School, child care and camp exclusion policies for chickenpox: A rational approach.

Widespread varicella vaccination in Canada since 2007 has changed the epidemiology of chickenpox, with a significant decline in varicella-related hospitalizations. However, there will always be a varicella-susceptible population because of immune-compromising treatments or conditions and/or parental vaccine refusal. This document updates and replaces a 1999 statement by the Canadian Paediatric Society. The CPS position on school and child care exclusion policies has not changed since the original statement, but because there have been two published reports of varicella outbreaks associated wit…

Social Phobia Is Associated with Delayed Onset of Chickenpox, Measles, and Mumps Infections.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence showing that infectious diseases in childhood play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of neurodevelopmental and o … other anxiety disorders listed above and for sex. RESULTS: The timing of viral childhood diseases (chickenpox, measles, and mumps) was consistently delayed in social phobia, notably both in men and women. We found no evidence for a reversed sequence of onset of phobia symptoms before that of the infections included. CONCLUSION: Social phobia was the only e …

Vaccines for post-exposure prophylaxis against varicella (chickenpox) in children and adults.

BACKGROUND:: Live attenuated varicella vaccines for the prevention of varicella (chickenpox) has been demonstrated both in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and in population-based immunisation programmes in countries such as the United States. However, many countries do not routinely immunise children against varicella, and exposures continue to occur. Although the disease is often mild, complications such as secondary bacterial infection, pneumonitis and encephalitis occur in about 1% of cases, usually leading to hospitalisation. The use of varicella vaccine in persons who have recently be…

Exposition to chickenpox of two children with autoinflammatory syndromes under treatment with anakinra.

We report two children with autoinflammatory syndromes treated with anakinra who came in contact with the varicella-zoster virus after being exposed accidentally to infected children: both cases were managed prophylactically with specific antichickenpox intravenous immunoglobulins and anakinra temporary suspension; neither adverse events nor complications related to the natural course of chickenpox were experienced by the two patients. The risk of developing infectious events should be closely monitored, because of the absence of data concerning long-term safety of biological agents in the ped…

Tuberculosis, chickenpox and scabies outbreaks in an orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS in Jamaica.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to describe the investigation and management of outbreaks of acute tuberculosis, varicella zoster virus … iretroviral therapy. All staff mantoux test results were negative. Fifteen (68%) children developed chickenpox as well as three caregivers. The index case was a 13-year-old resident attending a nearby school with HIV negative children. This varicella outbreak went on to affect household members for the caregivers as well as other residential facilities nearb …

Occurrence of chickenpox during pregnancy in women seropositive for varicella-zoster virus.

In a group of 21 women counseled after exposure to chickenpox during pregnancy, 4 developed varicella despite initial studies showing that preinfection sera were varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-seropositive by fluorescent anti-membrane antibody, latex agglutination, ELISA, and VZV glycoprotein immunoblot assay. Further investigations showed that 2 of the 4 had low-titer (1/100), low-avidity, VZV-reactive IgG3 antibodies by ELISAs of preinfection sera. After chickenpox, these women developed primary-like serologic responses to VZV. Two women with high-titer (1/1600, 1/3200), high-avidity, IgG1 ant…

Fatal varicella in an adult: case report and review of the gastrointestinal complications of chickenpox.

An unusual and fatal case of primary varicella in an adult is presented. Involvement of the small intestine first manifested as abdominal pain and later progressed to gastrointestinal bleeding with subsequent dissemination of the infection. Although it has previously been speculated that gastrointestinal bleeding can result from infection with the varicella-zoster virus, the data from this case include histologic and cultural evidence that supports the clinical observations. The literature has been reviewed, and the management of this patient has been critically evaluated.

Experimental studies on the prevention and treatment of chickenpox and herpes zoster with measles vaccine.

In 151 chickenpox patients treated with live attenuated measles vaccine, the cure rate was 100%. In 145 cases of herpes zoster, the effective rate was 100% (completely cured in 91.7% and improved in 8.3%). In the treated group, the time needed for the subsidence of fever and skin rash and the duration of the disease were markedly shorter than those in the control group (P less than 0.01). It is particularly effective for alleviating pain, preventing and relieving postherpetic neuralgia in patients with zoster. The application of measles vaccine to the patients in the chickenpox incubation peri…

Antibody response to varicella-zoster virus surface glycoproteins in chickenpox and shingles.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-infected cell surface proteins were investigated using extrinsic radiolabelling of the cell surface, immunoprec … to these glycoproteins during various clinical circumstances are described. In acute sera from all chickenpox patients and in the majority of acute shingles sera, antibodies reactive with glycoproteins could not be detected. In chickenpox convalescence, antibodies reactive with glycoproteins of mol. wt. 170K, 105K, 53K and 45K were identified, whilst during …

Development of a one-step diagnostic and differential immunochromatographic method for mpox and chickenpox.

OBJECTIVE: Mpox and chickenpox are highly contagious diseases with similar clinical symptoms and co-infection, and diagnostic tests are extremely useful in their differentiation. Mpox virus and chickenpox virus are the main causative pathogens of mpox and chickenpox respectively. This study aims to develop a rapid diagnostic immunochromatographic trip for differential diagnosis of mpox and chickenpox viruses. METHODS: An immunochromatographic assay (ICA) based on the double-antibody sandwich format was developed. First, the paired monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were prepared: for mpox, the dete…

Pyomyositis as a rare musculoskeletal complication of chickenpox in a pediatric patient case report.

Chickenpox is a common viral infection that mostly affects children from 5 to 9 years old, but it can also occur at any age group. Although typically self-limiting, chickenpox can rarely cause a severe disease and serious complications in approximately 2% of patients. Musculoskeletal complications, though less common, may be both life- and limb-threatening. Clinical manifestations include cellulitis, abscess formation, pyomyositis, necrotizing fasciitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, gangrene, and toxic shock syndrome. Pyomyositis occurs when bacteria enter muscle tissue and start prolifera…

Parallel pathogens: Coexistence of chickenpox and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura-A case report.

This case report documents the unusual co-occurrence of immune thrombocytopena (ITP) and chickenpox in a 15-year-old girl. Initial symptoms included shortness of breath, chest pain, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Laboratory results revealed significant anemia and thrombocytopenia. Treatment involved blood transfusions, prednisolone, and iron supplementation. The patient's vesicular skin rash emerged 8 weeks later, prompting the combined diagnosis of ITP and chickenpox. Antiviral treatments, blood transfusions, and supportive care were used in the course of treatment, leading to full recovery. T…
