Caves are unique among ecosystem types because of their physical structures and biological functions. Embedded in rocks, the geological setting defines the boundaries of caves and dictates how energy and matter move through them. General features of caves, compared to surface ecosystems, include absence of light, relatively stable temperature and humidity, and oligotrophic conditions. Despite these conditions, caves are highly diverse ecosystems whose environmental properties are shaped by geological, hydrological, and climatic factors. Cave microbiomes metabolize atmospheric trace gases, such

Despite intensive malaria control efforts, the lowlands of western Kenya continue to experience high malaria transmission. Spatial and temporal variations in climatic factors, interventions, parasite dispersal, and human travel, influence malaria incidence in moderate-to-high transmission areas. Additionally, population movement facilitates the importation of parasites from endemic to non-endemic areas, sustaining infections where local transmission would otherwise be unsustainable. The aim of this work was to develop a process-based stochastic metapopulation transmission model that accounts f

In 2022, an unexpected Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) outbreak affected Australia, causing human and pig infections. Climate conditions were previously found to be risk factors of JEV outbreaks. Hence, understanding their future risk due to climate change can help inform public health authorities of the potential JEV risk, particularly in nonendemic areas such as Victoria, Australia. Following up on a previous investigation, this study aimed to identify regions in Victoria, Australia, that might present high-risk areas of JEV in future climatic scenarios. An analytical hierarchy process wit

Climate change is widely recognized as one of the most significant challenges facing our planet and human civilization. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to a warming of the Earth's climate. The relationship between climate change and cardiovascular (CV) health, mediated by air pollution and increased ambient temperatures, is complex and very heterogeneous. The main mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of CV disease at extreme temperatures involve several regulatory pathways, inc

Climate change will disrupt biological processes at every scale. Ecosystem functions and services vital to ecological resilience are set to shift, with consequences for how we manage land, natural resources, and food systems. Increasing temperatures cause morphological shifts, with concomitant implications for biomechanical performance metrics crucial to trophic interactions. Biomechanical performance, such as maximum bite force or running speed, determines the breadth of resources accessible to consumers, the outcome of interspecific interactions, and thus the structure of ecological networks

Climate warming has substantially advanced spring leaf flushing, but winter chilling and photoperiod co-determine the leaf flushing process in ways that vary among species. As a result, the interspecific differences in spring phenology (IDSP) are expected to change with climate warming, which may, in turn, induce negative or positive ecological consequences. However, the temporal change of IDSP at large spatiotemporal scales remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed long-term in-situ observations (1951-2016) of six, coexisting temperate tree species from 305 sites across Central Europe and f

Two groups of four calves were exposed to a poly-disperse aerosol of 1.3 X 10(4) to 16 X 10(4) colony forming units (CFU) of nalidixic acid resistant Pasteurella haemolytica type A1 litre-1 of air with a mass median aerodynamic diameter of 2.6 +/- 0.8 microns. One group of calves was kept at 5 degrees C, 72 per cent relative humidity (RH) and the second was subjected to an abrupt change in climate directly after aerosol exposure from 5 degrees C, 75 per cent RH to 13 degrees C, 84 per cent RH. Clearance of the organism from the respiratory tract of the calves was monitored over the subsequent

The microbial communities inhabiting food production environments are distinguished from those of other built environments in their capacity to influence food quality and safety, impacting consumer health. However, the degree to which indoor environmental conditions influence the composition of the bacterial and fungal communities throughout food production facilities remains insufficiently explored. In this study of five commercial food production facilities, we employed remote wireless sensors paired with marker-gene amplicon sequencing (bacterial 16S rRNA genes and fungal internal transcrib

Among the most damaging anticipated consequences of climate change are rising global temperatures that are expected to exceed the heat tolerance of many species worldwide. Species' heat tolerance reflects adaptation to their historical environments, and rapid increases in ambient temperatures create a mismatch between evolved thermal tolerance and present-day heat exposures. This mismatch has severe implications because high temperatures can disrupt physiological processes across levels of biological organization. The immune system, specifically, may be particularly susceptible to dysregulatio

Previous projections from Earth system models have suggested that rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations would stimulate global vegetation production through the CO2 fertilization effect. Here we show that increased atmospheric dryness driven by climate warming will substantially counteract this effect. Using measurements from global eddy-covariance sites and a process-based model, we project that global vegetation gross primary production (GPP) will peak around the middle of the twenty-first century and subsequently decline. The peak of global GPP is projected to increase by only 5.4 ± 0.5% co

