Detection of Spirometra sp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) eggs and morphological characterization of adult specimens from free-living wild carnivores in Paraguay.

Pseudophilid cestodes the genus Spirometra can infect a wide range of intermediate hosts in larval stages, while adult stages parasitize domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. In South America, descriptions of adults in wildlife are scarce. This study reports the presence of Spirometra sp. eggs in three species of wild carnivores from Paraguay (Chrysocyon brachyurus, Leopardus geoffroyi and Procyon cancrivorus), and microscopic characterization of a recovered adult specimen from L. geoffroyi. Fecal samples were examined using conventional methods, revealing eggs compatible with Spirometra sp.

Review of the Progamotaenia macropodis (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) species complex from Australian macropodid marsupials, with description of P. mollicula sp. nov.

Genetic evidence indicates that Progamotaenia macropodis Beveridge, 1976 (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), found in various macropodid host species, is a complex of cryptic species. However, the genetic data are incomplete, and no morphological re-appraisal of the species has been undertaken since its original description. Here, additional mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I sequence data have been added from the type host, Macropus giganteus, as well as other host species, and a morphological study of all available material undertaken. A new species, Progamotaenia mollicula sp. nov., is erected f…

Ultrastructural, cytochemistry and electron tomography analysis of Caryophyllaeides fennica (Schneider, 1902) (Cestoda: Lytocestidae) reveals novel spermatology characteristics in the Eucestoda.

Spermatozoon formation in Caryophyllaeides fennica (Schneider, 1902) is characterised by the following: (1) apical electron-dense material in the zone of differentiation, (2) typical striated roots situated unconventionally in opposite directions in early stages of spermiogenesis, (3) intercentriolar body composed of three electron-dense and two electron-lucent plates, (4) free flagellum and a flagellar bud that correspond to a greatly reduced flagellum and (5) rotation of free flagellum and a flagellar bud to the median cytoplasmic process at 90°. The development of two flagella of significan

A new monozoic tapeworm, Parabreviscolex niepini n. g., n. sp. (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), from schizothoracine fishes (Cyprinidae: Schizothoracinae) in Tibet, China.

A new monozoic cestode, Parabreviscolex niepini n. gen. and n. sp. (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), is described from the type-host Schizopygopsis younghusbandi Regan, 1905 (Cyprinidae: Schizothoracinae) and Schizothorax waltoni Regan, 1905 (Cyprinidae: Schizothoracinae) in the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the upper tributary of the Brahmaputra River on the Tibetan Plateau. The new genus is placed in the Capingentidae because the vitellarium is situated partly in the medullary and cortical parenchyma, i.e., neither completely external nor internal to inner longitudinal muscles. Parabreviscolex n. gen. is …

Anthelmintic activity of ripe fruit extract of Solanum myriacanthum Dunal (Solanaceae) against experimentally induced Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda) infections in rats.

Although there are many effective drugs available to treat intestinal worms, the fact remains that they remain out of reach to a majority of the population in many areas of the world. On the other hand, traditional plant-based remedies continue to be an important therapeutic aid for treating worm infections throughout the world, especially in the developing nations. Solanum myriacanthum Dunal is a perennial shrub that is used in the folk medicine of Tangkhul Naga tribe of India for treating intestinal worms. This study evaluates the anthelmintic activity of its ripe fruit extract using experim

Differential diagnosis and molecular characterization of Hymenolepis nana and Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea: Hymenolepididae) based on nuclear rDNA ITS2 gene marker.

Given the widespread distribution and medical implication of members of the genus Hymenolepis, specific identification of the aetiological agent becomes imperative. For precise diagnosis of the species, molecular techniques such as PCR and RFLP of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (rDNA-ITS2) gene marker were carried out. The results showed distinct restriction patterns for both Hymenolepis nana and Hymenolepis diminuta when digested with either of the enzymes RsaI, HaeIII or HhaI. The annotated rDNA-ITS2 sequences from the two species revealed differences in the length; the

Insights on the host associations and geographic distribution of Hymenolepis folkertsi (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) among rodents across temperate latitudes of North America.

Synoptic data and an understanding of helminth parasite diversity among diverse rodent assemblages across temperate latitudes of North America remain remarkably incomplete. Renewed attention to comprehensive survey and inventory to establish the structure of biodiverse faunas is essential in providing indicators and proxies for identifying the outcomes of accelerating change linked to climate warming and anthropogenic forcing. Subsequent to the description of Hymenolepis folkertsi in the oldfield mouse, Peromyscus polionotus, additional specimens of hymenolepidids were collected or discovered
