The relative sensitivity of normal human peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) granulocytic-macrophagic and eosinophilic committed stem cells (CFC) to a source of colony stimulating factor (CSF) was evaluated. In this study, PB and BM cells depleted of mature granulocytes, monocytes (Mo), thymus dependent lymphocytes (T cells), and, in some studies, bone marrow derived lymphocytes (B cells) were cultured in soft agar medium. Human placental conditioned medium (HPCM) was used as a source of CSF. The time sequence evaluation of cultures of PB and BM cells in the presence of a constant amoun

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are important pollinators of plants, including those that produce nut, fruit, and vegetable crops. Therefore, high annual losses of managed honey bee colonies in the United States and many other countries threaten global agriculture. Honey bee colony deaths have been associated with multiple abiotic and biotic factors, including pathogens, but the impact of virus infections on honey bee colony population size and survival are not well understood. To further investigate seasonal patterns of pathogen presence and abundance and the impact of viruses on honey bee colony

The development of macrophage populations in osteopetrosis (op) mutant mice defective in production of functional macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and the response of these cell populations to exogenous M-CSF were used to classify macrophages into four groups: 1) monocytes, monocyte-derived macrophages, and osteoclasts, 2) MOMA-1-positive macrophages, 3) ER-TR9-positive macrophages, and 4) immature tissue macrophages. Monocytes, monocyte-derived macrophages, osteoclasts in bone, microglia in brain, synovial A cells, and MOMA-1- or ER-TR9-positive macrophages were deficient in op/op

ObjectiveThis paper considers early colonial Australian incarceration as a diffuse carceral system encompassing gaols, private dwellings and sites of labour rather than discrete institutional forms. Drawing on existing records and historiography, this paper examines the nature of incarceration practices in early colonial Australia prior to the advent of the asylum.ConclusionsConfinement operated across multiple sites, including gaols, assigned labour settings and private households, where authority was exercised through overlapping legal, medical and domestic arrangements. These were not discr

While automation has transformed many areas inside clinical laboratories, microbiology still relies heavily on manual tasks, particularly the culture of samples on agar plates and their subsequent manual review for microorganism identification and antibiotic susceptibility profiling. Bacterial colony detection and classification require trained professionals, making the process time-consuming and prone to human error. Developing deep learning models to automate these tasks could improve microbiology workflows and accelerate clinical decision-making. In this study we trained and evaluated five

BACKGROUND: This article develops a Luhmannian historical-sociological approach to functional differentiation by examining colonial labor governance in German South West Africa after the Herero and Nama War. It asks how the possibility of physical coercion was reconnected to everyday governance through labor regulation, police supervision, and vocabularies of protection and proper treatment.
METHODS: The article uses a historical-sociological and conceptual method. It reconstructs Luhmann's theory of power, functional differentiation, and the potentialization of violence, and relates this the

This paper explores the emergence of Quebrar, a community-led drug recovery program, as a dynamic and evolving alternative infrastructure wi … ation raises questions about how alternative infrastructures can evolve in response to histories of colonialism and what they offer for future reimaginings of care and justice. Finally, it considers how these themes intersect with the practice of research itself, asking how embodied knowledge can be incorporated into the research process.

Examination of bacteria/host cell interactions is important for understanding the aetiology of many infectious diseases. The colony forming unit (CFU) has been the standard for quantifying bacterial burden for the past century, however, this suffers from low sensitivity and is dependent on bacterial culturability in vitro. Our data demonstrate the discrepancy between the CFU and bacterial genome copy number in an osteomyelitis-relevant co-culture system and we confirm diagnosis and quantify bacterial load in clinical bone specimens. This study provides an improved workflow for the quantificati

This paper brings together fifth-wave public health theory and a decolonised approach to the human informed by the Caribbean thinker, Sylvia Wynter, and the primary exponent of African Humanism, Es'kia Mpahlele. Sub-Saharan indigenous ways of thinking the human as co-constitutive in a subject we might call human-animal-'environment', in conjunction with the subcontinent's experiences of colonial damage in disease 'prevention' and 'treatment', demonstrate the lack of genuine engagement with Indigenous wisdom in Western medical practice. The paper offers a decolonial reading of pandemic history,

