray diffraction patterns. The density of glass samples was determined by Archimedes principle, and hence other physical properties like polaron radius, oxygen packing de

Lattice confinement of cerium dopants via quenching enables d-band center engineering for high-performance anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers.

Lattice confinement of large-radius cerium enables atomic-level electronic modulation for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) applications but remains challenging. Herein, a metallic salt solution quenching strategy achieves lattice-confined cerium doping in iron sulfide composite nanoflowers (Fe9S10/FeS). The ultrafast cooling generates abundant grain boundaries and lattice strain, which collectively reduce FeFe orbital overlap, narrow the Fe d-band width, and shift the d-band center upward. These electronic modifications cons

Direct ambient synthesis of cerium-sensitized Cs3TbCl6 microcrystals with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and robust stability for white lighting.

Recently, lead-free zero-dimensional Cs3TbCl6 (CTC) microcrystals have shown great potential for applications in light-emitting diodes. However, two major limitations of CTC are their low absorption coefficient and harsh preparation. In this study, Ce3+ with 4f-5d orbital coupling was used to dope CTC, enabling the excitation band to shift from UV-B to UV-A and elevating the photoluminescence quantum yield from 33.52% to 96.43%. In addition, cerium-sensitized CTC microcrystals (MCs) with different dopant ratios were obtained to study the energy transfer process from Ce3+ to Tb3+, which were pr

A Cerium Oxide Loaded Hyaluronic Acid Nanosystem Remits Glucose Oxidative Stress-Induced Odontoblasts Mitochondrial Apoptosis through Regulation of PGAM5 Pathway.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) induced mitochondrial oxidative stress (OS) can lead to severe injury of dental pulp. The cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNP) have been proven to have excellent antioxidative activity. However, whether CNP can relieve dental pulp damage caused by DM and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we modified ceria with hyaluronic acid to prepare nanoceria with good biocompatibility, water solubility, and stability, namely, HACNP (hyaluronic acid cerium oxide nanoparticles). We demonstrated the protective effect of HACNP on diabetic OS-induced mitochondrial apop

Structure-Tailoring Cerium Nanozymes with Self-Cascade ROS Scavenging Catalysis Modulate the Microbiota-Gut-Joint Axis for Rheumatoid Arthritis Therapy.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is closely associated with intestinal microbiota dysbiosis, highlighting the therapeutic potential of targeting the microbiota-gut-joint axis. Current interventions often overlook the cascade nature of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in driving intestinal and systemic inflammation. Herein, a valence-engineered CeOX-based nanozyme with self-cascade catalytic activity is developed, mimicking sequential oxidase-superoxide dismutase-peroxidase functions to enable continuous ROS scavenging while minimizing oxygen generation.
