Orbital melanoma.

Primary or secondary orbital melanomas are extremely rare tumors; they represent less than 1% of primary orbital neoplasms. Over 90% of primary orbital melanomas arise from melanocytes (congenital ocular melanosis, oculodermal melanosis). In the Department of Ophthalmology, Comenius University, Bratislava, in period 2001-2007, a total number of 79 patients with uveal melanoma (dg. C69) were treated with radical surgery, combined techniques or isolated stereotactic radiosurgery, 45 (57%) patients with ciliary body and choroidal melanomas were treated with primary enucleation, 34 (43%) patients

Serous Retinal Detachment in a Patient With a Port-Wine Birthmark Associated With Prostaglandin Analog Therapy.

An 11-year-old girl with a port-wine birthmark (PWB), diffuse choroid hemangioma (DCH), and glaucoma experienced decreased vision upon starting treatment with bimatoprost. The patient was switched to latanoprostene bunod. Her vision remained reduced. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with serous retinal detachment (SRD). Both SRD and vision improved following prostaglandin analog (PGA) cessation. Patients with PWB are likely to have DCH and glaucoma. DCH itself poses a risk factor for SRD. Certain glaucoma management modalities may further increase this risk. This report highlights the importan

'Solitary idiopathic choroiditis' or a tumour of scleral origin: A case report based hypothesis.

We here hypothesize the scleral origin of 'Solitary Idiopathic Choroiditis', a yellowish, nodular lesion that resembles other choroidal tumors. Systemic investigations were done to rule out causes like tuberculosis and sarcoidosis. Multimodal imaging was done for better characterization and to distinguish it from other choroidal lesions. Fundus imaging revealed a yellowish-orange, well-defined nodular lesion resembling solitary idiopathic choroiditis inferotemporal to the disc. Swept source optical coherence tomography (SSOCT) showed a nodular lesion arising from the sclera with compression of

Sporadic Hemangioblastoma Arising from the Infundibulum.

Hemangioblastomas are rare vascular tumors most often found in the posterior fossa and cervical spinal cord and commonly associated with von Hippel-Lindau Disease. We report a case of sporadic hemangioblastoma in a patient without von Hippel-Lindau Disease. Imaging characteristics included a solid, suprasellar mass that was homogeneously enhancing. These findings most resembled a pituicytoma or choroid glioma because of the close association with the infundibulum and the homogeneous avid enhancement. Microscopically, the neoplasm was seen to be composed of vascular channels associated with foa

Intraventricular perineurioma: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Perineurioma, a rare benign nerve sheath neoplasm occurring in either an intraneural or soft tissue form, has never been reported to arise in the central nervous system. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We describe the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of a perineurioma arising in the choroid plexus of the third ventricle in a 65-year-old woman and causing obstructive hydrocephalus. INTERVENTION: The lesion, apparently unassociated with a nerve, was gross totally resected by frontal craniotomy using a left-sided transcallosal approach. Short-term follow-up sho

Bilateral cavernous malformations resulting from cranial irradiation of a choroid plexus papilloma.

We report a case of multiple parietal cavernous malformations in a thirteen year old female who received cranial irradiation following incomplete resection of a choroid plexus papilloma. The cavernous malformations, which developed within the prior parietal radiation ports, were diagnosed nine years after the patients' radiation treatment when the patient presented with increasing frequency of seizures. Family history was negative for familial cavernous malformations. Due to the worsening frequency of seizures, the patient underwent resection of these two cavernous malformations with diagnosis

Malignant intracranial teratoma in a juvenile Wistar rat.

An intracranial malignant teratoma was identified in a 91-day-old male Wistar rat manifesting central nervous system-related clinical signs. This tumor occupied the right midbrain and portions of the right caudal cerebrum and cranioventral cerebellum. Microscopically, the tumor contained intermingled cartilage, bone (with medullary hematopoietic tissue), fibrous connective tissue, skeletal muscle, fat, pseudostratified ciliated epithelium, stratified squamous epithelium, serous and mucoserous glands, and neural tissue with ependymal and choroid plexus epithelia. Poorly differentiated cells wit

[The regression behavior of choroid melanoma following radiotherapy--a new prognostic parameter?].

The present paper reports on follow-up examinations of 246 patients after Ruthenium106 treatment of choroidal melanomas (follow-up time 1.8 to 13 years). In January 1988, 212 patients were alive and free of metastases; 15 had died, 12 of them of melanoma metastases, and 17 could not be followed up. In a retrospective analysis of factors influencing tumor-related mortality, the rate of regression of irradiated tumors was found to be particularly significant. The mean time taken to reduce tumor volume by half was 4.4 months in patients who died of metastases, as against 6.6 months in a matched g

Rare Case of Hemorrhagic Atypical Choroid Plexus Papilloma of Fourth Ventricle in Adult: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Choroid plexus papillomas are highly vascular tumors, and such tumors causing subarachnoid hemorrhage have been reported in literature. Similarly, few articles have reported atypical fourth ventricular choroid plexus tumors in adults. However, such an atypical tumor presenting with grossly hemorrhagic transformation without any acute symptoms could not be found in the literature.

