EANM dosimetry committee series on standard operational procedures: a unified methodology for 99mTc-MAA pre- and 90Y peri-therapy dosimetry in liver radioembolization with 90Y microspheres.

The aim of this standard operational procedure is to standardize the methodology employed for the evaluation of pre- and post-treatment absorbed dose calculations in 90Y microsphere liver radioembolization. Basic assumptions include the permanent trapping of microspheres, the local energy deposition method for voxel dosimetry, and the patient-relative calibration method for activity quantification. The identity of 99mTc albumin macro-aggregates (MAA) and 90Y microsphere biodistribution is also assumed. The large observed discrepancies in some patients between 99mTc-MAA predictions and actual 90

Extrapolation of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis perturbations and associated toxicity in rodents to humans: case study with perchlorate.

Functional aspects of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid (HPT) axis in rats and humans are compared, exposing why extrapolation of toxicant-induced perturbations in the rat HPT axis to the human HPT axis cannot be accomplished using default risk assessment methodology. Computational tools, such as biologically based dose response models for the HPT axis, are recommended to perform complex animal to human extrapolations involving the HPT axis. Experimental and computational evidence are presented that suggest perchlorate acts directly on the thyroid gland in rats. The apparent escape from perch

[Diagnostic algorithm in cystic renal masses].

Cystic renal lesions can be classified as either simple or complicated cysts, which might occur as solitary as well as multifocal lesions. The Bosniak classification (I-IV), which characterizes renal cysts on the basis of ultrasound or computer tomographic criteria, is very useful for further decision-making about the therapeutic approach. The method of choice for diagnosis of renal cysts is ultrasound. Besides the conventional B-mode ultrasound, contrast enhanced ultrasound with SonoVue provides a promising new technique for distinguishing cysts according to the Bosniak classification. This r

Radial pulse harmonic analysis for cardiometabolic assessment: a computational and translational mini review.

PURPOSE: Radial pulse harmonic analysis has emerged as a quantitative frequency-domain approach for non-invasive assessment of cardiovascular and metabolic physiology through characterization of arterial hemodynamics. By decomposing radial pressure pulse waveforms into harmonic components, this method provides physiologically interpretable information regarding arterial compliance, wave reflection, vascular resistance, and ventricular-arterial coupling that may not be fully captured by conventional blood pressure measurements or time-domain indices. METHODS: This mini review summarizes the th

Should office workers spend fewer hours at their computer? A systematic review of the literature.

Worldwide, millions of office workers use a computer. Reports of adverse health effects due to computer use have received considerable media attention. This systematic review summarises the evidence for a relationship between the duration of work time spent using the computer and the incidence of hand-arm and neck-shoulder symptoms and disorders. Several databases were systematically searched up to 6 November 2005. Two reviewers independently selected articles that presented a risk estimate for the duration of computer use, included an outcome measure related to hand-arm or neck-shoulder sympt

Protein-Protein Interactions Analyzed by the Fragment Molecular Orbital Method.

This chapter describes the applications of the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method to analyzing the protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Employing the protein complexes related to influenza virus, measles virus, SARS-CoV-2 and HER2, the intermolecular interactions between amino acid residues are quantitatively evaluated. Recent advances in computational methodology, such as the systematic identification of interaction hotspots, the incorporation of conformational fluctuations and the clustering-based statistical averaging are addressed.

Identification of Potential Candidates with Antimicrobial Activity Against Antibiotic-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Strains: A Hierarchical Bioinformatics Approach.

Antibiotic resistance among several bacteria is a warning sign that reinforces the need for research to identify new compounds that are effective against resistant strains. In this sense, bioinformatics stands out as an excellent tool for identifying drug candidates by using computational methodologies to detect compounds with potential biological activity. Two pivot compounds (QNZ and 0Y5) with biological activity against Staphylococcus aureus were selected. A virtual screening was performed in the MolPort database with a Tanimoto index of 0.5, resulting in 20,000 compounds, 10,000 compounds

Identifying time patterns in Huntington's disease trajectories using dynamic time warping-based clustering on multi-modal data.

One of the principal goals of Precision Medicine is to stratify patients by accounting for individual variability. However, extracting meaningful information from Real-World Data, such as Electronic Health Records, still remains challenging due to methodological and computational issues. A Dynamic Time Warping-based unsupervised-clustering methodology is presented in this paper for the clustering of patient trajectories of multi-modal health data on the basis of shared temporal characteristics. Building on an earlier methodology, a new dimension of time-varying clinical and imaging features is

Computational Perspectives on Cognition in Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe eating disorder, marked by persistent changes in behaviour, cognition and neural activity that result in insufficient body weight. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using computational approaches to understand the cognitive mechanisms that underlie AN symptoms, such as persistent weight loss behaviours, rigid rules around food and preoccupation with body size. Our aim was to systematically review progress in this emerging field. Based on articles selected using systematic and reproducible criteria, we identified five current themes in the computat

Path ahead: Tackling the Challenge of Computationally Estimating Lithium Diffusion in Cathode Materials.

