Zootherapy and zoonotic risk: a global evaluation of the relationship between the use of body parts in traditional medicine and the risk of pathogen exposure.

Traditional medicinal practices involve recurrent contact between humans and animal body parts, increasing the chance of zoonotic transmissi … the highest-risk tissues predominating in Didelphimorphia, Lagomorpha and Perissodactyla, Cetacea, Chiroptera, Carnivora and Rodentia. Our results indicate that zoonotic risk in medicinal mammals is more strongly associated with biological and ecological characteristics of the species than with the diversity of medicinal applications per species alone. Survey on helminths of bats in the Yucatan Peninsula: infection levels, molecular information and host-parasite networks.

Helminth species of Neotropical bats are poorly known. In Mexico, few studies have been conducted on helminths of bats, especially in regions such as the Yucatan Peninsula where Chiroptera is the mammalian order with the greatest number of species. In this study, we characterized morphologically and molecularly the helminth species of bats and explored their infection levels and parasite–host interactions in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. One hundred and sixty-three bats (representing 21 species) were captured between 2017 and 2022 in 15 sites throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Conventional mor…

[Formation of population gene pools of zoonotic viruses, potentially threatening biosafety].

The possible formation of population gene pools of zoonotic viruses with a respiratory route of transmission and a possibility of a pandemic … Coronaviruses formed a gene pool by interaction with Amphibia (subfamily Letovirinae) and then with Chiroptera in Tertiary (110-75 million years ago) with transformation to Artiodactyla (Eocene - 70-60 million years ago), and only 10-2 thousand years BC acquired the ability to a respiratory transmission and became Alphaviruses, a seasonal infection of humans …

Using host traits to predict reservoir host species of rabies virus.

Wildlife are important reservoirs for many pathogens, yet the role that different species play in pathogen maintenance frequently remains unknown. This is the case for rabies, a viral disease of mammals. While Carnivora (carnivores) and Chiroptera (bats) are the canonical mammalian orders known to be responsible for the maintenance and onward transmission of rabies Lyssavirus (RABV), the role of most species within these orders remains unknown and is continually changing as a result of contemporary host shifting. We combined a trait-based analytical approach with gradient boosting machine lear…

Ecological and evolutionary drivers of haemoplasma infection and bacterial genotype sharing in a Neotropical bat community.

Most emerging pathogens can infect multiple species, underlining the importance of understanding the ecological and evolutionary factors that allow some hosts to harbour greater infection prevalence and share pathogens with other species. However, our understanding of pathogen jumps is based primarily around viruses, despite bacteria accounting for the greatest proportion of zoonoses. Because bacterial pathogens in bats (order Chiroptera) can have conservation and human health consequences, studies that examine the ecological and evolutionary drivers of bacterial prevalence and barriers to pat…

First come, first served: neuronal processing of multi-echo streams in the auditory cortex of echolocating bats.

Echolocating bats emit acoustic pulses that get reflected off objects. The spatial information carried by the echoes enables bats to avoid obstacles in darkness. Usually, every pulse is followed by a cascade of echoes arising from multiple objects. By using echolocation sequences where single pulses are followed by echo cascades, we recently demonstrated that cortical neurons predominantly responded to the leading echo. Responses to lagging echoes from a cascade were suppressed, suggesting that spatial information from the most immediate object is processed at the cortex level. In that study,

Mismatched and underrepresented: bat-virus diversity and phylogeographic bias in experimental infection studies.

Despite growing interest in bat-virus interactions, experimental infection studies (EIS) remain taxonomically and geographically restricted, … competence, immune diversity, and coevolutionary dynamics and risk overgeneralizing results across Chiroptera. These skews create a "mix-and-match" problem in which experimental pairings often do not reflect co-evolved host-virus relationships, limiting inference about host competence, immune tolerance, and zoonotic risk. To improve ecological relevance and …

Context-dependent responses of bats to artificial light at night in urban and natural woodlands.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a pervasive environmental pollutant that disrupts circadian rhythms, behaviour, and ecological interactions across taxa. Bats are particularly vulnerable, as illumination increases perceived predation risk and interferes with nocturnal foraging. While the spatial and spectral effects of ALAN have been documented, the extent to which prior exposure to ALAN modulates behavioural responses remains unclear. We experimentally tested whether bat responses to a novel lighting event differ between chronically illuminated and naturally dark environments. Using a pair

Trypanosomatid species infecting bats in the Fiocruz Atlantic Forest Biological Station, an urban forested fragment in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Trypanosomatids (Protozoa; Kinetoplastea) are obligate parasitic protozoans that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including bats - the only volant mammals, widely distributed across the globe. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Atlantic Forest remnants persist within urban landscapes, including the Fiocruz Atlantic Forest Biological Station (EFMA), a unit embedded in a highly urbanized environment. Between 2013 and 2019 (excluding 2015), field surveys were conducted in four landscape physiognomies with different degrees of environmental degradation. Blood and other tissue samples (spleen, live

Comparative hematology of the Myotis blythii.

Despite being a widespread group of mammals, bats have not been sufficiently studied in terms of their hematological parameters. There is a lack of data on the immune cells within their hematopoietic organs, such as the spleen and bone marrow, as well as on the structures involved in hematopoiesis, like erythroblastic islets. The aim of our work was to study hematological parameters including hemapoietic organs and hemoglobin in one of the most common species of bats, the lesser mouse-eared bat (Myotis blythii). Erythropoiesis in Myotis blythii (sometimes we can refer to the species as lesser

Microplastic contamination in neotropical frugivorous bats (Phyllostomidae: Stenodermatinae, Carolliinae) shows no biome-specific differences between Cerrado and Amazon Forest.

