Fast track open ileo-colic resections for Crohn's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction of multimodal rehabilitation programmes after open colonic surgery for noninflammatory bowel disease has reduced hospital stay to about 2-3 days, but no data are available from open ileo-colic surgery for Crohn's disease with multimodal rehabilitation regimens. Therefore, the aim of study was to assess outcome after ileo-colic resections for Crohn's disease with multimodal rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two consecutive ileo-colic resections for Crohn's disease in 29 patients received epidural analgesia and enforced postoperative oral nutrition and mobili

[Hereditary nonpolyposis colonic carcinoma with primary extra-colic manifestation].

A 62-year-old woman presented with nausea, weakness, and vasovagal attack. She had a history of a carcinoma of the endometrium 19 years prior to admission, and adenocarcinomas of the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, rectum and sigmoid during the subsequent years. Due to the typical history, including family history, hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) was diagnosed 6 months prior to admission. Physical examination was normal with the exception of pallor of the skin and the palpebral conjunctivas. Laboratory values showed hypochromic, microcytic anemia (hemoglobin: 6.5 g/

[Acute intestinal hemorrhage in a pancreatic pseudocyst-colic fistula].

Chronic pancreatitis with a pseudocyst may cause acute massive intestinal bleeding due to simultaneous erosion of the splenic artery and transverse colon. This is a potentially lethal complication, which requires instant diagnosis and treatment. The pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this condition are illustrated by two patients. Exact localisation of the source of bleeding is achieved by selective angiography of the visceral arteries. In shocked and inoperable patients, selective embolisation of the bleeding artery is the treatment of choice.

Surgical treatment of sand colic. Results in 40 horses.

A retrospective study of 40 horses that underwent surgical treatment for sand colic was performed. Three horses were euthanatized and one died during surgery. Of the 36 horses that recovered from anesthesia, five died before discharge from the hospital and seven died after discharge. Twenty-four horses survived at least 12 months. Sand impaction of the right dorsal colon was present in 26 horses. In addition to sand impaction, 10 horses also had colonic displacement or volvulus.

Evaluating distribution of the left branch of the middle colic artery and the left colic artery by CT angiography and colonography to classify blood supply to the splenic flexure.

INTRODUCTION: CT angiography has gained widespread acceptance for preoperative evaluation of blood supply in patients with colorectal cancer. However, there have been few reports that pertain to the splenic flexure, for which surgery is technically difficult. We used preoperative CT angiography and CT colonography to evaluate blood supply to the splenic flexure. METHODS: We defined the splenic flexure as the junction of the distal third of the transverse colon and the proximal third of the descending colon. We reviewed 191 cases and considered the descending colon as divided into the proximal

Use of Intraperitoneal Lidocaine in Horses Undergoing Laparotomy for Colic.

Perioperative lidocaine is widely used in horses with acute abdomen for its analgesic, prokinetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-endotoxic effects, although evidence of its visceral analgesic efficacy remains inconclusive. Given the potential of alternative routes of administration for local anaesthetics, this prospective, randomised, unblinded clinical trial evaluated whether intraperitoneal (IP) lidocaine improves early postoperative recovery, including recovery from anaesthesia and the first 24 h after laparotomy for colic. A Multifactorial Numerical Rating Composite Pain Scale for equines wa

A synbiotic mixture for the management of infantile colic: A randomized trial.

UNLABELLED: Infant colic is defined as a recurrent and prolonged period of fussing, crying and/or irritability that cannot be prevented or resolved by caregivers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a synbiotic (Bactecal D Liquid) in infants consulting a primary health care professional for inconsolable crying. A randomized trial was conducted in 68 infants diagnosed by the consulted primary health care professional as "probably suffering from infant colic". Patients were randomized into two groups and given the synbiotic once (group 1) or twice (group 2) a day for 28 days. Qu

Updates on Diagnosis and Management of Colic in the Field and Criteria for Referral.