Pure endoscopic ultrasonic removal of choroid plexus papillomas of the third ventricle: technical report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the choroid plexus of the third ventricle are uncommon. Surgical excision is technically challenging because of the rich vascularisation, central location, and high incidence in young children. Open microsurgical resection is considered the standard treatment. However, attempts at purely endoscopic removal of choroid plexus tumors of the third ventricle have also been made in the past, with encouraging results. CASE REPORTS: We report our experience with endoscopic ultrasonic removal of two cases of tumors of the third ventricular choroid plexus. The first case was a lar

Laser interstitial thermal therapy as a radiation-sparing approach for central nervous system tumors in children with cancer predisposition syndromes: report of a child with Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation and alkylating chemotherapies increase secondary malignancy risk in patients with cancer predisposition syndromes (CPSs), such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive ablation technique that has not been associated with mutagenic risks. We describe the case of a child with LFS and a history of treated choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) who developed a second primary glial tumor that was safely treated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided LITT. OBSERVATIONS: A 4-year-old male with left parietal World Health O

Choroid plexus carcinoma in two siblings, with a novel genetic mutation in TP53 - A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is an uncommon aggressive neuroectodermal-derived childhood brain malignancy with a dismal prognosis, especially when tumor protein p53 (TP53) mutations or malfunctions are present. The occurrence of these cancers is linked to germline and somatic anomalies at a number of genetic loci. We present a case report of CPC in two siblings which was found to be linked to a unique genetic mutation of TP53 in heterozygous state in both the father and the patient. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-year-old female child presented with a history of vomiting, headache, and s

The extreme anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach for pure aqueduct tumors: surgical technique and case series.

Purely aqueductal tumors represent a rare but distinct entity of neoplasms with characteristic morphology and clinical presentation. This study aims to describe the extreme anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach as a surgical option for purely aqueductal tumors in the upper part of the cerebral aqueduct and present the surgical results. Prospectively collected data of 4 patients undergoing the extreme anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach for purely aqueductal tumors in the upper cerebral aqueduct was analyzed. The technique is a variation of the anterior interhemispheric

Multimodal imaging of amelanotic choroidal melanoma.

Amelanotic choroidal melanoma (ACM) is an extremely rare malignant tumor affecting the uvea. Because of the complex structure characterizing this kind of lesions, its morphologic features are partially understood, especially if looking to its vascular network. In this paper, we described in details the multimodal imaging features of ACM. Moreover, we disclosed new insights about different orders of blood vessels characterizing this tumor. Despite the entire vascular network is partially detectable by conventional dye-based angiography, it was reconstructed in its entirety by means of optical c

Ocular neurofibromatosis.

A 4 1/2-month-old girl with unilateral congenital glaucoma of the left eye subsequently underwent five surgical procedures that proved to be unsuccessful in controlling the intraocular pressure. Neurofibromatosis was diagnosed at the age of 5 1/2 years when she was found to have a plexiform neuroma of the left eyelids and multiple café au lait spots including in the left temple. Two years later the buphthalmic left globe was enucleated. Histopathologic findings included a diffuse neurofibroma of the ciliary body and choroid, peripheral anterior synechiae, total angle closure, and endothelializ

Case Report: Reversible Hyperglycemia Following Rapamycin Treatment for Atypical Choroid Plexus Papilloma in an Infant.

In this study, atypical choroid plexus papilloma was treated with high-dose rapamycin for 17 days preoperatively in an infant. Rapamycin significantly reduced the blood supply to the tumor while reducing the tumor volume, and most of the tumor was resected successfully. However, the infant developed hyperglycemia related to the rapamycin dose, which was effectively controlled by adjusting the dose and applying insulin.

Is observation really appropriate for small choroidal melanomas.

Many, if not most, patients with a suspected small choroidal melanoma are currently managed by observation until tumor enlargement is documented. Current evidence appears to be insufficient to determine the correctness of this approach. A randomized clinical trial that could resolve this issue is probably not feasible. In the absence of satisfactory evidence, the decision about how to manage such patients depends on a subjective benefit-risk analysis that takes into account two competing but indeterminate risks: the risk of inadequate treatment for those patients who have a true melanoma and t
