Multi-model machine learning framework for prediction of greenhouse gas emissions during composting of organic solid waste.

Accurate prediction and regulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during composting are essential for mitigating global warming. Herein, two multi-model machine learning frameworks were developed based on Gradient Boosting Regression, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Extra Trees Regression algorithms. In particular, the modular multi-model demonstrated superior performance in predicting CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions, achieving R2 values of 0.9662, 0.9729, and 0.9051, respectively. The stacking ensemble model also exhibited high accuracy in cumulative emission prediction (R2 = 0.9278). SHapley A…

Assessment of Different Strategies for Composting of the Two-Phase Olive Mill Solid Waste: A Demonstrative Scale.

Thousands of tons of two-phase olive mill solid waste (2P-OMSW) are generated annually, necessitating effective valorization strategies. Composting has been widely explored as a management approach; however, the extended processing time required for these residues poses a significant challenge for the olive industry. In this study, a forced aeration system combined with a semipermeable cover was implemented at a demonstrative scale to enhance the composting process and reduce its duration. Additionally, process optimization was evaluated through a two-stage composting strategy. In stage I, com…

Effects of biochar-loaded microbial agent in regulating nitrogen transformation and integration into humification for straw composting.

Exogenous additives can impact organic matter transformation in composting, but their effects on nitrogen conversion and humification in straw composting require clarification. This study investigated how rice husk biochar-loaded microbial agent (RM) affects nitrogen transformation and humification during straw composting. Results showed that the addition of RM enhanced ammonia oxidation and assimilation during composting, leading to a 10.32%-22.27% increase in total nitrogen content. Furthermore, the RM treatment enriched nitrogen-converting microbes such as Longispora and Coprinopsis, enhanc…

Fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes during aerobic co-composting of food waste with sewage sludge.

Aerobic composting is widely used on transforming organic solid waste into proliferating products. However, the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the process of co-composting of food waste with sewage sludge has been rarely reported to date. Therefore, we investigated a laboratory-scale composting using food waste and sewage sludge as substrates to study changes in antibiotics and ARGs during composting. Varying dose of antibiotics were added to allow the evaluation of changes in antibiotics, the microbial community and ARGs. The results revealed that composting …

Influence of Initial C/N Ratio on Chemical and Microbial Composition during Long Term Composting of Straw.

Shredded straw of Miscanthus was composted in 800-L boxes with different amounts of pig slurry added as nitrogen source. The impact of the different initial C/N ratios (11, 35, 47, 50, and 54) on the composting process and the end product was evaluated by examining chemical and microbiological parameters during 12 months of composting. Low initial C/N ratios caused a fast degradation of fibers during the first three months of composting (hemicellulose: 50-80%, cellulose: 40-60%), while high initial C/N ratios resulted in 10-20% degradation of both hemicellulose and cellulose. These differences…

From compost to clean energy: influence of cathode potential evolution on hydrogen production in bioelectrochemical reactors.

Microbial bioelectrochemical technologies rely on the development of biofilms on electrode surfaces; therefore, a high surface area in packed anodes is advantageous for their performance. In addition, bioelectrochemical reactors (BERs) for hydrogen production require low-cost installation materials to enable large-scale implementation. In this study, a one-liter BER was constructed using 0.38 L of carbon felt as a packed bioanode, 0.65 L of compost leachate as the electrolyte, and a stainless-steel mesh cathode. The reactor was operated under an anode potential of 0.05 V vs. Ag/AgCl (KCl, 3.5

Sheep Manure as a Potential Source of Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus and Composting as a Mitigation Strategy.

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is a tobamovirus posing significant threats to tomato production worldwide because it overcomes the currently deployed genetic resistance. This study investigated a previously undocumented transmission route involving livestock, demonstrating that ToBRFV-infected tomato plant debris fed to sheep can result in the presence of viral RNA in manure and consequential infectivity demonstrated by bioassays. To mitigate this risk, we evaluated composting as an alternative crop residue management strategy. Infected plant debris was composted under controlled aer…

Detection of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus in the environment from air, plant debris, compost, and soil.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous fungus, a saprophyte of plants, and an opportunistic pathogen of humans. Azole fungicides are used in agriculture to control plant pathogens, and azoles are also used as a first line of treatment for aspergillosis. The continued exposure of A. fumigatus to azoles in the environment has likely led to azole resistance in the clinic where infections result in high levels of mortality. Pan-azole resistance in environmental isolates is most often associated with tandem-repeat (TR) mutations containing 34 or 46 nucleotides in the cyp51A gene. Because the rapid d