Gastrointestinal colic is the most common primary care equine emergency and affects nearly one of four horses per year. Colic is a significant welfare concern for equine patients and a financial and emotional burden for owners. The primary care practitioner is instrumental in identifying critical cases quickly and making appropriate management recommendations to improve patient outcomes.

Changes in the gut microbiome and colic in horses: Are they causes or consequences?

The gut microbiome is a compound for millions of microorganisms that coexist in an organized way and contribute to the fermentation of different types of indigestible fibers by the small intestine. Some techniques, such as the massive sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene, have made it possible to obtain information about the abundance and functionality of the microorganisms that compose the equine gut microbiome and the interaction with their environment. Recent studies have identified the change in the composition of the intestinal microbiome during and after a colic episode, although is

Enabling national improvement in quality of care for renal colic.

OBJECTIVES: To report the results of a clinical audit conducted by the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) of ureteric stone care pathways, with results reported with reference to national quality standards. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The BAUS conducted a clinical audit of all patients presenting as an emergency to 107 hospitals in England during November 2020 with ureteric stones. All patients were followed up until 31 March 2021 and the inpatient and outpatient management received was recorded. RESULTS: Data for 2192 patients across 117 units were submitted. Infantile Colic and the Subsequent Development of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Little is known about the association between infantile colic and the later onset of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: This study examined all 917 707 children who were born in Korea between 2007 and 2008. Infantile colic was defined with 1 or more diagnoses of ICD-10 code R10.4 or R68.1 at the age of 5 weeks to 4 months, and infants with a diagnosis of infantile colic and without were allocated into the infantile colic group and the control group. IBS was defined as 2 or more diagnoses of ICD-10 code K58.X after 4 years of age. Each child was traced until 2017. The ri

Definition and characterization of the descending branch of the left colic artery.

PURPOSE: The descending branch of the left colic artery (dLCA) is under-recognized and has not been clearly defined. The dLCA is often confused with the sigmoid artery (SA) originating from the left colic artery (LCA). We clarified the anatomical characteristics of the dLCA and searched for surrogate measures to identify it. METHODS: Arterial phase, venous phase, and three-dimensional images of abdominal arteries were created in 411 patients using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). We analyzed the branching patterns of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) based on CT. The dLCA was de

Laparoscopic Repair of Bochdalek Hernia, Presenting as a Renal Colic.

Bochdalek hernia (BH) is a posterolateral diaphragmatic congenital defect. Although most commonly diagnosed at birth, 0.17%-6% of cases can also be seen in adults. A third of the cases may contain abdominal organs like small bowel, kidney, or spleen. In our literature search, we only found 3 reported cases of urinary obstruction secondary to herniation of the renal pelvis through a BH. Here we describe a rare case of upper urinary tract obstruction caused by a BH successfully treated by laparoscopic surgery in our center.

Correlation of Biliary Colic in the Absence of Cholelithiasis with Pancreaticobiliary Obstruction.

A small fraction of patients undergoing cholecystectomy for biliary colic are subsequently diagnosed with an obstructive pancreatic head mass. We review our experience with such patients to provide insight into improving evaluation before cholecystectomy. Retrospective chart review of patients undergoing cholecystectomy from 2004 to 2015 identified six patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for biliary colic before being diagnosed with a pancreatic head neoplasm within six months after cholecystectomy. Charts were analyzed for presenting symptoms, evaluation before and after chole

Is Hydronephrosis on Ultrasound Predictive of Ureterolithiasis in Patients with Renal Colic?

PURPOSE: Renal ultrasound accurately identifies hydronephrosis but it is less sensitive than computerized tomography for the detection of ureterolithiasis. We investigated whether the presence of hydronephrosis on ultrasound was associated with a ureteral stone in patients who underwent both ultrasound and computerized tomography during the evaluation of acute renal colic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients from 3 institutions who were evaluated for acute renal colic by both ultrasound and computerized tomography between 2012 and 2015. Patients were inc