Extant research has demonstrated the positive roles of workplace friendships and has recently found the negative effect or the double-edged effect on employees and organizations. Unfortunately, little is known about the boundary condition of the double-edged effects of workplace friendships and the elaborated understanding of the mechanism of positive and negative effects of workplace friendship simultaneously. Our purpose is to reveal that workplace friendship is a mixed blessing by investigating when and how workplace friendships are likely to promote versus inhibit voice behavior. We propos

Healthcare systems play a dual role: they protect population health but also contribute to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions, resource use, and waste, while climate change is simultaneously increasing pressure on healthcare services through extreme weather events and rising disease burdens. In Italy, efforts to improve environmental sustainability and resilience in healthcare are growing but remain fragmented, with no comprehensive national framework. This paper presents a roadmap to support the commitment to a more sustainable and climate-resilient healthcare system, developed t

OBJECTIVES: Meningococcal meningitis is a major public health problem in Africa. This report explores the potential for climate/environmental models to predict the probability of occurrence of meningitis epidemics.
METHODS: Time series of meningitis cases by month and district were obtained for Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and Togo (536 district-years). Environmental information (1989-1999) for the continent [soil and land-cover type, aerosol index, vegetation greenness (NDVI), cold cloud duration (CCD) and rainfall] was used to develop models to predict the incidence of meningitis. Meningitis i

UNLABELLED: In lakes, fungi play pivotal roles in biogeochemical processes, particularly in the decomposition of organic matter. However, these organisms have been underrepresented and taxonomically unresolved in previous research. In this study, we employ high-resolution sequencing to delve into the fungal diversity within two distinct Scandinavian Lake data sets spanning a vast latitudinal gradient across Norway and Sweden, diverse climatic zones ranging from nemoral to arctic, and a wide spectrum of nutrient conditions. Utilizing eukaryotic 18S primers, we reveal that fungi contribute, on a

The review discusses how plants modulate photosynthesis under contrasting water regimes, highlighting stress-specific limitations, recovery dynamics, and physiological indicators to inform breeding and management under climate change. Climate change is intensifying rainfall extremes, including prolonged droughts, sudden rewatering, and extended flooding, threatening crop productivity worldwide. Here, we present an integrative review synthesizing how major crops modulate photosynthesis under these contrasting water regimes. Drought restricts stomatal and mesophyll conductance, downregulates RuB

When considering the future of agriculture, one envisions the effects of climate crisis placing unprecedented pressure on our food systems. Temperature fluctuations are expected to reach extremes; droughts, floods and severe weather events occurring more often. Overall, environmental signals will become less predictable, less reliable. Plants have highly accurate environmental sensing and signalling mechanisms, allowing them to predict, adjust, and acclimate to diverse environmental cues. In crops, these systems will be key to adjusting to the conditions imposed by the climate crisis. Of these

Rapid land-use change is compressing the space between people and wildlife at an unprecedented pace, elevating concerns of conflict between people and keystone megafauna such as the African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana). However, the underlying drivers of human-elephant conflict (HEC) are often inferred but not causally identified, and forecasting under future scenarios is limited, restricting our ability to anticipate where and why conflict will intensify. Using a dataset on conflict events from 2004 to 2020 across a transboundary landscape in Southern Africa, we integrate causal infe

The built heritage -encompassing monuments, historic buildings and sculptural ensembles- is increasingly threatened by the synergistic impacts of climate change, atmospheric pollution and biological activity. This review critically analyses current understanding of the mechanisms driving the biodeterioration of built heritage, focusing on calcareous materials (e.g., limestone, marble and lime-based mortars), which are both widespread in built heritage and highly susceptible to degradation. We examine how environmental drivers -such as elevated humidity, temperature fluctuations, and pollutant

The vulnerability of coastal regions to climate change is a growing global concern, particularly in Bangladesh, which is vulnerable to flooding and storm surges due to its low-lying coastal areas. In this study, we used the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) method to assess the physical and social vulnerability of the entire coastal areas of Bangladesh, using 10 critical factors to evaluate the coastal vulnerability model (CVM). Our analysis indicates that a significant portion of the coastal regions of Bangladesh is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. We found that one-third

BACKGROUND: Climate change allows Aedes aegypti to infest new areas. Consequently, it enables the arboviruses the mosquito transmits -- e.g., dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever - to emerge in previously uninfected areas. An example is the Portuguese island of Madeira during 2012-13.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to understand how climate change will affect the future spread of this potent vector, as an aid in assessing the risk of disease outbreaks and effectively allocating resources for vector control.
METHODS: We used an empirically-informed, process-based mathematical model to study the feas
