BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a chronic non-infectious lymphoedema affecting individuals exposed to red clay soil in endemic areas. Evidence from International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) treatment centers' registers suggests that a significant proportion of registered patients with podoconiosis fail to re-attend for treatment, putting them at risk of worsening disability associated with the lymphoedema and attacks of acute adenolymphangitis. Despite the growing body of research on emotional labor, little has been known about the social consequences of emotional labor. Drawing on emotional dissonance theory, the authors investigate the relationship between the felt emotional dissonance and prosocial behavior (e.g., donation to a charity). Over a 12-month period, this survey was conducted prospectively to examine the complication rate associated with the insertion and use of central venous catheters on the Louisiana State University Service at Charity Hospital, New Orleans. No attempt was made to alter or influence the current techniques and methods for catheter insertion. Three-hundred and ninety-seven patients received 554 catheters. Evidence is presented that Felty's syndrome (FS) is rare among black patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). All of 12 patients with FS seen at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, Texas betwen 1964 and 1978 were white.