In the roadmap toward designing new and improved materials for Lithium ion batteries, the ability to estimate the diffusion coefficient of Li atoms in electrodes, and eventually solid-state electrolytes, is key. Nevertheless, as of today, accurate prediction through computational tools remains challenging. Its experimental measurement does not appear to be much easier. In this work, we devise a computational protocol for the determination of the Li-migration energy barrier and diffusion coefficient, focusing on a common cathode material such as LiNiO2, which represents a prototype of the widel

Three-dimensional numerical schemes for the segmentation of the psoas muscle in X-ray computed tomography images.

The analysis of the psoas muscle in morphological and functional imaging has proved to be an accurate approach to assess sarcopenia, i.e. a systemic loss of skeletal muscle mass and function that may be correlated to multifactorial etiological aspects. The inclusion of sarcopenia assessment into a radiological workflow would need the implementation of computational pipelines for image processing that guarantee segmentation reliability and a significant degree of automation. The present study utilizes three-dimensional numerical schemes for psoas segmentation in low-dose X-ray computed tomograp

Characterizing the Molecular Architecture of Hydrogels and Crosslinked Polymer Networks beyond Flory-Rehner. II: Experiments.

We previously [Borges, F. T. P. Biomacromolecules 2020, 21(12), 5104-5118] introduced a novel methodology for the characterization of the dimensions and architecture of hydrogel networks that provides more detailed information than the classical Flory-Rehner theory [Canal, T.; Peppas, N. A. J. Biomed. Mater. Res. 1989, 23, 1183-1193]. In this article, we illustrate our methodology by applying it to the phototerpolymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate (EGA), and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). The experimental design includes 120 formulation

The std2 package: A computationally efficient program to calculate molecular response properties and excited states using simplified quantum chemistry methods.

The std2 modular program package is dedicated to the computation of excited states and molecular response properties using simplified quantum chemistry approaches. The framework involves several variants of the simplified time-dependent density functional theory, including sTDA, sTD-DFT, SF-sTD-DFT, XsTDA, XsTD-DFT, and SF-XsTD-DFT methods. Combining controlled approximations with efficient implementations, the std2 program enables routine calculations on systems containing thousands of atoms while retaining a favorable balance between computational cost and predictive accuracy. Therefore, the

PGS-GS: a framework integrating polygenic scores and genomic selection in animal breeding.

Genomic prediction has become a central paradigm in biology, enabling quantitative inference of genetic contributions to complex traits across humans, animals, and plants. Although genomic research in human genetics and animal breeding shares a highly homologous methodological foundation, significant barriers persist in their analytical paradigms and application scenarios. This study aims to promote cross-disciplinary integration by introducing human-derived polygenic scores (PGS) algorithms into animal genomic selection (GS) and proposing a PGS-GS framework with a preliminary weighting-based

A systematic review of human avoidance learning: Cognition, computation, and methods.

Avoidance behaviour is fundamental for survival but can become maladaptive in clinical conditions. A large body of literature has accumulated on the dynamics of human avoidance learning. However, current theories and overviews do not provide an exhaustive account of this evidence. In this systematic review, we identify N = 116 studies on human avoidance learning. We analyse these studies with the goal of distilling robust empirical phenomena as a basis for theory-building, and examine their diagnostic value in differentiating between competing theories. We find that the evidence is difficult t

From EEG Source Localization to Brain Network Analysis: A Computational Neuroscience Perspective.

Electroencephalography (EEG) source localization has evolved from a technical solution to an inverse problem and into a fundamental framework for investigating large-scale brain networks. By reconstructing cortical activity from scalp-recorded signals, source-space EEG improves anatomical interpretability and reduces confounding effects of volume conduction compared with sensor-level analyses. These advances have enabled more reliable estimation of functional and effective connectivity, graph-theoretical characterization of brain networks, and the integration of machine learning for automated

Connecting the dots: approaching a standardized nomenclature for molecular connectivity in positron emission tomography.

Positron emission tomography (PET)-based connectivity analysis provides a molecular perspective that complements fMRI-derived functional connectivity. However, lack of standardized terminology and diverse methodologies in PET connectivity studies has resulted in inconsistencies, complicating the interpretation and comparison of results across studies. A standardized nomenclature is thus needed to reduce ambiguity, enhance reproducibility, and facilitate interpretability across radiotracers, imaging modalities and studies. Here, we define and differentiate the terms "molecular connectivity" and
