Coccidioidal complement fixation tests, precipitin tests, counter-immunoelectrophoresis, and immunodiffusion tests demonstrated negative findings. These results provide additional evidence that some patients with AIDS have defects in humoral as well as cellular immunity.

A patient with ocular and oral lesions, as well as cicatricial pemphigoid, had intercellular antibodies to a titer of 80 by indirect immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy staining tests with her serum. Sixty five patients with an ophthalmoscopic diagnosis of chorioretinitis who, underwent complement fixation tests and intradermoreaction using Toxoplasma antigens were studied. 95,4% of them disclosed antibody titers with the former and 58,5% reactors were found with the latter. Sixty five individuals with neither backgrounds nor clinical symptoms of toxoplasmosis were used as control, and 27,7% of reactors in both tests were likewise found. Production of precipitating and complement-fixing antibody in rabbits and other animals was induced by immunization with live yeast-phase cells of Histoplasma capsulatum. Results of studies of polysaccharide antigens from three strains of H. capsulatum, by quantitative complement-fixation with human and rabbit antisera, strongly suggest the presence of type specificity. The variations of titer during 11 weeks in one patient with histoplasmosis and the variations of titer among a group of patients with histoplasmosis were studied by use of quantitative complement-fixation tests.

A serological study was carried out in Tiaret province in western Algeria on 1032 cows distributed in 95 flocks to estimate the prevalence of Brucella infection and to compare the sensitivity and specificity of a range of agglutination tests. A rapid latex agglutination (LA) test was compared with complement fixation and enzyme immunoassay for the determination of herpes simplex virus immune status in sera of patients. Of 173 samples, 88% gave concordant results in all three assays (115 positive and 37 negative). The LA and complement fixation tests agreed 92% of the time, and the LA agreed with the enzyme immunoassay 94% of the time. LA is a simple and rapid test which can be used for determining the herpes simplex virus immune status in sera of patients.

One aspect of the current epidemic of venereal diseases is the spread of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV). Formerly confined to the lower echelons of society, it now affects more affluent classes as well. A cluster of four cases was seen in a small college town. Serial LGV complement fixation tests, the most valuable diagnostic tool, may reveal many more cases than reported previously. Early treatment is important. We recommend therapy for all persons sexually exposed to LGV who have any LGV complement fixation test anomaly, whether or not clinical signs develop.

We describe a 37-year-old farmer with a 3-week history of fevers and hepatitis, in whom Q fever was diagnosed. The diagnosis was based on the findings of characteristic "ring" granulomas on a bone marrow biopsy specimen and confirmed by complement-fixation antibody tests to Coxiella burnetii. Unusual aspects of this case included (1) relatively low complement-fixation antibody titers, (2) prolonged prothrombin time, (3) false-positive results of a serologic test for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and (4) ring granulomas that progressed to atypical granulomas in biopsy specimens.

During the period June 1967 to May 1972, viral tests were performed upon 1195 inpatients aged 12 and over in the Brompton Hospital. The overall diagnostic rate was 21-5%, comparing 9-3% by isolation and 14-9% by complement fixation (6-5% by four-fold rises in titre in paired sera, 8-4% by titres larger than or equal to 160 in single sera).
