Developing and Testing a Web-Based Provider Training for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy of Insomnia.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic insomnia is a common and debilitating disease that increases risk for significant morbidity and workplace difficulties. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment, but there is a critical lack of behavioral health providers trained in CBT-I because, in part, of a bottleneck in training availability and costs. The current project developed and evaluated a web-based provider training course for CBT-I: CBTIweb.org. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subject matter experts developed the content for CBTIweb.org. Then, trainees completed alpha testing (n

Impact of Ramadan intermittent fasting on cognitive function in trained cyclists: a pilot study.

This study assessed selected measures of cognitive function in trained cyclists who observed daylight fasting during Ramadan. Eleven cyclists volunteered to participate (age: 21.6±4.8 years, VO2max: 57.7±5.6 ml kg(-1)·min(-1)) and were followed for 2 months. Cognitive function (Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), Reaction Time index (RTI) and Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVP) tests) and sleep architecture (ambulatory EEG) were assessed: before Ramadan (BR), in the 1st week (RA1) and 4th week of Ramadan (RA4), and 2 weeks post-Ramadan (PR). Both cognitive tests

Efficacy of a multimodal cognitive rehabilitation including psychomotor and endurance training in Parkinson's disease.

Mild cognitive impairment, especially executive dysfunction might occur early in the course of Parkinson's disease. Cognitive training is thought to improve cognitive performance. However, transfer of improvements achieved in paper and pencil tests into daily life has been difficult. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether a multimodal cognitive rehabilitation programme including physical exercises might be more successful than cognitive training programmes without motor training. 240 PD-patients were included in the study and randomly allocated to three treatment arms, group A…

An evaluation of cognitive-behavioral therapy for training resistance to visually-induced motion sickness.

This investigation examined the techniques for reducing visually-induced motion sickness. On the basis of their responses to a motion sickness history questionnaire, 32 subjects were selected and assigned to 1 of 4 groups such that the groups were matched on the basis of their ability to tolerate visually-induced apparent motion (VM). One group received 10 sessions of desensitization training only (DT); a second group received 10 sessions of cognitive therapy only (CT); a third group received 10 sessions of combined desensitization and cognitive therapy treatment (CG); and a fourth group recei

Effects of Exergame Balance Training with Variable Cognitive Motor Challenges on Serum BDNF, p-tau181, and Cognitive Functions in Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Randomized Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-motor exergame balance training may increase attentional demands and neuronal processing, potentially affecting serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), Aβ1-42, and p-tau181, as well as train cognitive abilities in adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study aimed to compare the effects of exergame balance training of mild, moderate, high-difficulty, and Wii Fit™ groups on blood serum levels of BDNF, Aβ1-42, p-tau181, and cognition function in adults with MCI. METHODS: In this four-arm, parallel group randomized clinical trial, 97 adults wi

Inhaler mastery and retention after stepwise training in cognitively impaired older COPD.

BACKGROUND: In older COPD patients with cognitive impairment, inhaler technique errors are common, but may be reduced by simplified designs and structured training. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, crossover study with follow-up at 5±1 weeks in device-naïve COPD patients aged ≥70 years with moderate cognitive impairment (Mini Mental State Examination score 10-24). Physical function was assessed (Fried's Frailty Phenotype and Barthel Index). Participants demonstrated technique with a multidose dry powder inhaler (mDPI), a capsule-based DPI (cDPI), and a pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pM

Enhancing Local Cognition of CLIP for Training-Free Open Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation.

CLIP, as a vision-language model, has significantly advanced Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation (OVSS) with its zero-shot generalization. Despite its success, its application to OVSS is limited due to its initial image-level alignment training, which affects its performance in tasks requiring detailed local context. Our study delves into the impact of CLIP's [CLS] token on patch feature correlations, revealing a dominance of the "global patch" that hinders local feature discrimination and demonstrating the reasons, trends and impacts of its occurrence. To overcome this, we propose CLIPtrase

The arts as engines of social tinkering: Variation generation, safe experimentation, and cognitive training.