Microplastic contamination has become an urgent concern for global ecosystems, especially for wildlife health in areas under intense anthropogenic pressures. This study analyzes the presence of microplastics in fruit bats (Phyllostomidae: Stenodermatinae and Carolliinae) in two Brazilian biomes: Cerrado and Amazon. Surprisingly, bats from the Amazon presented higher levels of contamination than those from the Cerrado, challenging the idea that more open and historically modified landscapes, such as the Cerrado, would have higher contamination. Land use and land cover classifications did not in

Anogenital papillomatosis associated with a novel papillomavirus in a grey-headed flying fox.

A 0.5-cm nodular thickening of the vagina was observed in a flying fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) that had been rescued after becoming entangled in fruit netting. Over the following 6 mo, the thickening progressed to diffuse multinodular mucosal thickening of both the vagina and anus. The proliferative lesions were removed surgically. Histologically, the thickened mucosa was arranged in numerous small exophytic papillomas. Cells within the basilar layers were crowded and basophilic. Rarely, enlarged cells that contained increased quantities of pale, smudged eosinophilic cytoplasm [consistent wit

Comparative morphology in the context of facial reduction: Modularity in primate, dog, and bat crania.

Biological variation in the mammalian skull is the product of a series of factors including changes in gene expression, developmental timing, and environmental pressures. When considering the diversity of extant mammalian crania, it is important to understand these mechanisms that contribute to cranial growth and in turn, how differences in cranial morphology have been attained. Various researchers, including Dr. Sue Herring, have proposed a variety of mechanisms to explain the process of cranial growth. This work has set the foundation on which modern analysis of craniofacial morphology happe

Molecular detection of Histoplasma capsulatum in organ samples from bats randomly captured in urban areas of Araraquara, São Paulo state, Brazil.

The mycosis histoplasmosis is also considered a zoonosis that affects humans and other mammalian species worldwide. Among the wild mammals predisposed to be infected with the etiologic agent of histoplasmosis, bats are relevant because they are reservoir of Histoplasma species, and they play a fundamental role in maintaining and spreading fungal propagules in the environments since the infective mycelial phase of Histoplasma grows in their accumulated guano. In this study, we detected the fungal presence in organ samples of bats randomly captured in urban areas of Araraquara City, São Paulo, B

Evaluation of Mastadenovirus and Rotavirus Presence in Phyllostomid, Vespertilionid, and Molossid Bats Captured in Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil.

Bat-borne viruses may affect public health and the global economy. These mammals have a wide geographical distribution and unique biological, physiological, and immunogenic characteristics, allowing the dissemination of many known and unknown viruses. Enteric viruses, such as adeno (AdV) and rotaviruses, are recognized as the main causative agents of disease and outbreaks. In the present study, the presence of viruses from Adenoviridae and Reoviridae families was evaluated in molossid, phyllostomid, and vespertilionid bats captured in Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, between September 2021

Zoonotic bacterial pathogens in bats samples around the world: a scoping review.

The aim of this scoping review was to describe the zoonotic bacterial pathogens already reported and their frequency in different bat species. Six databases were searched, without restriction on the year or location where the studies were carried out. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 146 studies that were published between 1964 and 2020 (most after 2005) were selected. In these studies, 102 zoonotic bacterial genera were described in different samples of fourteen bat families in 55 countries, suggesting the possible role of bats as hosts for these pathogens. The pathogens mainly

Bat-Associated Pathogenic Leptospira spp. from Forest Fragments in Southwestern Brazilian Amazonia.

Bats are known as potential carriers of different pathogens; these animals have been identified worldwide as an important reservoir of different species of Leptospira. Therefore, there has been an increasing interest in studying leptospirosis in neotropical bats in the Amazon. This region is a fertile ground for zoonotic diseases, given the intense process of deforestation, urbanization, opening of new agricultural frontiers, predatory hunting, effects of climate change, and loss of biodiversity. Based on this, the aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency of infection associat

Caudal auricular muscle variations and the evolution of echolocation behavior in pteropodid bats.

Among bats, rhinolophoids and yangochiropterans, but not pteropodids, exhibit laryngeal echolocation. Although Rousettus has been regarded as the only pteropodid capable of echolocation using tongue clicks, recent evidence suggests that other species of pteropodids are also capable of echolocation using wing clicks. Studies on laryngeal echolocators suggest that delicate ear movements are essential for the echolocation behavior of bats and that the cervicoauricularis muscles play a critical role in such ear movements. In this study, we observed the gross anatomy of cervicoauricularis muscles i…

Tick salivary gland components dampen Kasokero virus infection and shedding in its vertebrate reservoir, the Egyptian rousette bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus).

BACKGROUND: The human-pathogenic Kasokero virus (KASV) circulates in an enzootic transmission cycle between Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs; Rousettus aegyptiacus) and their argasid tick ectoparasites, Ornithodoros (Reticulinasus) faini. Although tick salivary gland components have been shown to potentiate virus infection in vertebrate non-reservoirs (i.e. incidental hosts or small animal models of disease), there is a lack of information on the effect of tick salivary gland components on viral infection and shedding in vertebrate reservoirs. METHODS: To determine the impact of tick salivary gla
