PURPOSE: To report bilateral plasmacytoma of the ciliary body in a healthy patient.
METHODS: Clinicopathologic report.
RESULTS: A 55-year-old woman with iritis developed an iridociliary mass in the left eye. Systemic evaluation was normal. Fine-needle aspiration (FNAB) of the mass revealed atypical, binucleate plasmacytoid cells with positive leukocyte common antigen staining, suggestive of plasmacytoma. A 3-year-old girl presented with a distorted pupil and decrease of visual acuity. A ciliary body mass at the superior-temporal quadrant could be seen at slit-lamp examination. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed a lesion with lobulated surface, arising at the ciliary body, composed of compact and cystic areas. An iridocyclectomy was performed but the tumour recurred after a few months. The eye was then enucleated. Histopathologic evaluation showed sheets and cords of proliferated medullary epithelium. Pigmented (PE) and nonpigmented epithelial (NPE) cells were carefully dissected from the ciliary processes of rabbit eyes and maintained in vitro. The molecular mechanisms by which primary cilia regulate energy homeostasis remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated whether the ciliary GTPase ARL13B regulates energy homeostasis and whether its localization to cilia is required to control body weight and feeding. In the present study, the lenses and ciliary bodies of 20 ostrich eyes were studied macroscopically and microscopically. The histological slides were studied after staining by hematoxylin and eosin, Verhoeff, Van Gieson, and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS).
