The effects of extracellular citric acid acidosis on the viability, cellular adhesion capacity and protein synthesis of cultured human gingival fibroblasts.

Root surface demineralization is widely used as an adjunct to periodontal treatment. To clarify the influence of citric acid root conditioning on periodontal wound healing, the effects of citric acid and associated extracellular acidosis on the viability (MTT assay), attachment and protein synthesis ([3H]-proline incorporation into trichloroacetic acid-precipitated proteins) of human gingival fibroblasts (GF) were investigated. A concentration of 47.6 mmol/L of citric acid (pH 2.3) in water led to total cell death within three minutes of incubation. Media containing 23.8 mmol/L and 47.6 mmol/L

Biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic combined with fibrillar collagen with and without citric acid conditioning in the treatment of periodontal osseous defects.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the combination of biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic (BCP) and collagen and citric acid root conditioning would promote accelerated new attachment of periodontal tissue to the root surface in dogs. Intrabony defects were surgically produced for each animal and were made chronic for 16 weeks. These defects were assigned to two study treatment and one control group: ceramic-collagen without citric acid (CO-CE); ceramic-collagen with citric acid (CO-CE-CA); and control (surgical debridement and root planing only). Results showed that all groups g

Treatment of intraosseous periodontal defects with a combined adjunctive therapy of citric acid conditioning, bone grafting, and placement of collagenous membranes.

A total of 25 proximal, intraosseous periodontal defects were treated in 21 adult patients. A 3-prong adjunctive, regenerative treatment approach was used. The treatment included (1) citric acid conditioning of the root surfaces, (2) grafting of particles of decalcified, freeze-dried homologous bone, and (3) placement of freeze-dried, homologous dura mater sheets between the replaced surgical flaps and the tooth surfaces. The results, as evaluated by probing attachment and probing bone level measurements, during 1 year of observation, demonstrated limited improvements of the treated defects. T

Impact of Citric Acid on the Structure, Barrier, and Tensile Properties of Esterified/Cross-Linked Potato Peel-Based Films and Coatings.

The valorization of potato peel side streams for food packaging applications, especially for the substitution of current petrochemical-based oxygen barrier solutions such as EVOH, is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, potato peel-based films and coatings (on PLA) were developed containing 10-50% (w/w potato peel) citric acid (CA). To determine the impact of CA concentration on the structure and physicochemical properties of cast films and coatings, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, moisture adsorption isotherms, tensile properties, light transmittance, oxygen permeability, carbon dioxide transmi

An advanced recording and analysis system for the differentiation of guinea pig cough responses to citric acid and prostaglandin E2 in real time.

Cough number and/or sound have been used to assess cough sensitivity/intensity and to discriminate cough patterns in clinical settings. However, to date, only manual counting of cough number in an offline manner is applied in animal cough studies, which diminishes the efficiency of cough identification and hinders the diagnostic discrimination of cough patterns, especially in animals with pulmonary diseases. This study aims to validate a novel recording/analysis system by which cough numbers are automatically counted and cough patterns are comprehensively differentiated in real time. The exper

The effect of citric acid and fibronectin application on healing following surgical treatment of naturally occurring periodontal disease in beagle dogs.

It has recently been suggested that following the exposure of root surface collagen with citric acid, the addition of topically applied fibronectin might promote healing with a fibrous re-attachment. The purpose of this study was to determine the benefit of citric acid demineralization and fibronectin application in the surgical treatment of severe, naturally occurring periodontal disease in Beagle dogs. The 4 treatment modalities employed were: (1) surgery alone (mucoperiosteal flaps); (2) surgery plus fibronectin; (3) surgery plus citric acid; (4) surgery plus citric acid followed by fibrone

Citric acid enhances physiological and biochemical tolerance of rye (Secale cereale L.) seedlings to cadmium toxicity and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Crops at high altitudes often face simultaneous ecological stress from cadmium (Cd) and freeze-thaw cycles during growth. In this study, rye (Secale cereale L.) was selected as the model organism to examine the physiological impacts of exogenous CA application (19 mg/L) on rye seedlings exposed to both individual and combined stresses of freeze-thaw and cadmium (30 mg/L). Molecular docking studies revealed interactions between Cd and the active sites of CAT, chlorophyll, and POD proteins. The results demonstrated that combined stress increased malondialdehyde (MDA) by 40.95%, hydrogen peroxide

Preparation of corn starch/polyvinyl alcohol-based citric acid-phloretin nanofiber membranes for fresh-cut asparagus lettuce and carrot slices preservation.

