A cluster analysis of not-in-treatment drug users at risk for HIV infection.

The purpose of the analysis described here was to classify not-in-treatment drug users participating in the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-sponsored Cooperative Agreement study into several "homogeneous" HIV risk groups using cluster analysis. Data for this analysis (N=17,778) were collected at 19 study sites in the United States and Puerto Rico. Measures selected for the cluster analysis were limited to (a) current drug use and HIV risk behaviors, (b) mutually exclusive behaviors, (c) behaviors directly related to HIV risk, and (d) behaviors that were not statistically rare. Eight ho…

An exploratory analysis of the use of cognitive, adaptive and behavioural indices for cluster analysis of ASD subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes symptoms that vary in severity and frequency between children. Consequently, multiple psychometric assessment procedures are recommended to detect an ASD, including scales which asses the presence and nature of ASD-related behaviour. However, to date, few studies have examined the relative and specific contribution which such behaviourally oriented scales can make to the diagnosis of individual children with ASD. METHOD: Cluster analysis was used to explore the common characteristics of a group of 53 preschool and elementary school children …

Cluster Analysis of a Database of Surgically Managed Adult Spine Deformity (ASD) Patients: Determining the Minimal Clinically Important Difference for Each Cluster, Comparing Two Clustering Approaches.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether two clustering approaches applied to the same database would lead to differences in the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for health-related quality of life parameters (HRQoL). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Machine learning approaches are being increasingly employed for the analysis of complex and heterogeneous settings such as that of adult spine deformity (ASD). However, it is not yet clear whether and how the choice of number and type of variables impacts the outcomes of a st

Comparative analysis of duck Tembusu virus Cluster 1 and Cluster 2.1 in Culex tritaeniorhynchus: Insights into viral characteristics, infectivity, and innate immune response.

The disease caused by the duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) is one of the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral diseases in poultry. DTMUV is classified into three distinct clusters based on significant genetic divergence: Cluster 1, Cluster 2 (subdivided into 2.1 and 2.2), and Cluster 3. The virulence of DTMUV in ducks is potentially associated with the virus genotype. The evaluation of different clusters of DTMUV is based predominantly on the characterization of infected duck hosts, and limited attention has been paid to understanding viral virulence toward the infected mosquito vectors. In this stu

Application of network analysis and cluster analysis for better prevention and control of swine diseases in Argentina.

RATIONALE/BACKGROUND: Though much smaller than the bovine industry, the porcine sector in Argentina involves a large number of farms and represents a significant economic sector. In recent years Argentina has implemented a national registry of swine movements amongst other measures, in an effort to control and eventually eradicate endemic Aujesky's disease. Such information can prove valuable in assessing the risk of transmission between farms for endemic diseases but also for other diseases at risk of emergence. METHODS: Shipment data from 2011 to 2016 were analyzed in an effort to define st

Analysis of the audiogram shape in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss using a cluster analysis.

We performed a cluster analysis to classify the audiogram shape in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). We also investigated whether the audiogram shape is a prognostic indicator in the management of ISSNHL. A total of 115 inpatients with ISSNHL treated between 2001 and 2010 were analyzed. The data collected included age, sex, duration of hearing loss at the time of treatment, and the presence or absence of tinnitus, vertigo, diabetes, nystagmus, and canal paresis. A hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using the hearing threshold for each frequency on au…

Analysis of intracranial relations in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate using cluster and factor analysis.

The present investigation was based on the cephalometric analysis of lateral teleroentgenographic pictures of 48 ten-year-old boys with complete unilateral clefts of the lip and palate. Using cluster and factor analysis, the author investigated the relationships among 75 craniofacial size, shape and position characteristics. Both multivariation methods proved useful in the search for associations between partial cranial structures. They supplemented each other well, and their combined use contributed to the definition of the following basic and specific principles of craniofacial relations and

Identifying optimal dose head CT acquisition techniques through cluster analysis from 904,209 scans.

OBJECTIVES: To identify clinically established and frequently utilized routine head computed tomography (CT) acquisition techniques in children and adults that achieve lower radiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The level of the analysis is at the CT scan (series) level. CT acquisition parameters were analyzed from a large, international CT dose registry. Scans were analyzed separately in adults and children, and by approach (helical or axial), resulting in four strata. K-means clustering, an unsupervised machine learning approach, assigned the scans into clusters based on the following acquisiti

A novel approach to quantifying mammal locomotor repertoires using scoring and cluster analysis.

Describing behaviour using qualitative categories is a staple of studies on tetrapod functional morphology, ecology and evolution. However, such categorization has several issues, primarily subjectivity and the loss of important behavioural repertoire information. Here, we propose a novel method for quantifying behaviour, using mammal locomotion as a case study to demonstrate its utility and efficacy. Species are scored from 0 to 4 on their proficiency in five locomotor modes (swimming, climbing, digging, running and aerial movement), then Ward's hierarchical clustering is used on the resultin
