[Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome induced by a cough and cold drug containing pseudoephedrine].

INTRODUCTION: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a clinico-radiological entity characterized by neurologic symptoms in association with usually reversible bilateral posterior hemispheric oedema on neuroimaging. Many pathological conditions and treatments have been associated with this syndrome. CASE REPORT: We report a 19-year-old woman, followed-up for hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis, who presented with a posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome induced by the intake of an over-the-counter cold remedy containing pseudoephedrine. Clinical manifestations and radiologi

When the disease i … Mutations in the same gene are responsible for two disorders, both appearing in childhood: familial cold urticaria syndrome (FCUS) and chronic infantile neurocutaneous articular syndrome (CINC). The pathogenesis of familial Mediterranean fever is still unclear. Pyrin/marenostrin, the protein produced by the MEFV gene, appears to hae a physiological antiinflammat …

Mastocytosis and allergic diseases.

Mastocytosis is a clonal disorder characterized by proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in various tissues, mainly skin and bone marrow. It can cause a wide variety of clinical manifestations-other than urticaria pigmentosa-that can lead to inappropriate release of mediators by mast cells. The most severe manifestation is anaphylaxis. The triggers of anaphylaxis in adults with mastocytosis are numerous, but Hymenoptera stings seem to be the most frequent, followed by foods and drugs. Therefore, to prevent severe reactions, it is very important to recognize and avoid potential triggers;

Basophil FcepsilonRI histamine release parallels expression of Src-homology 2-containing inositol phosphatases in chronic idiopathic urticaria.

METHODS: Blood basophils were isolated from cold urticaria, CIU, or normal donors, and FcepsilonRI-dependent and independent HR were quantified. Protein levels of SHIP-1, SHIP-2, spleen tyrosine kinase, and phosphorylated Akt were determined by Western blotting. Subjects' serum was tested for serum histamin …

[THE CASE REPORT OF A 8 YEARS OLD BOY WITH COCHINEAL ALLERGY].

BACKGROUND: Cochineal dyes are used as additives in various foods for the purpose of red coloration. On the other hand, although it has been reported as a causative agent of immediate allergy, most of them are adult women. We report a case of an 8-year-old boy who developed a cochineal allergy.Current disease history: He has been suffering from atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma, and food allergies since childhood. At the age of seven, he experienced an unknown anaphylaxis reaction twice. When he was 8 years old, he ate a frankfurter containing hypoallergenic cochineal for the first time; col

The relevance of low skin temperature inhibiting histamine-induced itch to the location of contact urticarial symptoms in the fish processing industry.

We have studied the influence of cold exposure on itch, erythema and wheal, in response to histamine scratch tests, in 14 volunteers. Cooling of the skin to less than 20 degrees C, by application of an ice cube for 30 min on the inside of the forearm, abolished itch and reduced erythema by approximately 50%, whereas the size of the wheal was unaffected by cooling. The observations bear significance for an explanation of the well-known observation that cold relieves itch. A normal itch response seems to require a continuous metabolic process in the skin, which is inhibited at temperatures less

The evaluation of patients with urticaria.

Not only is urticaria a condition of disparate cause, but it also may be produced through the action of one or more of a long list of chemical mediators. This article discusses some of the accepted procedures in the evaluation of patients with urticaria, which includes not only categorization but also a search for the sources of aggravation and laboratory testing to confirm the clinical diagnosis. An example of a printed history form is included, which comprises questions that hopefully will help to identify aggravating factors as well as potential causes.

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from lichens in present-day Finland.

Lichens are abundant in forests, living on trees, soil, stones and rocks. They contain usnic acid and other lichen acids that are contact allergens. Lichens and liverworts cause woodcutter's dermatitis, eczema that appears in the forest on the bare skin areas, especially in cold and wet weather. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from lichens occurs in forestry and horticultural workers and in lichen pickers. Lichens can cause immediate allergy, contact urticaria, rhinitis and asthma and probably also photoallergic contact dermatitis. Lichens are used for the manufacture of oak moss abso

Autoreactive IgE in Chronic Spontaneous/Idiopathic Urticaria and Basophil/Mastocyte Priming Phenomenon, as a Feature of Autoimmune Nature of the Syndrome.

Recent years of research have shed a new light on the role of IgE in immune reactions. It seems to be more than just a contribution to immediate type of allergic response. It appears that monomeric IgE may enhance mast cell activity without cross-linking of FcεRI by IgE specific allergen or autoreactive IgG anti-IgE antibodies. Monomeric IgE molecules are heterogeneous concerning their ability to induce survival and activation of mast cells only by binding the IgE to FcεRI, but not affecting degranulation of cells. It also turned out that IgE may react to autoantigens occurring in the blood no

The modulation of cutaneous inflammatory reactions by peptide-containing sensory nerves.

In the present experiments the role of unmyelinated sensory fibres in the mechanism of cutaneous inflammatory reactions under normal and pathological conditions has been studied in man and animals. Dye leakage responses to histamine, serotonin, compound 48/80, bradykinin and substance P were significantly reduced, while neurogenic inflammation was completely abolished in rats treated neonatally with capsaicin, as studied quantitatively by the Evans blue technique. Neurogenic inflammation could also be elicited by mustard oil in normally innervated human skin, but not in skin areas affected by

The NLRP3 inflammasome: a new player in neurological diseases.

Inflammasomes are supramolecular protein complexes implicated in the detection of pathogens or danger-associated molecules and are responsible for mounting the first line of innate immune response to counteract these signals and restore tissue homeostasis. Among different inflammasomes identified so far, NLRP3 is of main interest since mutations in Nlrp3 gene are associated with autoinflammatory diseases such as Muckle-Wells syndrome, neonatal onset multisystem inflammatory disease, and familial cold urticaria/autoinflammatory syndrome. On the other hand, whereas other inflammasomes are mainly…

[Painful nodular and plantar erythema in children].

INTRODUCTION: According to our knowledge, only twenty-three similar cases have been reported in the literature. Possible hypotheses for localised painful red nodules on the feet in children include erythema nodosum, neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis, traumatic plantar urticaria, vasculitis and cold panniculitis. CASE REPORT: We report a typical case of painful erythematous plantar nodules of the child. A 13-yr-old boy was first seen by a paediatrician for intermittent fever. The fever was associated with red, painful nodules on the soles. He was unable to walk. Routine blood chemistry paramet

[Intolerance reactions of the skin].

Intolerance reactions of the skin in which a decision is made on allergic and toxic genesis have increased in significance in recent years. Whereas antibodies blocking bacterial or viral antigens are formed in the normergic immune reaction, nonblocking antibodies to animal, plant or chemical heterologous substances are formed in an allergy as a result of an misdirected immunological reaction. Sensitization is favored by a) large structure and protein affinity of the allergen, b) irritation of the affected part of the skin by fungi or chemicals and c) genetic predisposition. Depending on the cl