This study used corn starch (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the membranes-forming matrix, combining citric acid (CA) and phloretin (PL) as functional components with antibacterial and anti-whitening properties. The electrospinning method was employed to prepare the membranes (CS/PVA/CA-PL). Mechanical properties, thermal stability and antibacterial activity of composite membranes were characterized, and their fresh-keeping capacity was evaluated. The results showed that compared with the pure CS/PVA membranes, the CS/PVA/CA-PL exhibited a 2.36-fold increase in elongation at break and a 2.2

Synergistic remediation of cadmium and BDE-209 co-contaminated soil using Solanum nigrum assisted by Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and citric acid.

Co-contamination of cadmium (Cd) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil is common, posing serious ecological and health risks. Simultaneous remediation of both pollutants using plants is particularly challenging due to their contrasting environmental behaviors. The challenge is chelators can enhance Cd extraction by plants but Cd inhibits microbial activity, limiting PBDEs degradation. To tackle this, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi show promising potential as they produce extensive hyphae networks capable of immobilizing Cd and enhancing rhizosphere microbial activity. However,

Generation of citric acid-hyperproducers independent of methanol effect by high-level expression of cexA encoding citrate exporter in Aspergillus tubingensis.

Methanol reportedly stimulates citric acid (CA) production by Aspergillus niger and A. tubingensis; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we elucidated the molecular functions of the citrate exporter gene cexA in relation to CA production by A. tubingensis WU-2223L. Methanol addition to the medium containing glucose as a carbon source markedly increased CA production by strain WU-2223L by 3.38-fold, resulting in a maximum yield of 65.5 g/L, with enhanced cexA expression. Conversely, the cexA-complementing strain with the constitutive expression promoter Ptef1 (strain LhC-1)

Citric acid modified biochar application at a low dosage can synchronically mitigate the nitrogenous gas pollutants emission from rice paddy soils.

Raw biochar with high pH possibly stimulated ammonia (NH3) volatilization in the agricultural soil. We hypothesized that the modified biochar (MBC) with low pH can synchronically decrease the NH3 and nitrous oxide (N2O) losses. We performed a two-year experiment to clarify how citric acid MBC influence the NH3 volatilization and N2O emission as well as the underlying mechanisms. Two typical paddy soils, i.e., Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, receiving equal urea N with 240 kg ha-1 but varied rates of MBC with 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1 (named Urea, Urea + MBC5, Urea + MBC10, and Urea + MBC

Hydrogen sulfide sensor based on tapered fiber sandwiched between two molybdenum disulfide/citric acid composite membrane coated long-period fiber gratings.

In this work, a novel hydrogen sulfide detection scheme based on tapered fiber seeded in two long-period fiber gratings (LPGs) coated by a molybdenum disulfide/citric acid composite membrane is proposed and fabricated. The input light of a broadband source is coupled twice by passing through two LPGs with identical parameters, from which a Mach-Zehnder interferometer can be formed. The composite sensitive membrane was prepared with molybdenum disulfide and citric acid, which was coated on the surface of the two LPGs. The experimental results show that in the range of 0-70 ppm of hydrogen sulfi

Collagen based film with well epithelial and stromal regeneration as corneal repair materials: Improving mechanical property by crosslinking with citric acid.

Corneal disease can lead to vision loss. It has become the second greatest cause of blindness in the world, and keratoplasty is considered as an effective treatment method. This paper presents the crosslinked collagen (Col)-citric acid (CA) films developed by making use of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The results showed that the Col-CA films had necessary optical performance, water content. The collagenase resistance of CA crosslinked films was superior to that of EDC crosslinked films. And CA5 film (Col:CA:EDC:NHS=60:3:10:10) had the bes
