BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate submucous cleft palate (SMCP) patients in order to document the age of diagnosis, cause of referral, symptoms and palate findings, objective evaluation of nasalance and velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD), and intervention type.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The archive of Hacettepe University Cleft Lip and Palate, Craniomaxillofacial Anomalies Research, Treatment, and Application Center was reviewed retrospectively, and 166 patients diagnosed with SMCP were documented.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients at the time of initial referral was 10 …

Isolated cleft palate without cleft lip is a rare deformity. Cleft lip and cleft palate can sometimes develop in combination with a syndrome due to genetic causes. Affected patients have morbidity through life from birth and experience comprehensive treatment for such clefts including surgery. It is extremely rare that the untreated clefts are found during routine cadaveric dissection, since many patients have treatment for clefts in developed countries. Herein, we present a case of an untreated incomplete isolated cleft palate on the right side of the maxilla. An oronasal fistula was found in…

Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-cleft lip/palate (AEC) syndrome, also known as Hay-Wells syndrome, is an autosomal genetic disease with the main features of ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum, ectodermal defects, and cleft lip/palate. The authors report a patient with 17 months old girl with AEC syndrome having ankyloblepharon, cleft and palate, and ectrodactyly with some associated features. Etiology, clinical features, differential diagnosis, and treatment have been elaborated in this clinical report.

The term cleft palate (CP) refers to midline defects extending from the prealveolar ark to the uvula, and these defects present with varying degrees. CP may be complete, incomplete, unilateral, bilateral, or submucosal. It is often observed with cleft lip (CL). In various studies, the incidence of isolated CP has been reported as 1.3 to 25.3 per 1000 births. As a result of deterioration of the anatomical structure of the palate, illnesses such as regurgitation, respiratory tract infections, otitis, and speech disorders may occur. These defects are often observed in the midline and are rarely l…

Children with cleft palate are at risk for speech problems, particularly those caused by velopharyngeal insufficiency. There may be an additional risk of speech problems caused by malocclusion. This article describes the speech evaluation for children with cleft palate and how the results of the evaluation are used to make treatment decisions. Instrumental procedures that provide objective data regarding the function of the velopharyngeal valve, and the 2 most common methods of velopharyngeal imaging, are also described. Because many readers are not familiar with phonetic symbols for speech ph…

The article presents the cases of cleft palate surgical treatment with simultaneous intervention in ENT organs (bypass of the tympanic cavity, segmental or total adenotomy, etc.) with the restoration of vomer anatomy and hard palate reconstruction by means of super-elastic low-profile nickel titanium implant. The article describes the advantages of the method in comparison with the conventional ones.

Despite advances in ultrasound technology, the sensitivity for detection of facial clefts at the routine mid-trimester details scan remains relatively poor. This can be improved by the use of a three-point ultrasound screening protocol, although this is not routine in many countries. When a facial cleft is suspected at the routine scan, further imaging is usually required to detail the extent of the cleft and presence or absence of any other abnormalities. Involvement of the fetal palate is an important finding that will determine the requirement for surgery, audiology, and orthodontic service

Occult submucous cleft palate is a congenital deformity characterized by deficient union of the muscles that normally cross the velum and aid in elevation of the soft palate. Despite this insufficient muscle coverage, occult submucous cleft palate by definition lacks clear external anatomic landmarks. This absence of anatomic signs makes diagnosis of occult submucous cleft less obvious, more dependent on ancillary tests, and potentially missed entirely. Current diagnostic methodologies are limited and often are unrevealing in the presurgical patient; however, a missed diagnosis of occult submu…

OBJECTIVES: To investigate salivary proteins with proteomic technologies to evaluate protein composition differences between samples with cleft lip and palate and healthy controls.
DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization tandem time-of-flight (MALDI TOF/TOF) mass spectrometry was used as a high-throughput analytical technique for identification of nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate stimulated salivary proteins. The samples consisted of two groups: 31 cleft lip and palate patients and a control group with 20 healthy volunteers.
RESULTS: The presence of cleft lip and p

The case of a 13-month-old child who developed a life-threatening macroglossia with airway obstruction following palatoplasty for a cleft palate is reported. As direct laryngoscopy was not feasible a laryngeal mask (LM) was inserted to secure the airway. Under fiber optic guidance an endotracheal tube was then introduced via the LM. In this article the incidence, pathophysiology, clinical dynamics, options for emergency anesthesia management and organizational implications of this rare but typical complication in the field of oral and craniomaxillofacial surgery are reported.

Clefts of the palate are common birth defects requiring extensive treatment. They appear to be caused by multiple genetic and environmental factors during palatogenesis. This may result in local changes in growth factors, extracellular matrix (ECM), and cell adhesion molecules. Several clefting factors have been implicated by studies in mouse models, while some of these have also been confirmed by genetic screening in humans. Here, we discuss several knockout mouse models to examine the role of specific genes in cleft formation. The cleft is ultimately caused by interference with shelf elevati

OBJECTIVE: The present investigation was conducted to examine the prevalence of preschoolers with cleft palate who require speech therapy, demonstrate significant nasalization of speech, and produce compensatory articulations. The relationship among these three dependent variables and the independent variables of cleft type and age of primary palatal surgery was also examined.
PARTICIPANTS: The participants included 212 preschoolers with repaired cleft palate aged 2 years 10 months to 5 years 6 months.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Chi-square analyses were performed to examine the relationship betw…

The treatment of cleft lip and palate extends over the infancy, childhood, and adolescence of individuals who are born with this condition. The children and their families contend with multiple surgeries throughout these years. Depending on the severity of the cleft, the families may also need to cope with speech therapy, ear infections, learning disabilities, and various orthodontic treatments. The end result of these treatments and interventions should be a child, teen, or adult who is an appropriately contributing member of society at each stage of development. The psychological support need

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/CP) is one of the most common structural birth defects with treatment including multiple surgeries speech therapy, and dental and orthodontic treatments over the first 18 years of life. Providing care for these patients and families includes educating patients and parents about the genetics of CL/CP, as well as meeting the immediate medical needs. Attempts at identifying susceptibility loci via family and case-control studies have proved inconsistent. It is likely that initial predictions of the complex interactions involved in facial development were…

This is a report of a cleft palate-craniofacial team's experience with 768 patients that have had clefting over 22 years, with a primary focus on function and prevention of communication disorders associated traditionally with cleft palate. The treatment philosophy is based on tenets of child development and the dependency of neuropsychobiological development on the child's inherent competency, and early environmental stimulation and support. The applied treatments include ensuring early and adequate hearing, psychosocial adaptation of the parent and child through training for applications of …

In surgical management of cleft lip and palate, appreciation of the special anatomy and physiology of the human premaxilla is more important than the question of whether it is a separate bone. To take advantage of the potential of the premaxilla, both primary and secondary surgical procedures must strive to establish a nearly normal medial septal system and nasolabial musculature. To complement accurate muscle surgery of the lip and soft palate, the characteristics and functions of the mucoperiosteum that covers the palate must be respected. The quality of subsequent facial growth can be monit