Chater & Christiansen's social tinkering thesis compellingly explains how cultural complexity emerges from local innovations. However, it underspecifies the role of the arts, treating them as outputs rather than inputs to tinkering. We argue the arts serve three crucial, underappreciated functions: generating variation for recombination, providing consequence-free experimentation spaces, and building the cognitive and social skills that enable sophisticated tinkering.

The impact of sensorimotor with cognitive engagement training on reading and eye movement in developmental dyslexia.

Dyslexia is associated with difficulty in mastering reading and writing, but also with poor performance in several motor tasks. Therefore, this study examined the effects of an intervention program involving sensorimotor and cognitive engagement on the reading performance and eye movements of children with dyslexia. Eleven dyslexic children (10.7 ± 1.7 years old) read texts displayed in an iPad, wearing an eye-tracking system. Total reading time, fixation, and saccades were obtained during reading. The children also performed manual coordination (9-hole peg) and agility (squared test) tests. A

Effects of Exercise Training on Cognitive Function in Individuals With Heart Failure: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive function is critical for disease self-management; however, it is poorer in individuals with heart failure (HF) than in age-matched people who are healthy. Aging and disease progression collectively threaten the cognitive function of individuals with HF. Exercise has been shown to improve the mobility and mortality risk factors of this population, but the effects of exercise on the cognitive function of individuals with HF are unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to examine these potential effects. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, CINA

Effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy and social skills training in management of conduct disorder.

BACKGROUND: Conduct Disorder (CD) is a repetitive disruptive behaviour that violates the rights of others, manifests in rules violation, aggression, hostility, and deceitfulness and has assumed prominence in its association with juvenile offending and criminality in adulthood. Despite this knowledge, little research attention is given to ascertaining effective psychobehavioural interventions to manage this problem, especially amongst Nigerian adolescents. AIM: This study examined the efficacy of two psychobehavioural strategies to manage CD amongst in-school adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria. S

Social cognition and interaction training for recent-onset schizophrenia: A preliminary randomized trial.

Comprehensive social cognition training programs have been effective to improve social cognition in people with chronic schizophrenia, although there is insufficient quality evidence for recent-onset psychosis. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT) in a sample of recent-onset schizophrenia outpatients. Sixteen participants who had their first psychotic episode for less than 2 years were randomly allocated to the SCIT group during 20 weeks (weekly sessions) or to a psychoeducation group and completed baseline and post-training assess

Health literacy, sociodemographic factors, and cognitive training in the active study of older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Health literacy is critical for understanding information from health-care providers and correct use of medications and includes the capacity to filter other information in navigating health care systems. Older adults with low health literacy exhibit more chronic health conditions, worse physical functioning, and poorer mental health. This study examined the relationship between sociodemographic variables and health literacy, and the impact of cognitive training on change in health literacy over 10 years in older adults. METHODS: Participants (N = 2,802) aged 65 years and older com…

A Social Virtual Reality-Based Application for the Physical and Cognitive Training of the Elderly at Home.

Frailty is a clinical condition affecting the elderly population which results in an increased risk of falls. Previous studies demonstrated that falls prevention programs are effective, but they suffer from low adherence, especially when subjects have to train unsupervised in their homes. To try to improve treatment adherence, virtual reality and social media have been proposed as promising strategies for the increase of users' motivation and thus their willingness to practice. In the context of smart homes, this work presents SocialBike, a virtual reality-based application aimed at improving

Cognitive Training at a Young Age Attenuates Deficits in the zQ175 Mouse Model of HD.

Huntington's Disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms. In these experiments, we tested if operant training at an early age affected adult cognitive deficits in the zQ175 KI Het (zQ175) mouse model of HD. In Experiment 1 we trained zQ175 mice in a fixed-ratio/progressive ratio (FR/PR) task to assay learning and motivational deficits. We found pronounced deficits in response rates and task engagement in naïve adult zQ175 mice (32-33 weeks age), while deficits in zQ175 mice trained from 6-7 weeks age were either absent or less