Bipolar disorder is marked by mood swings that alternate between mania and depression. The stages of bipolar disorder (BD), as one of the most common mental conditions, are often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD), resulting in ineffective treatment and a poor prognosis. As a result, distinguishing MDD from BD at an earlier phase of the disease may aid in more efficient and targeted treatments. In this research, an enhanced ACO (IACO) technique biologically inspired by and following the required ant colony optimization (ACO) was utilized to minimize the number of features by delet

This article explores attempts to control outbreaks of venereal diseases among prostitutes and imperial soldiers in Cairo and Alexandria leading up to and through World War I. Seeking to move beyond the usual colonial framing of center-periphery, it considers two British imperial outposts-Egypt and Australia-in conversation. The war brought thousands of Australian soldiers to Egypt, leaving their mark on Egypt and becoming marked by their time there, sometimes in indelible and deadly ways, as bodies and bodily fluids collided, and microbes passed between colonial and imperial subjects. The art

This article analyses the origins and formation of medical and social discourses on neurosis in colonial Korea. With the introduction of Western medicine after the Opening of Korea in 1876, neurasthenia and hysteria began to be understood as neurotic diseases, and their importance was further highlighted during the colonial period of 1910-45. The article also addresses the role of neuropsychiatry in forming discourses on neurosis. In medical communities during the colonial period, the main source of these discourses gradually shifted from internal medicine to neuropsychiatry. In particular, Ko

Adenoviruses are medium size nonenveloped viruses with a trend of coevolution with their hosts. We surveyed South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) and Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) for adenoviruses at two sites from 2009 to 2012. Despite the common pattern of host specificity, some of the adenoviruses in our study were present in samples from unexpected host species. We identified mastadenoviruses, aviadenoviruses, and siadenoviruses in A. australis from Peru and Chile and in S. humboldti from Peru. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) significantly reduces the produc

A 59 year-old woman was treated with adjuvant chemotherapy for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) stage IB. She received pegfilgrastrim as secondary prophylaxis of neutropenia. After administration of pegfilgrastrim on day 11, she was hospitalised because of carotidynia and myocarditis that improved with antibiotics and steroids as an infection was suspected. Once she was recovered, another cycle of chemotherapy with pegfilgrastrim was administrated. At this time, the patient presented to our hospital with fever, odynophagia and chest pain, with diagnosis of myocarditis coupled with cardioge

This report describes an outbreak of erysipelas in a colony of captive Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti). The only previously reported case in a related species was of an individual little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor). Five Humboldt penguins in a mixed colony displayed non-specific signs of illness, including lethargy, inappetence and regurgitation after movement for exhibit upgrading. There was no improvement after 5 days of treatment with oral enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg q24h). Four Humboldt penguins, including two that were not part of the original five displaying signs of illness, died

Rabies became one of the critical zoonoses in the modern urban environment since pet keeping culture became widespread in the Western countries in the 18th century. The sanitary policy against rabies was a forceful tool for the colonial rulers in the 19th century. This study describes the rabies outbreaks in the context of prevention methods, experts' engagement and the public response to the policies based on the statistics, regulations and newspaper articles on rabies in Korea during the Japanese colonial period. Based on the changes in the rabies policies, this study divides the time period

The small-colony variant (SCV) phenotype of Staphylococcus aureus is associated with intracellular persistence and reduced antimicrobial susceptibility, which can lead to therapeutic failure. Since SCVs grow slowly and have a confusing morphology, the identification of infections due to SCV is difficult. We have identified SCVs in two patients who presented with persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia complicated by surgical site infections after cardiothoracic surgery. Nine blood isolates were collected from the two patients for species identification, antimic

BACKGROUND: In Staphylococcus aureus sub-populations of slow-growing cells forming small colony variants (SCVs) are associated with persistent and recurrent infections that are difficult to eradicate with antibiotic therapies. In SCVs that are resistant towards aminoglycosides, mutations have been identified in genes encoding components of the respiratory chain. Given the high frequencies of SCVs isolated clinically it is vital to understand the conditions that promote or select for SCVs.
RESULTS: In this study we have examined how exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics with
