A new cyclic depsipeptide, crocapeptin C (1), containing 3-amino-6-hydroxy-2-piperidone (Ahp) was isolated from the methanol extract of the myxobacterium Melittangium boletus. The chemical structure of crocapeptin C (1) was determined through NMR and ESI-MS analysis. The stereochemistries of the constituent amino acids in crocapeptin C (1) were determined using the advanced Marfey's method and ROESY spectrum data. Crocapeptin C (1) exhibited potent inhibitory activity against chymotrypsin with an IC50 value of 0.5 µM.

Caldecrin was originally isolated from the pancreas as a factor that reduced serum calcium levels. Chymotrypsin- and Pronase-treated human erythrocytes were refractory to invasion by P. knowlesi merozoites; invasion was not inhibited by trypsin or neurammidase treatment. These data implicate a surface protein other than sialoglycoprotein as the receptor site for merozoites. Invasion of rhesus erythrocytes was unaffected by pretreatment with these enzymes. Differences in membrane structure of erythrocytes from various species may explain the absence of an enzyme effect on rhesus erythrocytes.

(RS)-Diethyl-2-benzyl-succinate was resolved using alpha-chymotrypsin. The two enantiomers were then elaborated to yield (S)-(+) and (R)-(-)-3-benzyl-N-[(methyl-sulfonyl)oxy]succinimide and the inhibitory activity of the two enantiomers toward human leukocyte elastase was subsequently determined. The k2/KI values for the R and S isomers were found to be 330 and 1500 M-1 s-1, respectively.

Three main polypeptide neurotoxins M9, M10, M14, possessing paralytic activity in mice, have been isolated from the venom of the Central Asian scorpion Buthus eupeus. The amino acid composition of these toxins was determined. Toxins M9 and M14 were digested with trypsin, chymotrypsin, Staphylococcus aureus proteinase and cleaved with BNPS-skatole. The complete amino acid sequences of the toxins M9 and M14 were established.

When a large quantity of the venom of the scorpion Androctonus australis Hector is submitted to a purification procedure it is possible to purify a new toxin, toxin I", which is lethal to mouse, and present in very low quantities. The yield is 0.04%. The amino acid sequence of this newly discovered toxin only differs from toxin I of the same scorpion by an extra arginine residue at the C-terminal end provided that the sequence of toxin I, at positions 34 and 35, is in agreement with newer information provided in this paper.
